The Rally Association of Vancouver Island (RAVI) is hosting a paved road TSD in Victoria on August 10th. Not a lot of details yet but sounds like a full day event that should be a lot of fun. I'll be heading down to do it with my brother in his BMW.
RAVI site: https://www.rallyassociationvi.com/
FB page: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61555797148824
On a side note if there's any cool events happening Aug 11th that I can hit up on my way back please share.

What is this? You drive around the island?

Basically drive around to hit checkpoints at designated time intervals without speeding - can't be early, you get penalized, can't be late, you also get penalized.

^I concur. I get the whole "precision driving" thing, but it doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun to me.

Apart from "don't drive like an idiot" you're not exactly required to do anything so it's whatever you want it to be. You can go full stress and go for maximum accuracy. You can do it seat-of-the-pants, completely wing it, and have a laugh at your crazy score. Or anything in between. There's typically multiple classes and people with varying levels of seriousness in each class because there's no wrong way to do it. Just try not to crash and try not to get lost.
I'm just there to have fun, so whatever class I enter I only take it 50% seriously at most.

These types of rallies are great, I did one as a timing vehicle with an RS member super super long ago in the snow in the interior.... Heart of Darkness rally I think it was called?.. even as a timing vehicle we had to drive pretty fast to get to the checkpoints in time to get the times of vehicles that were going by as part of the race. I think they were moving at a decent pace!!
My biggest memory from that was stopping in a clearing in the middle of absolutely nowhere in the middle of the night in the snow and looking up at the sky and I'd never seen so many stars in my life... like there was more stars than black in the sky... just incredible.

I’ve never done one, but I’m tempted to join. To keep the speed limit with stop signs, corners etc. you’ve honestly got be going at a pretty good clip to keep up the average.

It's actually some of the most fun driving you can do. The unofficial slogan is "Slow enough to be safe, but fast enough to have fun"
The average speed is "speed limit". But that's average. When you're driving through the FSR with hairpins, stop signs, etc, You can basically drive as fast as you can.. especially when you miss a turn and are trying to catch up. My favourite memory is on a wide snowy FSR in the Subaru, full throttle at full lock at like 140km/h staring out the side window, thinking I'm Colin McRae..
My least favourite memory is going down a small hill, trying to slow down but realizing its basically pure ice, and then sliding off into the snowbank and smashing up the fender and bumper.
Highly recommended. You learn a huge invaluable lesson of car control, well beyond autox, track, even drifting. Although Paved TSD might not be.. the same amount of fun.. So I would recommend Heart of Darkness, Thunderbird, Totem etc. Check the RallyBC website, though they don't update very often.

Paved TSD is way safer than unpaved TSD, haha. My first one was Thunderbird on a very snowy year in a FWD GTI with non studded tires. That was a blast, but we did end up in a snowbank couple of times thankfully with no damage.

Well the event was this weekend and it was a lot of fun going through some absolutely gorgeous back roads. We had a couple hiccups with Richta misbehaving and me messing up a bit of the math but we still finished in the top 10 of 23 entries so we were happy with that.
There's a 2 day gravel event Oct 11-13th I'm going to try to make it to and another paved novice event on Nov 2nd around Cowichan Valley.

Is this something I could take the M2 on or would I regret it?
I should think as long as it's not smashing pot holes all day it would be fine right?

Coast to Coast is on gravel, I don't know what the FSRs are like on the island but they may be a little rough for an M2?
Falling Leaves is another fully paved novice event on Nov 2 in Cowichan Valley that should be fine for anything. Rallye Round the Capital was all smooth roads and no problem for the various Porsches or my brothers lowered m235i.

RAVI announced the 2025 event dates. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/155D5Y1umd/
Paved novice events:
Tour De North - May 24th, Qualicum Beach
Rallye 'Round the Capital - Aug 9th, Victoria
Falling Leaves - Nov 1st, Cowichan Valley
Gravel events:
Coast to Coast - May 2-4th, Campbell River
Midnight - Sept 20th, Duncan
I did Rallye 'Round the Capital and Coast to Coast last year. The RRC had a bit of a steep learning curve if someone showed up totally green and tried to figure it out, but it was a lot of fun and you can do it in any car. Coast to Coast was a blast but the north island back roads have some spots where the gravel is more just small rocks lol. Midnight is a new event this year that I'm excited to try out.
and WCRA has the event info up for Thunderbird. Feb 1-2nd, Merritt to Penticton and back. https://www.rallybc.ca/archives/2025/2025_TBird.htm
