Put it all here. Pretty creative to have Opening Ceremony not in a traditional stadium but to send the festivities and athletes down the Seine River ... at least it sounds creative. Let's see how it actually pans out and the security measures.

Lyles will win 2 gold medals this Olympics, in at least 2 of the following:

-100m (likely)
-200m (guaranteed)
-400m relay

Really liking this opening ceremony with the parade of the athletes down the river and the performances.
Genius really from a marketing perspective for tourism. A stadium is a stadium is a stadium but wow they took advantage of the global stage and selling the city of Paris hard.

Found it amusing they jammed the massive Canadian team and the also massive Chinese team on the same boat while so many other boats came out 80% empty.
Also the South Korea team being announced incorrectly loll.

Apparently the athlete village food situation has been quite a scandal. These are the best of the best atheletes we have in the world, and the geniuses that organized the food and meal plans wasn't even providing enough proteins to feed the athletes bcos they wanted to be more environmentally conscious?!?

What a bunch of woke idiots...

Shit is hitting the fan, stories of them doing this back in 2021 Olympic soccer where Canada won gold ... questions of whether they might strip them of the medal. And that both Canadian Men and Women Soccer coaches have been implicated in drone spying on rehearsal ... Men as recently as attempting to in COPA !! :concentrate:

The men's basketball team of Canada played a hard fought game against Greece.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was clutch! SGA made clutch buckets with step back 3's and layups when the game was close late in the fourth quarter.

RJ Barrett with a team high 23 points.

Greece played good defence. However, they only have Giannis as their main scoring option. Greek Freak had 34 points.

On to the next game vs. Australia on Tuesday!

Although Canada is in the group of Death with strong teams like Australia and Spain, I think that this team can get to the knockout games and win a medal.

Is anyone here a tennis fan? Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz won their opening match in doubles.

Rafa plays his long time rival Djokovic in singles in a second round match. A clash of two tennis GOATs. FeelsGoodMan

Crazy, Gold in Judo this morning and a dominant performance by Summer Mcintosh for gold in the 400m medley, crazy performance
I watched Summer McIntosh in the prelims and she was dominant and won, except the final lap which is freestyle, where the Japanese swimmer was faster than anyone and was able to finish second from fourth.. That was wild.

HK wins 2 more medals today! Another gold in fencing for Ka Long Cheung (he won gold in Tokyo as well) so they're tied with Canada for gold medals! And Bronze in 200m freestyle for Siobhan Haughey, her third Olympic medal, making her the most decorated Olympic athlete in HK.

It's been fun to watch HK at the last couple Olympics - In Tokyo they tripled their historic medal total by winning 6, and now they have 3 already.

Currently ranked #10 in the medal standings, since it's based on gold medals (I know Americans like to pretend it's based on overall, but it's not - that's just used as a tie breaker)

It's crazy because they don't have the support programs they have in China... The funding and everything is separate, so being in the top 10 several days in is crazy impressive (not that it will finish that way)

for what it's worth,

while China has national funding, it doesn't equal to the best training, where as some of these HK athletes are getting actual world class training and heavy corporate sponsors.

I think Sioban Haughey trains with the worlds best already being a product of Michigan Wolverines, the same people that trained Michael Phelps.

Canada wins the silver medal in the women's rugby 7 final. Gold for New Zealand.

Team Canada is undefeated in men's basketball. Good win over Australia.

I am hoping that Canada has a chance to play the Americans. A great test to see how the Canadian team measures up against the Dream Team.

Canada has arguably the best backcourt with Shai Gilgeous Alexander and Jamal Murray. RJ Barrett is playing well.

As usual, Team USA is stacked with NBA stars. Kevin Durant only played limited minutes in USA's 110-84 win over Serbia.

KD had 21 points. 8 for 8 shooting. 3 for 3 for 3 pointers. Crazy efficient offence from KD.

Having watched lots before and still watch some TVB dramas, fencing is often featured as a sport some random character on the show dabbles in. I never really realized it was really a thing in Hong Kong but I guess it is and kind of neat to see the success they're having.

She had elevated testosterone in a test (I mean you would expect that right?) and a corrupt organization that no longer has ties to the IOC and moved itself to Russia also claimed she had male chromosomes.

She's a masculine woman, and that's that, like so many top athletes in the Olympics and all sports. There are no transgender athletes allowed at the Olympics. Better boxers have beat her, including in Tokyo. This loser quit after one jab to the face, and got everyone up in arms (I don't remember this controversy during Tokyo)

We've seen this a million times going back decades. In the 70's it was Billie Jean King who ignorant morons would call a man, just because she was so dominant. And then in the 80's it was Martina Navratilova, and the Williams sisters in the 90's and 00's, and so on.

Now it's this boxer.. The level of ignorance fueled anger is constant, but now it's being harvested for political gain.

Don't let yourself get harvested.

The Algerian boxer is deemed to have DSD -- differences of sexual development, and the condition causes her to have X and Y chromosome in each cell (a typical male pattern) and male-range testosterone levels. That gives her a genotypical and gender-related advantage over other female athletes which she competes against. Michael Phelps and his big paddle hands are merely a phenotypical and physical phenomenon. Genetically, he does not enjoy a significant advantage over his competitors.

It is true that Khelif is not undefeatable. At the same time, there is a reason we generally do not pit male athletes against female athletes in a competition.

What is the source of this? And has it been disputed?
I read it in one of the reputable European newspaper earlier today -- potentially the Independent or the Guardian. But now I can't seem to find the article again. Instead, most articles just mention the possibility of DSD, with Khelif not commenting on the speculation.

There is mention of Khelif being DSD from the IBA last year. However as those of us discussing this would probably know, IBA is not the boxing body running the show at Paris. The IOC-created body -- PBU -- makes no mention of gender / sex testing for the athletes. Gender indication on the athlete's passport seems to be the only requirement for an athlete to compete in the female category.

The IOC also did not deny that Khelif has been tested to have a high testosteron level -- although potentially, they may not have any testosterone level test results for the boxer at all. But in my eyes, only citing the passport requirement is a pretty weak and weasely clarification that has done little to clear out the rumours.

At the end of the day, this lack of clarity in the IOC policies is the real reason why we have this controversy now. This is a massive disservice to all athletes competing in the games, as well as a failure to the audience worldwide. Even if Khelif wins gold, there'll forever be an asterisk beside her name and the medal from IOC's policy vacuum.

Yes that IBA is a disgraced organization that was ditched for various reasons (not this one) related to corruption.

If she disputes it, then I believe her

She did pop for high test. From there they have to decide if they want to have strict rules for hormone levels, or base it on other things.

At the end of the day this is a woman using her physical tools like any athlete. She's not this man pretending to be a woman and destroying the field. She has been beaten.. This quitter got popped by a jab and quit.. She would get destroyed by some of the better women there (better than Khelif). This is not a controversial topic cause by policy, and there will be no asterisk if she wins, except from insane or ignorant people (who don't matter in the end).

So now she's being called a "faggot" by insane grifters, and being called transgender by people getting sucked in by these insane grifters.

My posts here are to hopefully open peoples eyes to what is going on, and not just blindly spread hatred.

To me, the core of the issue hinges on whether Khelif is DSD or not. If her biological makeup is providing her with both X and Y chromosomes, then it would be unfair to have her compete in the female category. If she is not DSD, then obviously she would be fully entitled to compete with other females.

So far, Khelif has not commented on the issue, nor has she provided any proof to otherwise confirm or deny whether she is DSD. Because of this, if she goes on to win her boxing matches, the controversy of whether she deservingly won those matches are just going to continue.

The IOC policy failure that I spoke of lies in how IOC did not clearly define the eligibility requirements for the competing athletes to convince the public that the games' outcomes are fair.

"Her biological makeup" is of no concern to the IOC or you, any more than Shaquille O'Neil's "biological makeup" is for being big and tall, or Simone Biles for being small and strong, or Michael Phelps for having a huge number of genetic advantages including a body that produces low levels of lactic acid.

Being a female is what entitles her to compete with females.

I get that people are mad that they can't be mad about a trans boxer, but making shit up about genetic policy is bad boomer behavior. You should reconsider acting that way. You're not protecting female boxers or anyone else, you're just coming up with new ways to exert control over peoples' will.

Traum

Respectfully, I disagree with what you are saying here.

If the genetic make up between biological males and biological females do not matter in competitive sports, then all sports competition should be mixed gender and inclusive. But obviously that is absurd.

And while we are at it, we might as well abolish age categories too. Let's mix all the U16, U18, U21 teams along with the adult teams as well as the masters and seniors teams. And include the little leaguer children too, because not doing so would be age discriminatory, right?

I am not gonna call your suggestion woke behaviour in the same way you call mine as "bad boomer behaviour", but I do recommend you to reconsider what you've said just now.

Canada beats Spain 88-85 in men's basketball! Undefeated in their group A.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and RJ Barrett were clutch in this game, especially in the last three minutes. Huge 3 pointer from Barrett to help Canada maintain a lead with about a minute left in the game.

The Spaniards are tough. Their bench scored over 50 of their points. Although Canada has more NBA players than Spain, the Spanish played hard until the end of the game.

On to the quarterfinals for Canada! Hopefully, they can play the weakest team they can get depending of the outcome of other games today.

Shaquille O'Neil's "biological makeup" is for being big and tall, or Simone Biles for being small and strong, or Michael Phelps for having a huge number of genetic advantages including a body that produces low levels of lactic acid.

Initially I was outraged as these kind of topics of transwomen competeing as women do trigger me. But after more research from what I'm aware of, I have changed my stance since what it comes down for me is whether Imane enhanced herself through any "modifications" or not. And it sounds like she didn't. She's just born genetically "gifted" with higher levels of testosterone, which makes it no different than the examples listed above like Michael Phelps which gave him an edge over his competition. It just so happens Phelps is a man. Should he have been disqualified or put in his own category that's above men? Hypothetic "mutant" division?

If the genetic make up between biological males and biological females do not matter in competitive sports, then all sports competition should be mixed gender and inclusive. But obviously that is absurd.

But it's such a gray area. Some women are born with more testosterone and that's outside of their control. Where do you draw the line? If a person was born female and never did anything unnatural to her body, then how can she not be considered a female to compete as a female?

---

The first girl quit after taking a couple shots in the face. It set up a perfect narrative, but in hindsight, she also sounds like a quitter considering Imane just had her 2nd fight, the other controversial boxer Liu Yu-ting had her fight, and they all went the length to a decision, rather than an easy 1st round win.

The only thing I'll say about that is Phelps swimming in a pool isn't giving someone else brain damage. There's a reason men excel in basically every sport compared to women and that's testosterone. You're talking a difference in muscle mass, strength, bone density, the amount of force you can put behind a punch compared to a regular woman in the same weight class.

Anyways people will have different opinions on this, I'm not gonna call you insane cause you don't agree with me

I agree it's a gray area, and that makes it difficult to draw the line. But seeing how competitive sports has always "drawn the line" between males and females, it seems entirely appropriate to use biological gender as the marker to draw that line. And what determines biological gender? It's whether your cells carry an XY chromosome pair, or an XX chromosome pair.

In Khelif's case, there is no concrete evidence to suggest that she has DSD, although there is inconclusive evidence to suggest that IBA might have said Khelif has DSD. This is why I said that everything hinges on whether Khelif (or any other female competitor) has DSD or not. If she does not have DSD, then obviously she should be competing in the female category.

But if she has DSD, then even though she has done nothing to "modify" herself to be a female, unfortuantely she does not meet the criteria to compete in the female category if we use biological gender (ie. the natural presences of XX or XY chromosome pairs in body cells) as the deciding factor.

The next step from here becomes even more complicated and messy. How would the IOC determine whether a female competitor has DSD or not? In the case of performance enhancing drugs, the solution is to test every single competitor to indicate there is no bias or discrimination. But if you adopt the same approach to test all female athletes for DSD, it is gonna be an absolute PR disaster in every imaginable way.

All in all, it's just one big giant mess. FailFish
But it's such a gray area. Some women are born with more testosterone and that's outside of their control. Where do you draw the line? If a person was born female and never did anything unnatural to her body, then how can she not be considered a female to compete as a female?

After more info came out, that the Italian boxer is a far right cop, I wouldn't be shocked if she planned all along to take a dive after taking her first hit, or got into trouble.

She "apologized" without taking anything back, saying she basically has to go by the IOC rules. (which don't apply here, since there are no rules forbidding cis women from boxing other cis women, even if they are tall and strong)

The whole thing is a farce being set up to make people angry. And as you can see it's working. Even here. We some really angry people getting mad about "liberal dog whistling" and "libtard hills to die on" and writing in all caps about being called bigoted.

And now you are totally getting into conspiracy theories of your own.

This is the Olympics, not your local track and field meet that happens somewhere close by every 2 months. Even though female boxing may not be the most popular or common sports around, getting selected to represent your country at the highest level of competition is still not going to be an easy feat. Esp for physical sports, if you have one shot at the Olympics, you take it and you give it everything you've got because you are going to be a different athlete the next Olympics come around. In Carini's case, she is 25 years old now, which basically means she is at her physical peak. Even if she can qualify for the Olympics again next time, it is highly questionable whether she will be as strong a boxer as she is now.

And then there is the training and conditioning to get into Olympic form -- serious athletes would likely come up with their high level training plan a year or two in advance. And then there are the years of hard work before reaching the national level. No athlete in the right mind would throw all of that training and effort away by intentionally planning to dive ahead of their match.

So don't be ridiculous to suggest something so ridiculous. It is beneath you.

And BTW the only reason you're going after this person now is because of the accusations of her being trans. Without that, everyone would be fine with her just like they were at the last Olympics. Just like nobody goes after any random rugby player who is huge and strong in a physical sport because of genetics or whatever.

There's no solution that's going to make everyone happy, I don't think they should be fighting men either. It's a rare enough condition that they can't even make a separate category so do you try and make it fair for 99% of the athletes or let one person have the advantage? Do we just open it right up and let trans women compete too? I'm sure your opinion will be a lot different than mine but I'm not gonna start hurling far left insults at you.

If you had actually bothered to read what I wrote before, you would have known right from the start in both the Trump thread as well as this Olympic thread that I have mentioned how the issue is not about Khelif being trans, but my initial reading from a newspaper at the suggestion that she has DSD. Of course, you can choose to selectively read what you want to read, and I can't stop that. You can also choose to continually harp about how I am making this a trans issue, when I have indicated a few times that it isn't.

She was the same person then that she is now, but this time the usual suspects on twitter got all the people to pile on with hatred and ignorance because someone quit a match 45 seconds in. It is "DSD", which stands for "Differences of Sexual Development", not "DND". If you were going to use it as a point of discussion, at least make an effort into getting right. Otherwise, you'll just come across as being dismissive to begin with, and not really interested in what the other party has to say.

If that's the case, what's the point of even bothering to discuss the matter?

All this talk about categories of "genetics" as if you care about genetics.

At the heart of it, you are correct that genetics is not the top of my concern. The biggest thing I would like to see in competitive sports is fair play. As I have already mentioned in post #68 though, for better or for worse, society has chosen "gender" to be the deciding factor in how we separate athletes into different categories to ensure fair play, and the presence of what chromosomes pair a person has is the implicitly understood reason on how athletes are categorized.

It is not a perfect system, but no system ever is. Just because you do not think the condition is something to be concerned about does not determine whether the condition is actually something to be concerned about. Citing how Khelif is not undefeatable has no bearing on whether the condition provides an athletic advantage over competitors who do not have that condition. The single most important criteria is whether Khelif has the DSD condition or not, but nobody knows the answer to that.

FYI, there is a real debate behind DSD athletes and the requirements they have been made to comply with in order to compete as well. The World Athletics Council sees it as an important enough condition to put a rule in place to limit blood testosterone level for DSD athletes. Meanwhile, Olympic champion runner Caster Semenya is a DSD athlete, and has taken the competition requirements to the European Court of Human Rights on the basis of discrimination against athletes with her condition. So it isn't just some boomer nonsense.

It's a point without any basis, except from a dubious blood test from a disgraced former boxing organization that has been dropped by the IOC and then moved to disgraced country Russia from Switzerland..

Fuck it’s incredible when athletes are cocky or confident and they actually step up and perform. Lyles what an incredible race.

Was saying to my wife that like the Olympics in a lot of ways show how crazy F1 is. So of course like a swimmer, or a track athlete, etc. they compete quite a bit outside of the Olympics but a gold medal is the ultimate prize. It might be only one time in those 4 years you even get a shot and if the stars don’t align perfectly you miss your chance. Could be anything, jet lag, didn’t eat right, didn’t sleep, just didn’t have it

F1 drivers have to literally be at their peak performance 1000% concentration once a week in a different time zone, potentially across the globe, for up to 2 hours or more, 24 times a year.

If you’ve ever ridden a motor cycle I find that is the only thing I can think of that is basically requiring your full attention 99% of the time.

I watched women's breakdancing last night, and it was pretty entertaining. Especially the music.

The field was VERY uneven though. Some great bgirls but also some that you wonder how they qualified. For me Logistix from the US was the best at going WITH the music, and also had power moves and represented what was actually happening the best. But she was against most of the power move bgirls in the round robin, and that's really what the judges were rating the highest.

Ami from Japan was the next best for me, and she won the gold. The Lithuanian girl had the best power moves and she won the silver.

On the low end you had these Moroccan and Portuguese bgirls who moved great but had no power moves to show, so would get wiped in all their rounds.

Then there was the Australian who you wonder how she even qualified. She apparently holds a doctorate in this stuff and researches breakdancing. Okay but that doesn't mean you can actually dance.

Then there was the Australian who you wonder how she even qualified. She apparently holds a doctorate in this stuff and researches breakdancing. Okay but that doesn't mean you can actually dance.

i don't get why KD is so salty on twitter for people supporting serbia/dokic and giving praise for making it close. he thinks somehow praising someone else is disrespecting him :lol

100 percent. Durant is Team USA’s cupcake/snowflake. :lawl:

That breakdancing is ridiculous to watch, thank god they're taking it out in 2028.

Grand opening, grand closing.

It's not a damn sport, considering they were going to take wrestling out a while back.

I really liked it. If you like power moves, watch the men's competition

Lots of Olympic sports are basically forms of athletic dance, so I don't get the backlash

Fifth straight Olympic gold medal for USA in men’s basketball.

Dream Team is just too much for France.

Steph Curry went into beast mode in the gold medal game. Eight 3 pointers for Chef Curry in the gold medal game.

Curry also made 8 three pointers in the semi final game against Serbia.

When the game was still close, USA coaches just put LeBron and Curry in pick and roll plays to open up the floor for Curry to shoot 3s.

Kudos to Anthony Davis and KD for also playing a strong game.

Curry made a big 3 from well beyond the 3 point arc in the last minute of the game. Double team from France on Curry cannot defend that shot. WOW!

Best shooter ever in basketball.
Check out these stats for Curry:

Curry gave those French players nightmares after making his 8 three pointers haha.

The four 3s in the final minutes of the game were daggers.

Good night!

Mission accomplished for Tom Cruise and the Olympic closing ceremony.

-always a flair for the dramatic when you have Cruise and his stunts. Hollywood haha.

That moment when that woman who kissed Cruise at 5:37 of the video is gold hahah. -definitely not staged. Cruise looked surprised at the two kisses from that lady haha.

-good singing and guitar playing from Grammy winning artist H.E.R.

Olympics in LA. 2028!
