Must-haves:
-EV
-hauls the family, plus Grandma too (min 6 seats)
-AWD

Nice-to-haves:
-urban offroading (curb-hopping no problem)
-actual offroading
-panoramic moonroof
-CEO is not a dick

Budget:
-max 80k before tax & rebates (hopefully less, hopefully a lot less)

I can't come up with anything but EV9 and VW Buzz. Can anyone think of anything else?

Buy something used and wait for R3 to come out? :alone:

You have very few choices and if I remember correctly you've already been down the Rivian R1 road

Rivian leases in US are really subsidized ($700/mo for R1S).
Heard leases are coming to Canada in first half of 2025.

EV9s are nice but I'm not sure if dealer markups are still rampant despite seeing more FB listings for new units. I don't think there's anything else under $80k that can seat 6 in the new car market right now. Maybe give Brantford Kia shout?

Any reason it has to be an EV? Something like a mid-spec $60k Trailsport Pilot will give you a sizable budget for gas over the next few years while more 6-7 seater EV options arrive.

There's really slim pickings with EV + 6 seats and no Tesla.

EV9, Rivian R1S, and.... I'm drawing a blank.
Being in Toronto, a PHEV isn't going to cut it for you either.

I think Europe and Asia has more choices but I have no idea why it's so bad here.

PS: Oh Volvo is bringing their EX90, that's pretty sweet.

R1S and EX90 are both over 100k so it's quite a stretch from an 80K budget. Volvo's doing a road show at the dealers - not sure if they've made their way to Ontario yet.

Asia has way more choices via the Chinese EV Minivans - Zeekr 009, Denza D9, Maxus MIFA9 etc.

I really like the iX, it's ugly as sin but the package and interior is amazing and imo there's nothing like it on the market. I would seriously consider the iX if not for range anxiety for what we need it for.

There's also the nerd factor where the body is CFRP. A used iX 50 at 75k won't be loaded, but it'll also have most of the wants checked off as well. In BC, the 5% tax on the iX makes it a great buy compared to new at over 120k out the door.

Too bad he needs 6 seats.

I drove an iX when my car was in service and that CFRP looked sweet, no need to worry bout rust, Which matters cause rabidrat is in toronto. But the trunk is a bit small, more like X3 instead of X5. I was also blown away by the bowers & wilkins stereo on the iX, wow!

Find the best dollar for value 5 seater EV SUV and on the occasions that grandma is coming out to shopping or lunch, drive 2nd car and/or uber her :lol.

Unless that 6 seater option is a regular/often use requirement ... it's really limiting your options.

If you can get over the looks, the new 2024 Santa Fe in Luxury Trim is a 7 seater that will get your out the door after fees and taxes under $60K, like $59,400 in BC. And honestly we sell lots

- ventilated and heated seats up front with memory~
- heated seats 2nd row
- duo sunroof
- 360 camera with blind spot cameras
- wireless android auto and apple carplay
- and stupid amount of cup holders and usb ports looooooool
- 110V regular wall plug that can actually do a 2-slice toaster / motel hairdryer (with the car on ofc lolol)

There are no mark ups here at BC and you can shop the dealerships, hoping its the same in the GTA?

In general, I feel like PHEV is simultaneously the best and worst of both worlds LOL~

In TO, I'd imagine that because of the greater distance that people generally need to drive everyday, they'll be depleting a fully charged battery pretty much on a daily basis. That'd wear your battery down faster; you still need to get gas on a regular basis, and you have the added complexity of both systems. So you're getting less from the "best of both worlds" portion of the ownership experience, and more of the "worst of both worlds" portion instead.

EvoFire
06-29-2024, 11:27 AM
Just curious, how come a PHEV would be an issue specifically in Toronto?

My understanding is Toronto is much more spread out and you drive significantly longer distances. A 50-70km electric range isn't going to cut it if you are driving 40km one way regularly. Granted, you are potentially still saving money at the pump, but not nearly as much as you'd like and the premium you'd pay over a regular gas car.

For a X5 iirc it's about a 10-12k premium depending on options.

Nevermind the fact that if you are regular draining the battery down to nothing, you'll kill the battery much quicker.

I'm a wait and see for it - I would have strongly preferred the 2 row version and I'm skeptical the pricing for the 3 row will be something I want to spend on a VW - if a loaded ID4 is $63k then I'm thinking a loaded Buzz will be pushing $80k. At that price I'll just get an Audi Q6 (I don't need the 3rd row) even if I LOVE the looks and practicality of the Buzz. I also think it's on the larger size for what my wife is capable of piloting though it's only an inch longer than the Crown Signia that I'm really interested in.

I'm hoping they will bring the Crown Sport to North America.

I don't think anyone will make lowering springs for the Crown of any variant. I hope I am wrong.

If you've ever test driven the Crown, you'll really appreciate the quality of the suspension. That thing rides like it's on a cloud. Coilovers would totally ruin the whole idea of the Crown. :lol

I’m quite impressed with the crown in general. My co worker bought one and I drove it to ramen with him. It’s basically a front wheel drive LC. The platform is based off the LCs platform so the underpinnings are quite sporty. Of course it’s heavy as fuck and the steering is a bit numb, but it’s a luxury cruiser and it does that exceptionally well.

I was interested when they were first announced and got to drive the one in Vancouver but that was the short wheel base version which I prefer. I'm thinking it'll be about $75k-80k here too. I put a deposit on a Rivian R2 for the wife when it was announced instead.

Most of the interior here is hard except the seats, headliner, and steering wheel. It reminded me of the Honda Element which I think many people may not like at $70-80k. This theme extends to the rest of the interior - it was a giant sea of hard plastic.

The EV9 has a much softer interior for comparison.

Generally I can't take asymmetry in an interior. Look at this C6 steering wheel. Not sure if that's just camera angles but damn, I've never been able to un-see how the right spoke is thicker than the left:
