New Tesla Model 3 performance is here

Seems like Canadians might be screwed over, the US model lists 0 to 60 as 2.9 seconds and Canadian spec at 3.1.
Straight line performance from the new larger motor, doesn't seem much better than the last model, disappointing.

The performance is the same - 60mph is ~96.5km/h so the time difference covers that 3.5km/h difference.
It's a lot of performance for the price. The adaptive dampers and different bolstered seats are a welcome change.

Watch a little bit of “Engineering explained” on YouTube. They are running right up against the physics of grip. Can’t go much faster then that without serious changes to tire size/material.

How utterly privileged are you in life to publicly say a ~70k car anyone can buy that does 0-60 in hyper car times is disappointing.
My god.

The adaptive dampers, OEM aero pieces and sporty front seats are a nice touch. Looking forward to seeing what the updated Model Y and its performance version brings. Motors will likely be the same as this I would assume. Watching Autofocus video on this and Marques saying the front motor is the same as the previous version. Rear motor is updated and where most of the new performance is coming from.
donk.

Maybe the US model has bigger panel gaps, causing better aerodynamics for 0.2 second gain

Well… 70K used to get you an actual sports car in things like the Z06 etc.
Now we’re walking about 70k for what amounts to a fast entry level commuter car.

I'm not seeing any info on Z06 costing $70K when new. The 2006 Z06 was $89,900 when new which is ~$127K in today-dollars.

SHHHH Honda don't ruin it for them, we're back to an era where only acceleration figures matter. Driving experience and engagement is meaningless.

He's not that far off for spitballing a number, 2003 Z06 was $45k which is about $80-ish in today dollars

Supposedly the numbers are without rollout vs the old one with roll out so if its true then the difference is bigger.
US website states 510hp vs canadian website 460bhp

I asked spy ballooon if I could trade my boring Camry for a boring Tesla and she said no, It might burn down house. So I guess I ain’t gonna get one just because of the off chance it sets spy balloon on fire ……

Hmm... I do see the 500+hp vs 460hp for the Canadian site. I also did the math, 0.3 seconds slower to cover the the 3.5km shortfall doesn't make sense.

I'm sure people looking for 5 seaters to haul their family around are cross shopping Z06's lol. Just bolt the car seat to the roof I guess haha

Figured out why the US spec has 50 more horsepower for anyone interested.

no incentive to trade in my 2019 M3P now. I'd probably swap the seats if there are spare parts out there.
I believe there should be ludarious or plaid model coming out soon? that's another story.

No other model is coming out unless they do another ota update to unlock more power.
Just ludicrous badging on the seats.
Will wait for C&D to do their test. I hope it does hit high 10s in the 1/4 mile.

Dang it.... lolol, wait a few years and see if Fremont M3P will become avail in Canada....Especially when the Canadian spec is NOT comparably cheaper for the reduced Performance....

I was listening to Carmudgeon Podcast yesterday at lunch walking around downtown, he was jizzing all over the new M3P. Sounds impressive, like to try the new seats out on it he was really raving about that.
Something about the review made me laugh though, he went from saying that being a reviewer is boring now because nobody can possibly rationalize choosing anything except that car... you can make all the excuses you want about driving feel and other things and none of it makes sense to not get that car.... and right after he says that, he says he'd rather drive an E46 330ci ZHP because reasons.
Huh? lol
Badhobz
04-25-2024, 08:11 AM
Meh. I also rather have a e46 zhp. It’s not a numbers game anymore, it’s about the experience now. Can’t win the numbers game vs EVs anyways.
When a 380k GT3RS gets dusted by a stupid 100k refrigerator, it’s pointless.

you can make all the excuses you want about driving feel and other things
But how a given car makes you feel about driving or owning it is the only thing that matters lol. Of course it's also the only thing you can't really quantify so a reviewer can't say anything about it.

I agree completely, maybe I didn't write it very well, those are HIS words not mine... if you listen to what he said on the Podcast, he said those reasons aren't valid because the M3P is too good and the M3P being too good invalidates any other possible argument you could make including how a vehicle makes you feel.
Then he said he'd rather drive X car because of the reasons he just said are invalid.
What he was saying is totally hypocritical.

I think I got what you meant, my reply just wasn't great. It sounds like when Jeremy Clarkson reviewed the Skoda Yeti, but he was clearly joking and it sounds like this guy wasn't.

That's already stupid fast, I was driving a model x with 3.9 sec and it rips already. I really don't see why people hate on model 3, it drives fine, the low center of gravity really helps in turns and it feels very neutral to me. Grip and power delivery is fine even with the shitty eco tires. Unless you guys drift Richmond raceway daily I don't see how you guys say the car is bad if you think about what it is designed for. Try whipping a stock accord, Camry, or a cla around, anything else in the same price bracket. :lawl:

I value Jason's opinions overall given his professional experience, but I find his recent enthusiasm with the Tesla CT/M3P and the 5N a bit out of character compared to his demeanor before the CT review. The amount of gushing over these EVs lately is a bit strong for me to take his opinions too seriously.
I'm sure the M3P is an exciting car to drive so I'll probably take one out for a demo drive when they arrive. It's not an enthusiast car, but I appreciate the performance it brings for the price (even if it's mostly from straight-line acceleration).

I don't think people are legitimately hating on it. The price dropped quite a bit, so it's obvious Tesla is heading in a different direction with this performance model.
The last M3P was heavier and less aerodynamic yet achieved the same straight line time. Meaning the better motor on this one isn't being taken advantage for the Canadian model. Hopefully software updates change that, otherwise the motor power is a step back from last gen.

I heard the new M3P do better at higher speed. Max power is said to be now at 110km/h instead of 70-80 in older model. For sure 1/4mile should be quicker, let's wait for first run.
After 4 yrs of driving, 3.4s is the quickest my feet can do in public hwy and my head still hurt (if you have ever driven one, you know how it feels)

Actually now it's not even "but what about the twisties" because Teslas do fine on the track.
Now it's people insisting "oo but it's got no soul. no fun to drive!!" :D
