Tried the Vision Pro at a friend's place last night.

I've only used it for like 20min. But the overall impression is... meh.

The AR aspect of it was nice. But I think with Quest 3 having similar capabilities. It's hard to justify 7x the price.

Don't get me wrong. It's miles ahead of what Quest 3 quality is. But still... I just don't see the justification for it. The only cool thing is the hand/finger control. But I think it still needs some improvement.

Overall, not something I'd drop 3.5k USD for. I'd rather have a high-end spec MBP instead of the Vision Pro.

Maybe gen 2 or 3 would be the charm.

Lots of good games on the quest. Beat saber, Thrill of the fight, les mills bodycombat, Mini golf etc.

VR Mini Golf feels just like real mini golf.

The Quest 3 is a very solid entry into the VR space for those that want to give VR a go. The Vision Pro is a lot better in other ways but that's expected at 6-7x the price of a Quest. Quest is also pushing out an update this week to support spatial video as well so you won't need a Vision Pro to enjoy those 3D videos.

In terms of games, I can get a decent cardio workout from Les Mills BodyCombat. I also picked up VR Mini Golf recently and it's a solid entry - it feels pretty close to real mini golf like Manic! said.

One of the bigger developments recently is UEVR which is a PC mod that converts games built on Unreal Engine 5 into VR game. Doesn't work with every game but it's pretty slick to see play old games from a 1st-person perspective.

I think as with virtually all tech going forward, the concept of having your processors within the hardware itself like this is going to be gone in a decade or less.

Soon the concept of having a physical gaming console will be gone and everything will be done through the cloud etc.

I don’t see why somthing like this wouldn’t follow the same evolution. It will just require an E-sim and when you can get 300-500mbs it will be infinitely cheaper to have the processing done remotely as opposed to selling bulky hardware like this

Not only that, developers would lose their ecosystem, nothing to tie you in from a hardware perspective if everything is cloud.

Do you remember the first time you got a 2nd monitor? Remember how it changed everything? How about your 3rd? How about when you started replacing those with larger monitors? Curved monitors?

The Vision Pro gives you as many monitors as you want, as infinitely big as you want, and you can step inside of them which is the ultimate version of curved. You're not locked in some VR environment. You're getting overlays, HUDs anchored and on top of your outside external environment.

Just like how back in the 00's it was frivolous and extravagant to get a 2nd monitor. And how now, no one can get shit done with a single monitor anymore:

The ultimate dream is to push all the compute externally. But there are substantial challenges in bandwidth, latency, and link reliability to even do that compute in the same room, let alone via the internet.

Humans have single digit milliseconds of tolerance for input to display latency. Any more than that and it's a shitty experience. Now you strap the displays to your head and it's not even about being annoyed: you'll actually puke. Then if you add the random glitching / stuttering of a wireless link to that, you'd rip the damn thing off and throw it through a wall.

Notion sickness is a real problem though and most people don't think about it until it happens to them - myself included. BTW, this was on an Oculus and not the Apple Vision, but I think it's relatable.

When I was playing a game where I was constantly moving virtually with the controller, but I was actually stationary in real life, I had really bad motion sickness. Think of games like VRChat and Population One (PUBG).

I eventually settled on only playing games where I moved both virtually and physically at the same time or movement wasn't constant and was teleportation-based with the controller. Think of games like Beat Saber, Walkabout Mini Golf and Eleven Table Tennis.

In my case, I think my brain was confused and couldn't process what was going on. My eyes are telling the brain that it's moving, but the brain knows that it's stationary. There's probably a better broscience explanation, but you get the idea.
