Think they would at least bring the new 500E, pretty sure Vancouver is an important market within Canada (alongside Quebec / Montreal I'm guessing). Would be nice to see the Quadrifoglio twins before they disappear.
There are lots of missing brands, but I think BMW is at least being represented by OpenRoad based on a floor plan I saw somewhere. For luxury brands, I imagine their clientele will go straight to the dealer if they want to see and/or purchase something.

Surprised that there are limited Korean and Japanese brands at the show this year. Anyone know why? Pickings look really slim.

Going forward, the Quebec EV market is likely going to shrink. The idiotic Quebec gov has racked up a deficit up to its eyeballs, and has decided to quickly and dramatically scale down and phase out its EV purchase subsidy by 2027 as one of their means to save some money.

I did not notice any cops near the Convention Centre or the Fairmont hotel area. LUL
If you want some Krispy Kreme donuts, there were some students selling Krispy Kreme on West Cordova street closer to to the Waterfront skytrain station haha. They had a big sign that said "Krispy Kreme Fundraiser".
-probably girl scouts doing a fundraiser haha.
I would say there is a low risk of getting VIs like candy from cops there.
HOWEVER, there is some eye candy at the Auto Show.
There was a pretty blonde standing near the Scenic Rush car rental exhibit. She was holding a clipboard and looking at some documents while standing in front of blue curtains.
Maybe she works for Scenic Rush?

No free swag from what I saw at some of the exhibit booths. If you are referring to free grocery bags from Toyota, no bags haha.
A Toyota employee announced a trivia contest for a chance to win a $100 VISA gift card at the show.
I figured that there would be no free bags from Honda or KIA since those car makers are not at this year’s show.
I did not see other kinds of free swag like lanyards, pens, or keychains either at any of the booths.

Looking forward to seeing the TX up close. Same with the GRC, but from the pics it looks locked.

Don't forget to add parking. If you park under Convention Centre is like $30 bucks for the day. Might be more if there is an event like Autoshow. Probably best to Skytrain it down there.

I went this evening, forgot to use the promo codes and ended up paying full price. At least parking was $15 which was less than the $27 or 30 I anticipated.
No swag like many said already, but more new models than I expected were open for people to sit in. GRC, Lexus GX, new Camry, and a bunch of GM EVs (Silverado, Blazer / Equinox EV etc.) were all there for people to go inside (and in some cases, steal stuff). Some dealers stepped up to cover missing brands like Clarkdale with their SUV lineup and ID Buzz, and Dilawri bringing out assorted supercars and models from missing automakers (EQE, XC40 Recharge etc.).
The test drive section focuses on EVs with a surprisingly wide selection. Notable demos include Hummer, Blazer, R1S/T, F150 Lightning, and the new Model 3. The more interesting models get booked out earlier so plan for that if you're visiting (ie Hummer was booked out since 3PM today) I went too late in the evening to try anything, not even the VinFast was available which is what I really wanted to try.
Overall I enjoyed the show because I went in looking to check out cars I'm unlikely to consider for myself. Spent some time at VinFast (they had everything from the VF6 to VF9), Nissan, Mitsubishi, Lincoln, Chevy, and Ford. It wasn't too too far off from my experience at the LA auto show last year, and I wasn't missing any of the brands that decided not to show up.

Honestly, I'm not sure why you guys expect the free merch this year. As much as it's doom & gloom.. I'm pretty sure no one has the marketing budget for freebies. Hell Van Auto Show doesn't even have the advertising budget to push the show lol. I barely saw anything about it. Almost forgot about it until hobz sent it out.

On the contrary, I've seen so much advertising for it throughout all my social media. Coupon codes upon coupon codes means that demand for it is lower than anticipated though, which is surprising considering how often "events" sell out and are jam packed in Vancouver.
Also, maybe its not a marketing budget thing but with the way cars have been selling the past few years with their post-covid inventory management, and people having to waitlist for months/years just to pay full fat MSRP they simply either do not see a need for it anymore or just don't want to.:okay:
I miss my annual Toyota and Honda tote-bags.

these shows dont feel the same w/o swags but still beats no show...automakers realize shows overall are already declining (not even just cars/trucks) which is why some opt out

I think there are slight variations between BMW models, but don't quote me on that.
VinFast's 2 ICE models were based on the F10 5 series and F15 X5, so they're just using stuff from their parts bin. I knew they were involved with BMWs, but the sudden familiar feeling still caught me by surprise in an otherwise very-different car :lol

Pretty mid show overall. Got to test drive the Vinfast and both me and my friend felt nauseated after.
Got a free tire pressure gauge from the VSA people.
Not many automakers there. Toyota had the best presence. VW had a funny little strip that made me wonder if it was worth them coming at all.
Like 10 different Buick crossovers that all look the same.
Absence of Honda, Kia, Hyundai, and Mazda to some extent was pretty glaring. Also no BMW, Audi, Mercedes, JLR.
Miss the prepandemic days where the upstairs was all the super cars and the basement was filled with automakers. Actually I miss the BC Place days…

Vancouver isn't alone in automakers skipping out on auto shows. Even the LA auto show lost a number of these automakers despite that market's significance for the auto industry from a global perspective. BMW/Audi/Mercedes already pulled out years ago IIRC, and the show lost Porsche last November along with Stellantis.
With this perspective, it's no surprise many brands opted out on our show as well. Like I said earlier, a few dealers such as Vancouver VW and Genesis Vancouver stepped up to fill up the OEM's absence on the show floor (hence their smaller footprint), while Trotman brought out their Jeep/Hornet/Pacificas in the test drive section for people to experience.
The purpose of auto shows started changing in the last decade when automakers figured out how to host vehicle launches online through livestreams plus a media push using YouTube / TikTok / Social Media. This trend will probably continue on in the future, so enjoy these shows while they still exist?
Anyhow, I went back today strictly for test drives - managed to squeeze 8 cars in before the DT traffic got backed up.

Publishers/Developers wanted to conduct their own events and rollouts, and thus the death of E3.

Auto show's aren't dead...
he Vancouver International Auto Show set a new overall attendance record of 129,034 for the five-day event, where more than 200 vehicles were featured, including a record number of electrics and hybrids, new offerings from manufacturers never seen before in Western Canada and numerous new highlights and feature displays.
The Auto Show’s final attendance was the best ever in the history of the event as guests revelled in the much-anticipated return following a four-year hiatus. This year’s attendance shatters previous record numbers and was buoyed by a single day attendance record of 39,823 guests on Saturday.

Yea I'm surprised there's no brands like Honda or Kia, Mazda. Considering how hard they are trying to stay relevant pushing evs. You didn't need 20 Buicks or 20 Chevys. Even Nissan had a pretty good booth with the 400z that you can sit in and they didn't gate keep you.

I wasn't really looking at the wheels, more so getting in and the seating position felt natural, the seats fit me, etc.
Wheels don't bother me as much nowadays cause I'll probably get new ones :lol

While I instantly recognized the profile as a Mustang, the second thought that came to mind was how much the front end resembed a GenX Civic (when looking at it from the side).
Crazy...

Make sure you drive it first; S650 was supposed to be on Explorer platform, but that got botched.
Its track numbers are amazing but I’m betting its last minute scramble to update S550 means it has the same problem- 0 steering feel, rear suspension disconnected and very vague.
Coming from a F80 it might not be thattt bad, but coming from Camaro the Mustang was a whoa wtf is this shit

Same here but it was.
I know one of the guys on the executive team for the show, and he said next year's show will be bigger with more manufacturers. He told me everyone involved with the show is shocked at the response; they were expecting decent crowds but not record breaking.

Glad to hear the record turnout is encouraging more manufacturers to show up in the future. I enjoy these shows and is still the best way to interact with all kinds of vehicles I would otherwise not check out.

Why would one choose to go to the auto show over just going to the automall? Doesn't the auto show just display stock cars that you can buy now? Or rather put your name down on a wait list?

There were plenty of modified cars at the Auto Show on Wednesday, March 20th. -not just stock cars that you can buy at a dealership.
Check out my March 20th post of pictures of these cars that I took on that day. I saw plenty of tuner imports at the plaza in front of the convention centre that day.
Modified GT-Rs, Supras, Golf GTI etc.
Dilawri stepped up big at the show this year with their display of exotics and pretty exclusive cars.
McLaren Senna, 750S, Artura. -saw an AMG GT Black Series.
The Senna was sick! -not often that you see a Senna worth about 1.3 to 1.4 million US in Canada. -only 500 were made.
Good luck trying to find a Senna at an Auto Mall haha.

It's a better experience to go to an auto show, mess around, and try out different cars. Most dealers are quite judgemental and won't even let you in certain cars. Either that or they don't even have the car in stock.
When's the last time you saw a Corolla Cross or Supra that you could sit in?
There's minimal selling at the show; the staff there just talks about the car. Deposit and sales process is done at the dealership.

Argh I remember I took my buddy to see the new 400z and they wouldn’t even let him sit inside it.
I’m like come on man, it’s a fucking Nissan. You guys are basically a dead brand walking right now and you’re bleeding cash like Mitsubishi. You still gonna gate keep with basically the same car as the 370z ? Fuck you.
He bought ended up buying a supra instead.

JLR Richmond was very open and non gatekeeping. Ironically, the Mercedes dealership across the street was very stingy and the entire vibe was not it. But here I was sitting in a 300K land rover and I didn't even know they were that expensive LOL.

Late post but went on Sunday. Didn't get to sit in all the cars I wanted. No Mirage at the auto show FeelsBadMan
Old coworker went Saturday and was swarmed by children and teenagers with broccoli heads.
Test drove the Vinfast and Outlander PHEV. Outlander was very impressive for a Mitsubishi. They've come a long way. Rode nice, didn't squeak or rattle at all. Mitsubishi should have no problem selling these. I would have no problem recommending these to family since they're built in Japan.
VF8 drove alright. Test route was short due to traffic. Didn't get motion sick and everything seemed screwed together. Throttle mapping not as linear as I wanted. BMW blinker stalk is annoying. Backup camera quality was decent but would sometimes lag a bit. Outlander didn't have this issue because they're using Logitech Quickcams from 2001.
Buddy that came with me tested the Lightning and Rivian. Rivian felt solid but not $150,000 solid.
Noticed cops setting up shop by crab park waiting for test drivers to floor it in the 30 zone :lawl:
Finally got to sit in a GR Corolla for the first time and...
400z interior was nicer than gr Corolla
I went to another buddys place after the show to feel the door cards on his SE Corolla hatch and they were soft touch vs hard plastic in the GR core. Seats were nicer too.
Shifter felt great, popped the hood and there's plenty of space to wrench with one cylinder lopped off. No spare tire is a big minus, I would probably just ratchet down a full size spare but I really want one now lol
TL;DR: Came for the Mirage, stayed for the GR Corolla

From what I recall the GR has no under trunk. I think I looked and only the battery is there. The AWD took up all the space and the trunk floor height is super high.
I kinda wanted to check out the phev too. My coworker just picked one up and he said it's super quiet too and he came from Acuras. I rode in a gas one and that was super comfortable and quiet already. Way nicer than model y. And the new phev now has cooled and massage seats.

There's a huge foam piece to bring the floor level up above the battery. People have been cutting the foam to fit a space saver in there.

100x better than going to the automall
I've been thinking about getting a truck for a while and every time I go to a dealership, the salespeople want me to fill out a form asking for my telephone, home address, current vehicle etc etc BEFORE I can even sit inside the car
it's like a 20 minute visit just to sit in one car for 2 minutes. Then they get offended if you don't give your personal info to them when they haven't provided any value.
At the auto show, I got to sit in a Hummer EV, F150s, Sierras, Tundra etc and got to test drive a lightning, all within an hour and 0 pressure to buy. It helped me narrow down which car I wanted so I don't need to waste time checking out other cars now.
Was a good time.

During my Hummer test drive, the test drive guy said someone took it for a joyride and was arrested after getting back to the convention center.
It's bad apples like these that cause dealers and event organizers to collect waivers and photo IDs. Unfortunately not everyone behaves.

Are you daft man? They have every bit of your info and more, just verifying your ID through sighting it and, nowadays, at TD they ask for a PIN AND they ask for a code they text to you. Also you might note they write "BCDL: #######" on their receipts too.
You go into a dealership, their cars are on an insurance policy, they have NO IDEA who you are and you take their cars out, of course they need to collect your ID in case of an incident or the test drive is unaccompanied and you disappear with their car.

I find it a bit odd how a dealer/salesperson decides if they send the customer out on their own or not. The Lexus dealer had no problem sending me off on my own while the Honda dealer sent their guy with me - generally I find the mass market brands like to have their sales people come along while the luxury brands are hit and miss.
I'd much rather be sent off on my own even if it means I have to pay a small fee for it - when I'm serious about a car I want it for at least a couple hours to really feel it out. Back in 2019 I was able to get a CX-5 for half a day but that was cause the sale guy was here on RS while the Honda guy said I could only get 30 mins with their CR-V.

I don't know what factors into that either, I've not test driven many cars but I've experienced both. Dark didn't come with me when I took a G70 out but that's because he knew me from here I think. I'm sure they make judgement calls on their impressions of people too haha

It's a crapshoot if you don't know the sales people.
It's definitely helpful if the customer is not familiar with the car or roads, or they look like they would need help with the functionality. There's also the age old adage that you make the sale by talking the customer's ear off in the car.
A lot of the mass market brands follow the old school way of sales where they come with you talk your ear off. Toyota, Honda, VW all do that.
We've had pretty random experiences with the luxury brands. We were looking at Openroad Audi, knew no one, and they just sent us off with an A3 and A4.
We've been sent off with cars at BMW before, but also denied test drives (the iX recently at Autowest came to mind)
The sales person came along on 2 different instances at MB(C350, GLC), but they left us alone other than directing us to better roads to actually try out the car.
