Modern(ish) N/A sports cars
underscore

I was talking to a friend about how good some N/A cars can sound and it had me wondering if there are many new-ish cars that can make those fantastic induction noises. Stuff that sounds so good with just an open intake like the old BMW I6's, the Honda H22, the Toyota 4AGE, or all those classics from the 60's-80's.
From what I can tell BMW went all turbo's by 2011? And even the newest E46 is nearly 20 years old now. Toyota stopped using the 2ZZ by 2007. Maybe the Miata is an option? not sure.

Lexus performance V8s make great noises.
The Corvette Z06 sounds great
The GT4RS also sounds amazing.
Unfortunately those cars are all quite pricy, with the cheapest being a IS500 and that's still well into the 70s.
I can't think of anything new and cheap that's NA and stands out for noise.
ND Miata, but sound alright
86/BRZ they don't standout for noise. Boxer4s aren't going to make great noises.
Everything else is either turbo, or hybrid, or both.
I never thought the E46, or any BMWs sounded great. They were all a little raspy.
I don't think Porsches sound particularly great either.
It really doesn't help that most enthusiast cars have exhausts on them, and most exhausts either a) loud for the sake of being loud, or b) sacrifice sound for the last little bit of power.

DATS NOT N/A !!!!!
just go buy a lexus V8 in either RCF, GSF, or ISF form for mucho savings. IS500 are still around 70 to 80k. At that price point you can get a beatup LC500
A decent RCF is around 40-50 last i checked, and gen 1 ISF's were 20-30k
Underscore, if you are ever in town let me know. You can take the ratrolla for a spin and see if you like that lexus sound (still not as good as the maserati/ferrari v8 but at least it wont cost me like 20k+ for repair bills)
p.s. you can always get a coyote 5.0 v8 cheap. Mustang GT's are dime a dozen and they sound okay
p.p.s. lotus w/ a toyota v6
p.p.p.s Used Aston v8 or v12 (prepare to die from the repair costs tho)

Just to be fair, a beat up LC500 means it was driven over 10,000km and maybe a non-dealership oil change. :accepted:

I think the listing is already gone as it used to show up in richmond. But this dickbag is selling a 2018 w/ 60,000kms on it for still 80k. I think its been in a few accidents too

you know what car had a really good exhaust note stock?
The VQ35 350Z and G35.... except everyone ruins them and straight pipe sounds like shit....
The stock exhaust on them are like the perfect tone and volume... you can just cruise at night with windows down....
Those sounded good.

The Lexuses(eseseses) sounds great but they're $$$.
Some of the domestic V8's sound pretty good but I think that's all exhaust noise.
350Z/G35 sounded great with a stock exhaust, especially at low revs. And now even the last ones are 16 years old.
I did find an NC Miata with ITBs that sounded really good. The ND's I've found sound okay but I haven't looked much.
FR-S/BRZ/GT86 I haven't found any intakes that sound very good.
Surprisingly the E210 Corollas can sound pretty good but I think calling those sports cars is probably pushing it a bit.

Is there anything with an N/A I6 anymore? I haven't been able to think of one.

Coyote Mustang 5.0s were like 32k CAD in 2020 with employee pricing, wild.
My preference is for the Challenge/Charger twins for best factory exhaust note. The perfect combo of rasp and aggressiveness (like the Mustang) but also with enough fullness and bass (like the GM)

My friend had one of these. Great car to drive. Slow car fast feel. You can keep up with a Type R that's just cruising if you REALLY try. I didn't know how hard he had to try to keep up with us until I drove it. You gotta bang 1-2-3 just to keep up with a Type R taking it really easy, but that's the beauty of it. You can have fun without breaking into jail speeds.

I'd probably be pretty happy with a 128. As much as I lust after V8+ stuff like the Ratrolla/ISF/C63/Astons/etc I much prefer light, nimble cars to drive despite never really owning one lol. I loved my friends MR-S and I think I'd really like anything like an IS300/Altezza/AE86/Miata. Probably an FR-S too.

NA sports cars are getting harder and harder to find. I guess you can find an older 987 Boxster/Cayman or E9x M3. I can't think of many cars newer than that that sound decent. Frankly, I'd be happy just to not have fake engine noise piped into the cabin.
I know there is a sound tube mod that people do to ND Miatas to to give it more intake noise:

I think we're well into the "ish" part by now lol. Unless there's something we've missed the only cars still available new without getting expensive are a Miata and Corolla. Moderately expensive you've got Lexus and Porsche. Honda and BMW haven't done it since 2011? Nissan 2007? The really sporty Toyotas since 2006? They made some cool engines past then like the 2GR but unless you buy a Lotus the best thing it went into was a Camry?
And I don't think anyone made an N/A I6 since 2011.

They put the 2GR into some interesting things, we just didn't get them or didn't get the cool kids version.
The RWD FSE went into the GR Mark X with a 6sp back in 2018. That would have been the car I'd be driving if they offered here.
The Aussies got the Aurion TRD which is a Camry with a SC 2GR.
The most performance we got here was the IS350. The 2GR combined with the gen3 IS F sport chassis was amazing, but by then BMW was already into the 350hp territory with the N55 and not many were sold.
Honda never made a huge splash with their J engines, but they were decent in the TL's which came with a stick up till 2012.
Nissan was making the VQ37 till last year with the 370Z.
But yeah not much to choose from brand new.

I really like the Honda K20C2 that is used in the 10th and 11th gen Civic. Neither cars are sporty by nature, but they do drive incredibly well, and aftermarket support for both platforms are strong. That K20C2 retains all the good old school Honda engine characters, but blends the modern K engine torque along with it. If I was still in my 20's, and it is the only car I have, I'd totally rice it out to make it my wannabe sports car.

The first gen R8 came into production in 2007 with a 4.2L V8. 414 HP.
Then the second gen R8 had a 5.2 L V10 engine from the Lambo LP560-4 starting in 2009. 518 HP.

The amount of variance in S2k I've driven is insane.

imo it's less so the overheating ... it's a heavy crossover platform and it really feels it: vague and vibrat-y shifter, little steering feel, super vibrat-y VQ37 that hella shakes at the high rev range, etc.
For equivalent or better driving dynamics, I'd be in ANY S550 5.0 Coyote.
For more comfort, very progressive chassis, and better control feel (steering/shifter), the Challenger takes the cake.
For just a better sports car, the Camaro drives like the E46, very eager.

They're getting discontinued because imo other than the powertrain and chassis tuning, it's a really shitty car that feels scary to daily drive for all the reasons you mentioned.
I feel the chassis tuning strikes the goldilocks balance of compliance (super rare in modern sports cars) and firmness to feel agile the way the E46 did. Brake pedal and steering feel were both progressive and consistent which is a rarity these days (looking at you... BMW, Ford, and Mercedes).
Keep in mind the rental came with shitty all seasons (that the rental company might've replaced with Chinese tires if there was a flat) and definitely didn't have the Brembo brakes nor the 1LE package that comes with 275s in the back.

Even if you can break even you're out ~$5400 in taxes. There's so many cars I would've owned briefly if it wasn't for the stupid taxes.
Now you could just consider that the price of the experience of owning a dream car for a while and in the grand scheme of things that's probably not terribly expensive as a bucket list experience. But for the same money you could do one of those Porsche subscriptions and have a Cayman/Boxster/911 for a month with no risk of there being an additional cost. Also less risk of falling in love with it and then having to explain to your spouse why you're not selling the car you specifically said you were only going to keep for a year lol.
Either way I'd want to plan a really good road trip or two during the ownership to really maximize the experience.

^when I was in Hong Kong I went to the Lexus dealership and they said the LC wasn’t even available for purchase there.
Weird.

LC500 is such an under rated machine...
an actual reliable, useable... aston martin kind of car.

I just wish more people our age drives it. there is ZERO lc community in vancouver.
I think the occasional fob drives it, but otherwise its old white men. Normal asian dudes cant justify paying ~170k for a lexus

I've seen a few around Nanaimo. I like seeing them because then I can think to myself 'and they say the G87 M2 is heavy!'. :alonehappy:
They do sound mega though.

IT IS HEAVY!!! 3900lbs on such a small car vs 4400lb on the LC which is twice the size

We would have one if we didn't have kids.
Before kids we had a Miata and Mini Cooper at one point, we don't need big cars.

It has always seemed to me that there are only 3 types of customers interested in V8:
- boomer generation that grew up in N.America
- those looking for executive sedans
- those looking for V8 muscle cars
Very few Asian dudes fall into these few categories.

You might be surprised at the number of FOBs driving Challenger in the Seattle area .... maybe 70% of them are Asian driven and always a V8
The southside ABCs are in Subarus ofc (which imo are less comfortable, reliable, and economical to run than what's essentially a pickup truck motor in a car) and the northside ABCs are in BMW/MB

Ditto on that.
There is a huge sub-culture of super FOB Asian guys driving around in Mustangs, Challengers, and Camaros here in the GTA. I've seen a growing number of them in Los Angeles too.

I would never have thought of Asian FOBs doing that... <mindblown>

I've seen my fair share in Richmond. They're memorable because I'm so used to seeing white or brown people driving them, lmao.

^^ me too. Although what gets me is a mixture of culture. You got the big American V8 muscle car, and then you got some huge anime sticker on the window or door, or some sort of Asian characters. lol.

Now that you guys mentioned it, I have seen a few Mustang GT and Camaro SS with custom vinyl graphics / anime wraps on the cars around the city. There were at least 1 Mustang GT, a Coca Cola Camaro, and a Dodge Challenger with young Asian dude drivers that took their cars to Mission too.
Kudos to these kids for taking it to the track!

I love that Ford has their Mustang GT3 in this year's WEC series. Looking forward to how they do over the next few years as they contest it in the series.

I wanted to drive an S2k forever too and was planning to buy one way back before prices shot up... but then I spent a day driving a friend's minty 2005 around and I didn't like it at all. Definitely a never meet your heroes moment for me personally.
I'm the complete opposite, I can't find many cars that are equally as fun to drive + reliable.
Everything else that's "worth" the fun per dollar is probably $80 - 100K+

Maybe they will finally take their learnings and fix the rear suspension's bushings and geometry lol

to be fair, within Vancouver it's not the most exciting thing to drive; mostly straight roads from Richmond to Downtown... and also east <> west
compared to highway commute in Seattle where you get to launch cuz of the traffic lights for the highway merge, hella blind turns coming off to Union street, decreasing radius & off camber corners on 90... was actually fun to daily

IMHO, nothing beats a Honda B series, especially the B16A with whale penis or short ram intake. You get a huge induction noise followed by a loud VTEC crossover.
I had a DB2 for over a decade with the NA only B17. I also had an AEM cold air intake for a while. Definitely a lot of fun hitting VTEC.
I think it's wild that people are using the E46 as a benchmark over 20 years later as it was just a commodity car - it really shows how great the chassis was. Can't wait to take my E46 'vert out of my garage in a few weeks' time for summer driving season.
BMW made the N52 all the way up to 2012/2013ish with the E82.

Based on their race results, it's going to take them quite some time. :concentrate:

Nothing like recycling a bad chassis from 1998 for the third time ...
At least the Challenger's recycling a good chassis from Mercedes

N52 E9x cars are getting quite a lot of attention these days. People are finally realizing these are amazing motors, albeit difficult to extract power out of. With E92 prices being down in the dumps these days, doesn't take a whole bunch of money to make them fun to drive.
