2025 Blue Jays
Have not followed the Jays in the off season.
I didn't even know there was a spring training game in Dunedin this morning.
Max Scherzer? When did that happen? Then, dare I say, Santander. Both free agent signings.
Did a quick search........ at least Springer is back. Looking forward to TD and Uncrustables commercials with Guerrero Jr.
Win or lose, Jays baseball is always relaxing and enjoyable to watch.
I see Buck is back........... always good to hear his voice and see the hair.
Hazel Mae looks like she's back. I hope that other hottie is back (can't remember her name).
I'm watching the game on PVR. All games now scheduled for recording.
BTW, how are the Canucks doing? I have yet to watch a single one of their games. I got in on the first page of the thread here on RS, just to get in, but not checking that anymore, either.

Vladdy gone yet?
Yes, Vladdy is back, for now.
The Jays are having a great Spring Training. Always hopeful they’ll have a decent season. I recently watched the Tokyo Series. Unlike the New York Yankees, the Dodgers are a very likeable team (at least for me). If the Jays ever played the Dodgers, I wouldn’t know who to cheer for, jbol. Ohtani, Teoscar Hernandez, Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts, Tommy Edman, Max Muncy, Miguel Rojas, etc. What really interested me was that young pitcher from Japan. Rōki Sasaki. Only 23 years of age. Throwing 102.5 mph fast ball. His debut MLB game was not great, but it was mostly due to playing for the first time in a Dodgers uniform in his home country. Anyway, going to follow both teams this season. PVR gonna get a work out. If interested, look up how the Dodgers ended up with Sasaki. Blue Jays involvement (sigh). https://www.foxsports.com/stories/mlb/we-were-when-no-one-was-how-dodgers-landed-japanese-phenom-roki-sasaki No guarantee this guy is going to be any good...................
Also, looking forward to the World Baseball Classic. Go, Canada, GO!!!

Fuck the Dodgers I hope any team but them win this year.
Fuck Vladdy too that guy ain't worth anywhere near 500+ million dollars this league is on crack if he gets that kind of money.

I used to be a big baseball guy in the 90’s playing it and watching it now it’s right next to golf on the least interesting to watch of all sports. I can’t understand how viewership is still so high and the salaries are so out of control.

-latest contract offer from the Jays to Guerrero:
MLB reporter Mike Rodriguez:
According to my sources, Toronto and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. are doing everything they can to reach an agreement before Opening Day. They were in discussions today, and my source says that they were talking about more than $550M for around 14 to 15 years. #Toronto #VladimirGuerreroJr
If Vlady accepts the contract extension offer, he would be the third highest paid player in MLB after Ohtani and Juan Soto.
Home and Season Opener about to start.
Four players honoured.............
Daulton Varsho = Gold Glove
Andrés Giménez = three time Golden Glove
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. = two time Silver Slugger
Anthony Santander = Silver Slugger
Oh yeah, Blue Jays defence - Team Golden Glove
Starting lineup is pretty impressive.
:
Damn, Ricky Henderson. Did not know he passed away. Sad.............
I'm super glad there wasn't any stupidity during the anthems. The announcer did a great job of explaining how sports and game of baseball has no place in politics and the other way around. Our anthem was nicely done. The smiles on the singers in the choir. Damn
KK back to throw the ceremonial pitch. 4 x Gold Glove and Platinum Glove recipient. Love the three outfielder jump........ brings tears to the eyes.
Berios His fifth straight season as starting pitcher. Too bad he has to face Adley Rutschman. Nemesis is an understatement.
Damn, Orioles are scarier than ever. Burnaby/Maple Ridge's Tyler O'Neill, that's with two "L's" is now an Oriole. Plays piano and like his father is into weights. In fact, his dad was Mr. Canada in 1975. What a gem of a player. Six consecutive opening day home runs, an MLB record.

Yes. PM me for pix. :hotbaby:
They had a few areas with Hello Kitty to take photos and they were handing out Hello Kitty x Toronto Blue Jays back packs for fans who purchased a special ticket, but no Hello Kitty walking around or anything of that sort. They have theme games that are posted on the Blue Jays website. I think the Hello Kitty thing happens once a year. Turns out they did this last year and was popular enough to do it again.

I want to go when it's Loonie Dog Night.
City Connect Friday is alright. People get free City Connect apparel on those nights.
8-3 loss, jbol. Rowdy Tellez, ftmfw!
Speaking of Hello Kitty games, LA Dodgers has the best.
Finally, got the monkey off their dicks.......... Blue Jays sweep the Mariners 3-0 with a 9-1 win.
Hasn't happened since July, 1991!
Good to see Jamie Campbell flip the broom across the Sportsnet broadcast desk. Only two times this year.
Before facing the Jays today, Seattle was the hottest team in baseball.
Not much to cheer about, as usual, so gettin' it in while I can, jbol.
Final regular season game, today. One win or a Yankees loss and the Blue Jays take the division title. Home field advantage and a bye from Wild Card series.
Wouldn't it be great if the Blue Jays win the World Series? Fuck Trump and the 51st State bullshit.
I've noticed some really really bad calls from the umps recently. Fuck the GOP, ijbol.
Vladdy Guerro Jr. "This is my house!!"
And, how about Kevin Kiermaier?
Loves singing Oh Canada.
https://www.mlb.com/news/kevin-kiermaier-blue-jays-special-assistant
Let's go, Blue Jays!
Cot Dam.............. Kirk hits a Grand Slam to give the Jays 5-1 lead at the bottom of the 1st inning. The guy is overweight and a slow runner, but holy smokes, he can hit. Reminds me of Babe Ruth (sort of). Body shaming has been all but a forgotten thing as his defensive play and now his offensive abilities has become a powerful asset for the team.
Just hope pitching doesn't crumble like they've done, many a times in the past.
And that Springer. Can't wait to see Bichette come back from his injury. And that new pitcher. It's all coming together!
They did it! They are American East Division Champions.
Home field advantage throughout the American League playoffs.
Could this be the year?
What a great post show interview............. Hazel wearing a really nice outfit. Perfect day for it with the roof open.
3 out of five series starts Saturday.
Looking beyond the east, the team that scares me the most are the Seattle Mariners. They are the one team that stands in our way. Good news is, we swept them in their park this year. Much improved lately, however, as in on a huge fricken tear.

Great pitching from Gausman in game 1.
Varland and Dominguez also pitched well.
The offence came up huge this game.
Alejandro Kirk’s game is red hot! Two home runs. Five home runs in his last five at bats.
Vlady with one home run and one RBI. Vlady
made a great catch at first base to make a double play out.
Nathan Lucas had three RBIs.
The Yankees bullpen is gonna have plenty of tired arms for game 2 haha.
Yesavage is pitching in game 2 tomorrow.

Not really a seasonsed baseball fan, only when the Jays are in the run but these relief pitchers that just pitch an inning or two ... surely, they have more left in their arm for another mid game relief of one or two innings, won't they? I know pitch counts is a factor but still, unless they go through the whole roster in one inning ...
I've always thought that baseball players are the 'softest' ... that's why they can play like 160 games.
MarkyMark
10-04-2025, 09:50 PM
Depends on the workload. If a guy pitches 2 innings he's probably not going to pitch the next day unless he had a lot of quick outs and kept his pitch count low. These guys are throwing hard and fatigue is a real thing, your arm can't recover fast enough after a certain amount of pitches the day before.
whitev70r
10-05-2025, 06:51 AM
So for starting pitchers who go for like about 4-5 innings (gone are the days when starting pitcher last 6, 7, 8, heaven forbid, 9 innings)... it's the 3-4 game rotation that saves their arm, 5-7 days in between to recover?
MarkyMark
10-05-2025, 07:57 AM
Yeah most of them pitch like every 5th game or so, keep in mind they are still working on their mechanics on their days off etc. they just aren't throwing 100%
mikemhg
10-05-2025, 10:00 AM
I'd suspect the kind of velocity they're throwing the ball at 95+MPH elicits microtears within the shoulder/rotator that requires that week to heal.
Imagine a QB having to play a game literally a day or two after the last game, that would be pretty tough at that level.
Trey Yesavage. This (today's game), will indicate if this youngster is for real.
Amazing, so far.
https://www.mlb.com/player/trey-yesavage-702056
Yesterday's game got a little scary, but they got out of it and started to rape the Yankees. Watching rerun clips of the Var Show. Damn.
How can anyone living in Canada not get behind this team? Two things that bring this country together. Trump and the Blue Jays.
Been a Blue Jays fan through thick and thin. Buck just said, "This team hasn't been given the credit it deserves for the season it's put together. And now people around the country are understanding how good they are. Dan adds, in The US as well. Not many know much about the Blue Jays. 5 gold glovers out in the field for the Jays today.
5-0 end of 4. Yesavage with 10 strike outs. Most teams have this projection machine that has stats on every pitcher in Major League baseball. Even puts pitcher up on a screen as the simulation pitch is thrown out. Nothing on Yesavage. One of the little pluses that has made a huge impact on this year's team. All planned, I'm sure.
Let's Go, Blue Jays!!!!
Grand Slam!!!!!!
I saw Guerrero nod his head like he knew something. I looked over at my Vladdy Bobblehead and I swear I saw it move, too. He knew what to expect. He's locked in.

Var Show again. Two homers and two doubles! So far.
That Home Run Jacket getting well worn these days. Imagine they stopped it last year and brought it back after lots of complaints. Barrio idea/concept. Started by the team interpreter, iirc. Sure beats Seattle's trident, the wheelbarrow, etc.
I'm so glad Buck is back and Rogers/Sportsnet having rights to show all Jays games. I remember the days of having to listen to subpar announcers from other carriers, who knew nothing about Canada.
Buck and the team are so knowledgeable. Baseball IQ, indeed. There are haters of Buck out there, but they have no idea what the hell they're talking about. You can't beat the experiences of Buck. His stories are pure gold. "Get up ball, get out of here!"
Also, think manager (John Schneider) is a great fit for the organization. I felt so badly for him last two years. Not fair what he had to go through the last few seasons. Glad they kept believing in him. Fun fact. He was a coach for the Vancouver Canadians.
Uh oh....... bases loaded for Yankees with Judge at plate. Nance............... 13-2 might not be enough.

Blue Jays win a playoff series for the first time since 2016.

I haven't followed baseball as closely as I used to in the past 10 years but seeing a bullpen day in an elimination match is really something I couldn't have imagined 30 years ago much less 5 years ago. Really shows how the game has changed.

Big mistake to put in Little.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Bringing in Little was a huge mistake. Losing this game was the worst thing. Mariners were stretched to the limit from that marathon of a game. Lose tomorrow with Yesavage and it’s basically over. Momentum is a bitch. If Blue Jays bats go silent, it’s series over, cause pitching is not good.

Terrible at bats from the Jays, didn't get anything going or show any kind of threat to come back in this game. Let's see what they do tomorrow.
As for Gausman being pulled, the coaches know better than anyone what is about to happen. We've seen it time and time again over the season. There are signs when Gausman is about to have a meltdown. It's always around the 5th or 6th inning. If they had kept him in, it might have turned out to be a 6-1 lead for the Mariners. Putting Little in baffles me, though. He has let the team down so many times in situations such as this. It was a gamble. A huge gamble. Tomorrow is probably going to be the biggest game so far for the Jays. At least get one win so they can come back after the three games in Seattle.

I didn't hate Gausman getting pulled, he was definitely losing it a bit that inning, but putting Little in was a mistake he regularly blows it so I don't know why they keep using him in tough situations. I'd keep Gausman in the game before going to Little.

Maybe ... but not likely. I'm shocked at how depleted the pitching roster is for the Jays and how with that, they made it this far !!!
Blue Jays hitting and fielding have been the biggest reasons for this year's success. Two good pitchers. That's it.
Just have to keep focused and not make mental errors. Errors are the Jays' worst enemy.

Wow, Scherzer has wild looking eyes!
ChatGPT:
Max Scherzer has a condition called heterochromia iridum, which means he has two different-colored eyes: a blue right eye and a brown left eye. This is a harmless genetic condition that causes the irises (the colored part of the eye) to have different colors, and Scherzer has embraced it throughout his career.

Anything can happen in today's game. Gausman needs to stay focused. I think Scherzer with his crazy antics yesterday, riled up the team. That body check to the pitching coach was priceless. Even better was Springer mimicking Scherzer's antics. Dude is so fricken funny.
You can't help but to love this team. Win or lose, this season has been a great ride. I've watched every game this season. Through thick and thin.

Good thing is Jays won 2 on the road last round in Seattle so they can win on the road. Let's take 2 in LA.
I've been following the Dodgers as much as I've been following the Jays this season. Not surprised by this game's result, one bit.
Next up, Scherzer vs Glasnow. Both pitchers can shit the bed. Bullpen on both sides are shitty. Dodgers' probably slightly shittier. Have no idea why Bieber is not in for game three. Maybe coaches and manager looking for a different matchup for games further down the road. Jays will face Yamamoto one more time, if the series goes all the way. He's human. Jays' hitters can get to him. Gotta get the pitch count high on him. Yesavage didn't perform his best in game one, but I think his next game would be better. What a series, though.

I think that the GM Schneider talked with his coaching staff about the option to walk Ohtani.
Ohtani is also a great base stealer besides his hitting power. He had 20 stolen bases during the regular season.
If they walk Ohtani, they also take the risk of putting a good base stealer on base with Mookie Betts and Freeman next at bat. Plenty of offence from Betts and Freeman.

Why did Schneider not intentionally walk Ohtani in the seventh inning?
-could have changed the outcome of the game.
Jays had opportunities to win this game for sure.
Players were left on base. Lack of power from hitters.
This loss is partly because of Schneider’s decisions. He pulled Barger and Bichette way too early from the game.

Why pull Barger for Straw at that point in the game? Maybe if we had the lead but with a tie game we needed his bat in extra innings especially without Springer and Bo.

100 percent. I agree that Schneider made some questionable decisions about the batting order.
They absolutely need Bo and Barger to be at bat now that Springer is injured.
Miles Straw? He was batting like he was holding a straw to try to hit a baseball.
I highly recommend a subscription to Sportsnet! :)

Maybe he's also involved in mafia run sports betting
Gotta keep putting Ohtani on, unless there's no base runners on board. Gotta stop putting batters from the bottom of the order on base for Ohtani to bring home. If Ohtani gets on, the next two to three batters are pretty scary in their own right. LA Dodgers are pretty solid. All you can hope for is an injury or fielding errors. And, take advantage of those errors.
Ohtani pitching today. He can fuck you up from both ends of play.
It's baseball.................anything can happen. Yesterday's game could have gone either way. Crazy game.
OMFG! Can they not find someone who can sing?
The chick who sang the Star Mangled Banner, however, did a fantastic job. Much power behind that voice. Plus, kind of hot............

Lots of fly balls right at the wall for the Dodgers, feels like some of these will start to go over.. Not feeling good about this pitcher! monkaS
Vladdy giving the Blue Jays management their money's worth.

He's coming off Tommy John surgery. He has what it takes. Pitching ain't easy at this level.
Yesavage used to be unhittable, but last game, he looked average at best. An off day. Ohtani looks hittable all of a sudden.

Go Jays! Get more hits! Get on base. Grind out these at bats against the Dodgers relief pitchers.
Darn it. Good double play from the Dodgers.

Vladdy put on base kind of backfired for LA. 5-1
Kirk needs to hit one out.

Yup, get starter out of the game and bullpen, which has not been great this year, will give you mucho opportunities.
Bassitt???
He did pitch well last night. Schneider has to pull him asap if he shows any sign of control issues. 'cept he has to face three batters. wait, nvm
They finally gave up on Pages and put in Call.
Now the big test. Bassitt vs Ohtani.
Interesting. Bassitt not strutting off after retiring the side. Maybe he learned some humility being semi-demoted to the bull pen.

I was going to ask how Ohtani is still in the game, and they said he's a DH now? I haven't watched ball in a long time and I don't recall that rule

Yeah, if you're a pitcher and you are relieved, you can still hit as a DH.
It's as if the rule was custom tailored for Ohtani.
Damn........ just looked it up
Before the universal DH (1973–2021)
The designated hitter rule was adopted by the American League (AL) in 1973, but the National League (NL) did not adopt it until 2022. During this period, the rules for pitchers depended on the league of the home team.
Pitcher batting: In National League parks and World Series games played at NL parks, pitchers were required to bat unless a pinch-hitter was used.
DH and substitutions: In American League parks, the designated hitter would bat in place of the pitcher. If a team used a DH, the pitcher was not in the batting lineup.
Loss of DH: An American League team would lose its DH for the rest of the game if the designated hitter was moved to a defensive position, or if a pitcher moved from the mound to another position on defense.
The "Ohtani rule" (2022–present)
In 2022, Major League Baseball adopted the universal designated hitter, standardizing the rule across both the American and National Leagues. At the same time, MLB created a new rule to accommodate two-way players like Shohei Ohtani.
New DH flexibility: A starting pitcher who also begins the game as the designated hitter can continue to bat as the DH even after they are removed from the game as a pitcher. This was a significant shift, as the previous rule would have forced the team to forfeit the DH position.
Purpose of the change: This new rule lets a two-way player contribute their offensive skills for the entire game without the team losing the DH when a relief pitcher is brought in. It only applies to the starting pitcher, not relief pitchers.
Practical effect: Now, a team with a two-way star can list that player on the lineup card as a "pitcher/designated hitter." Once the pitcher is relieved, the player simply remains in the game as the DH.
Examples of historic rulings
Early DH tests: The idea of a designated hitter dates back to the 1890s, when William Chase Temple proposed it, but it was voted down. It wasn't until a period of low offense in the 1960s that the idea gained serious traction again.
The phantom DH: In the early days of the DH, Orioles manager Earl Weaver exploited a loophole by listing a non-playing pitcher as the "phantom DH." This allowed him to use any available pinch-hitter later in the game. The league closed this loophole in 1980 by requiring the DH to bat at least once before being substituted.
Shohei Ohtani's early starts: Before the "Ohtani rule" was implemented, if Ohtani was pitching for the Angels, the team had to choose between letting him hit for himself or using a designated hitter. If they chose the former, they would lose the DH once he was replaced on the mound, a potential disadvantage. In 2021, on multiple occasions, Ohtani was listed in the starting lineup as a pitcher and a hitter, forcing his team to forgo the DH and giving them less offensive flexibility.

Crazy to think short of a collapse in the next two innings, Blue Jays could be up 3-1 in the series if it wasn't for the miscommunication last night with the umpire, Varsho and Bichette.

Hard to complain about getting more Ohtani... Unless you're the Blue Jays! LUL
Damn, we are very fortunate to have such great coverage of the games. Like I said earlier, I'm on r/Dodgers. They're asking how they can view Sportsnet coverage. Buck, Dan, and Hazel. nuff said.
The experience of Buck. You learn more than just baseball history but much insight.
I think Bassitt is best used in the bull pen. Wow!
At his age and coming off an injury, he might fizzle his career out in the bullpen haha
He's been an awesome starter for the Jays
Lol........ Vladdy being a social butterfly. Chatting it up with Mookie Betts. One of the reasons why Vladdy has supporters and is respected by both players and fans around the league. When you see opposing player being all friendly and whatnot, you start to see the magic between great players. Earlier, watching Vladdy and Teoscar at first base chatting it up and smiling was so heartwarming. The best of friends.
That long ass game last night might be taking its toll.
Put Little in there............. okay, that's not funny.
Hoffman will git 'er done.
Take this game, Yesavage in tomorrow and win the World Series at home.
Vladdy, "THIS IS OUR HOUSE!"
Great call....................... purposely putting runner on third base. Erasing any chance of relaying pitches.
SERIES TIED!!!!
PHEW, only needed one game to determine the winner LOL
