So in Jan of this year, i picked up the cheapest mirrorless camera on the market. I got an entry level r50 canon with the crappy kit lens of 18-45 for 1k.

I always wanted a real camera camera as i saw what Donk/GS8 could do with theirs when it came to car photography. Ive also had a passion for imagining since i was a kid i enjoyed play around with those instant cameras and Polaroids.

So i totally went down a rabbit hole on youtube/books/google researching the shit out of the exposure triangle, f stops, bokeh, etc etc. $4000 bucks later, ive completed my camera bag and ive picked up a 100-400mm (5.6-8), 18-50 (2.8 constant) and a 10-18 (2.8 constant). Along with a travel sirui tripod, ND/Polarizing/UV filters and a peak design strap because im a retard a 100 dollar straps make sense in the camera world.

I hate fucking birds. But there isnt much else to take photos of in Richmond. I was thinking of doing some street photography in Richmond but my cheapie camera isnt weather sealed. In hindsight i wish i would have not bought such an entry-level camera and instead gotten a weather sealed and internally stabilized camera body so i could run lower ISO and faster shutter for low light. Still happy with the APSC crop factor though, i dont think going full frame would be that much help. Also really enjoy the small / light R50 vs a full frame camera.

Next step is to actually go hiking, and climb a lousy mountain so i can get some real landscape shots. Im going to Lighthouse park on friday to shoot, weather be damned. Also looking forward to taking a trip this summer to banff or calgary and shoot some wildlife along the way.

I'm no photography expert, but those are great photos to a casual viewer like me. I also fully expect you to be amongst the ah baks doing photography by Iona Beach in the near future :lol

I went down a similar rabbit hole right before COVID with a full-frame camera, which only intensified once lockdown happened (GAS syndrome). Like you, I was also shooting birds and cars.

Please make sure you protect your camera + lenses if it's raining!

Bird Photography is a dangerous hobby. I had a friend who started like you. Next thing I knew was him dropping 20k on a 600mm telephoto bazooka. “I can’t get close enough to the birds”. And yes, he doesn’t like birds either.

I mean I rather shoot naked blondes like heff did, but those days are gone.

Birds are really not my thing, every time I shoot one I kinda wanna see it fried in oil and served to me by the chicken lady. Makes me hungry looking at that eagle. I’m sure it fries up nicely. Wonder if it’s a white meat.

I got the wife involved too. She’s trying to out do me and she says I take lame photos.

i gotta say she’s pretty good. Due to her height (lack of) she gets some interesting perspectives. She also has this weird disney-esq bond with tiny woodland creatures. Bunnies, squirrels, etc.

She got these amazing squirrel shots.

Hobz, have you thought about doing night time photography? Taking pictures of the moon during an eclipse on a clear night? Photos of stars and meteor showers?

There is a "blood moon" lunar eclipse on this Friday night starting at 11:30pm. Unfortunately, all the crappy weather of rainy clouds might block the eclipse.

I saw many photographers last year in May in Vancouver at Kits beach take pictures of the Northern Lights.

I've heard this quite a bit, even people who were in the hobby more when they were younger, who you would think would take pictures of their kids and stuff, just said carrying the camera in addition to everything else is too tough, especially when your smartphone takes such damn good pictures to begin with.

This is basically me with my FF camera gear - I sold it all last year and downsized to a simple Fujifilm setup. Otherwise the smartphone camera takes care of my photo needs - I'm more than happy to sacrifice absolute image quality & camera control for readiness to capture the moment with my smartphone.

I miss taking my camera out. Much like most people who enjoy it but never got serious, it just feels like the phones are close to doing what I could with a camera 99% of the time.
But those shots where you nail it, a phone can't come close. It's such a great feeling, and the part I liked most about it was it's just an excuse to go somewhere.

But you need a big, high-resolution screen to really see all the incredible detail. I can't even imagine what a cutting-edge camera can do, especially viewed on something like a 70" 8k screen.

I think a ton depends on skill too. Like some of the best shots I've taken where I've actually post processed and shit I can see a difference a lot, but those aren't the norm for me. I understand aperature and shutter speed and such well, but I think my composition often sucks, so there's lots I take where I'm just like, oh. That's it?
Those shots above you took are rad as they have a consistent feel to them. I feel like I haven't got that in my shots yet. Like I don't have a style really.
I have a Nikon d2500 and a couple lenses. The equipment is good enough but the operator needs work. That said I know I just need to go shoot again. It's always fun, but time is tight, and feels like it's a little bit down the list of hobby priorities.

I once got half into photography before realizing I have absolutely no eye for composition which made the rest of it kind of feel like a waste of time. Very rarely I'll luck into a decent photo where I think it would've been neat to have shot it with proper equipment but they're so few and far between it's not worth it lol.

nope. juvenile baldy. I was at New Brighton Park and this guy starts flipping small stones and sticks along the small tidal beach and starts catching these shrimp/prawn critters. barely 20 meters away, probably too young to know better.

So my whole philosophy for the gear was to make it light and portable. I was gonna just buy a rx100 and take that for vacations but I figure an interchangeable lens system has more flexibility. Of course there is gonna be trade offs, no way will it ever get those tact sharp images like skinny pup or nvm or ray ray. But it’s so dsmn small with a 18-50 that I’m pretty sure it’s perfect for travel.

I’ll know in a week. I’m heading to Australia for about 3 weeks. Brisbane, Gold Coast, Perth and Melbourne.

One of my cousins is an avid photographer. Although he mainly takes portrait photographs for weddings as a side hustle, he is thinking of doing more outdoor photography of wildlife.

He mentioned the telephoto lenses that are sold at Broadway Camera.

For example, Over $25,000 for the Canon RF 1200mm F8 L. The bazooka hahaha.
The specs on the RF F8L are impressive.
A light super telephoto lenses at 7.8 pounds.

Hobbies are expensive.

Watches, cars, biking, computers.

I have a friend who's into running. He goes through 2-3 pairs of shoes a year just running @ ~200/pair. For his marathons he wears his more expensive shoes at 5-600/pair as they provide more performance. Yeah you'd have thought running was cheap.....

We've managed as a species to make the last free thing on the planet (running) prohibitively expensive haha.

I spent 6 months riding around urban Tokyo on a 30 or 40 year old barely working road bike, and I made some memories that will stay with me all my life. I get the appeal of buying cool gadgets and stuff, but it's not that necessary to enjoy the hobby itself.

$500 shoes seems insane to me lol

underscore
03-15-2025, 08:04 PM
A lot of hobbies can be done fairly cheaply, people just choose to spend a lot of money on them sometimes.

Although in terms of $ spent per hour of hobby time those $200 pairs of shoes for running probably aren't too bad.

Happiest days of my photo days were shooting manual lenses with d3100. D3100 cant read aperture data from manual lenses so it was full manual mode. I then got d300 which could and eventually moved to FF and the automation turned me off.

But it’s so dsmn small with a 18-50 that I’m pretty sure it’s perfect for travel.

i took my Rx-100 v3 to Mexico last month. haven't used it in years. great little camera.

He looked at me, i looked at him, and it turned into that YOU CALL THIS A KNIFE!?!?! situation....

anyways i ran away... eruhh slowly (cuz i cant run that fast) a few meters away from him. Then i catch him in the corner of my eye sitting on the ground and propping the penis lens up with his knee. I guess that setup is really heavy.

Pretty sure his picture will show up in richmond news shortly.

I've never seen a coyote with such a nice coat! Every single one that I've come across in person is a slim or shaggy looking thing, with a face that looks a lot less wolf-like.

Mind you, they cross breed enough that all coyotes have some wolf genes in them anyway. (Plus a tiny bit of dog genes as well)

Sea otters? I found this info. on Reddit:

https://www.reddit.com/r/vancouver/comments/qbp66e/is_there_a_place_where_i_can_see_wild_sea_otters/?rdt=64464

I've seen a family of river otters between the community gardens and nearby pedestrian bridge of Colony Farm Park. A regular park visitor told me that he often sees them on the east side of the bridge, in the wide ditches.

Maybe also try Lighthouse Park in West Van to see if there are otters there.

Any place that has man made rock embankments that goes into the ocean would be a place to find river otters.

Marine biologists call them river otters because this kind of otter is the more common sighting in the GVRD.

Sea Otters? You'll need travel to Vancouver island.

I saw river otters at the Minnekhada Park in Coquitlam last year in the big pond area. Watch out for a bear near that pond too!

We go to a cabin near Logan lake and one day I was laying on the dock and heard all this squeaking under it. I look through the deck boards and there’s a set of eyes looking back up at me like wtf?! What is that

I stand up and a mother otter and a few little babies swim away like they would at the aquarium looking back up at me from underwater. Fucking bizarre fresh water otters in the middle of nowhere near Kamloops. Been going there for 30+ years and never once seen an otter so I’ve gotta wonder if someone brought them there. Although fresh water otters do exist I have no clue how they would have got there. It’s basically as high up as you can get with no rivers or streams that really feed into it

But diving with sea lions and they coming up at your is another thing.
This was me at Race Rocks in Victoria... They younger sea lions are playful and will try to nibble at your fins ...

I drove 9h+ yesterday from Melbourne all along this great ocean road toward the 12 apostles. It’s a helluva of a drive with 180 degree hairpins. Not good for my body on frame truck (ford Everest) that I rented.

I wouldn’t really recommend this ocean road drive. The road surface is super bumpy and the views are more epic on the Oregon coast

I guess the takeaway is that compromising on car rentals for vacation isn't worth it for nitpicking enthusiasts like us.

That's a heck of a lot of time and money spent on a trip out to Australia for Hobz not to enjoy the twisties the way Roast got to.

To this day I still regret that I had to turn around on the F-road up to Þórsmörk (Thor's Valley), on a trip to Iceland. Just because we had a Kia Sportage (which to be fair, was actually pretty excellent for every other of the 8 days we spent driving Ring Road). Which had not-great ground clearance and was getting too sketchy. So much so that I can't shake the feeling I have to go back one day. Just to do it right :/.

roastpuff
03-26-2025, 03:44 PM
I mean, I think I got a smoking deal for my Polestar 2 - I paid $250 for the 5 days, and charging for 1200km cost me roughly 87CAD. Gas car would've cost me twice that in gas alone.

Good to know EV rentals are still very affordable in Australia.

I did the same GOR stretch in a diesel Staria - it didn't have power but everyone was going slow anyway, so more power would've made no difference.

^It’s all pretty worthless to be honest hahaha

I’m getting so fucking fat eating this great food here. I’m in Perth right now and it’s not as good as Melbourne for food but I can see myself living here in OZ. The meat is super fresh because it’s all grass fed. The seafood is out of this world, especially that coral trout that you can only get on that side of the pacific. It’s all relatively expensive but you don’t need to tip so that sort of balances out.

seems like a lot of natives are eating out at the same places we are, so i dont think its anything special to spend this kind of money. The waiters are getting 26+ dollars an hour here so i think they are doing okay.

I mean its relatively the same prices as what we are doing in vancouver. I dont think i can spend less than 60-80 dollars for brunch in vancouver. Cactus club for me and the wife is often 150+ and its nothing special so its standard affair

Even a big mac is 9 dollars here for just the burger.

Probably depressed.

I think the fuckers here had their brains melted by the constant sun.

The road network was designed by a British meth head. The usage of insane round abouts, abrupt lane closure and ridiculous speed limit signs (like it’ll show 80kph limit and 100m later it’ll show a corner for 20kph) makes absolutely no sense. How about merge 5 lanes into 2 for no reason and then open back up to 4 lanes just for lawls.

That’s what you get when using penal labor. The term slack jawed yoko applies so well to these people. It’s water. It has a T in it. Why the fuck do you pronounce it wahdur?!? Yeeehh nuuhhhh, all these blondes are great to look at but as soon as they open their mouth I wanna shove my dick in it just to prevent their stupid “language” from escaping.

Badhobz
05-04-2025, 02:48 PM

The dark spots in that first pic is sensor dust, the dust on a lens won't show up in photos unless its like glare from direct light. Take a shot of a bright white wall or something, at f16 or higher, swap lenses and do it again. All those dark spots will stay in the same position

I saw an article probably 20 years ago with photos taken through a 50mm lens that had the front element destroyed, looked like a spider web it was cracked so many times, and as long as there wasn't direct light on the element you could barely tell in photos. Changed how I felt about dust in the lens after that.

This is similar, but less cracked

Great countr(ies)...nice scenery, good food if a bit repetitive, chill laid back vibe, not a lot of wild animals/birds to shoot but sure as hell a lot of livestock and domesticated animals. damn son! what kinda camera is that!??! macro shots are amazing.

It’s an entry-level Fujifilm X-T30 II paired with the 70-300mm lens that’s doing the heavy lifting. I picked up the lens recently and have been really enjoying the shots I can get with it.

i had a copper wind chime on my deck, and some wasps made a home in it. i tried to take pics with my macro set up, but damn it was hard, couldn't get my eye under there, it wasn't a flip screen camera. so i attached a monitor to see what the hell i was doing, and could actually focus on the little bastards.

i havent tried micro 4/3 but this guy at work swears by them. The extra crop is basically having 2x the zoom. so your 100-400 is 200-800! and thats pretty sick.

And the body is generally lighter so its easier to carry around/travel with. The only downsides ive heard is that the dynamic range is less than APSC which is less than full frame.

But you can recover those buy shooting in raw and using lightroom/photo editior to touchup.

Try a nicer lens to start - maybe something like an Olympus 12-40 f/2.8 Pro lens on Marketplace. They go for ~$500-750 from what I'm seeing and much cheaper than $1050+tax new.

thats why ive read that you should always invest in lenses and not so much in camera bodys. They lose value the quickest, but lenses, especially good and fast lenses, you'll get 70-80% of your money back when you sell it vs only 50% on the camera body.

Any of these modern day mirrorless cameras are quite amazing.

Go grab a Sony one if you want the most lenses and aftermarket support

Go grab a canon one if you like their "color science" but most colors can be changed in post processing

Go grab a nikon if you shoot a lot of wildlife and need the best weather sealing

Go grab a leica if youre some sort of a image conscience weirdo who prefers to pay 5x more for their bodys just to say OHHH I SHOOT WITH A LEICA and get indistinguishable results from any other camera makers. P.s. get a Panasonic thats 1/4 the price and uses Leica mount and lenses.

Also fujifilm X mounts are pretty amazing as you get a lot of variety for lenses and their built in filters are pretty interesting.

I went down a rabbit hole with these cameras and im glad i went with a R50 Canon. its entry level APSC but its good enough for what i need. I might upgrade for that R7 MKII when it comes out later this year because i think weather sealing and the bump up in megapixels would help (only really in wildlife shots).

Otherwise functionalities that ive found that i want/like:
1) more reach with the APSC / Micro 4/3 is really nice if youre doing wildlife.
2) weather sealing (be careful that the lens might NOT be weather sealed if you buy a cheap lens)
3) IBIS (in body image stabilization, you mix that with optical lens stabilization and you can do some really nice night shots without blur).
4) light weight and proper ergonomics. This wears on you quite a bit if youre traveling. I went hiking to this waterfall in australia with 3 lenses, a tripod, and my camera and it was 15lbs of weight on my back.

Full frame cameras can crop down to APS-C as well for that 1.6x multiplier, so FF > APS-C IMO.

I switch my Canon RP from FF to 1.6x crop depending on situation and if I want the extra reach.

true, but you lose megapixels. Say for example your full frame camera is 45mega pixel like the canon r5. you're limited to 17 megapixels when you go into APSC crop mode. While if you buy a R7 (apsc camera) youre getting a full 32 megapixel.

Does that matter? sort of.... if you do any cropping on top of that.

The Olympus 12-40mm is equivalent to a 24-80mm range on a full-frame camera, good for a wide range of everyday uses that you'd use a cellphone camera for. Think landscapes on the wider end, and portraits on the longer end, and street photography, food/product, and everyday + family photos in between. If your phone has multiple lenses, then it likely covers a similar range.

If you're happy with your phone images and want to find a purpose for your camera, consider a telephoto lens (i.e. Olympus 40-150mm - $200 new and slightly less for used) to reach ranges that your phone cannot touch right now. That way you can use your phone for everyday shots and your camera for more reach. The 40-150mm is equivalent to 80-300mm on a full frame camera, great for doing wildlife photography and the types of shots Hobz is sharing here.

don't sleep on older cameras, they are still really good even if they arent as cool as the latest and greatest fujis or whatever.
i bought a used canon t6i last week with an 18-135mm IS for dirt cheap. cameras in the last 10 years or so are all really good.
once the iso became usable past 1600 unlike the first generation of DSLRs, they all became very decent at low light photos even with kit lenses.
if your goal is just general photography and nothing super specific, you can't really go wrong with literally any system in the past decade as long as you get a decent deal on it.

Superb optical performance

...most impressive feats of NIKKOR engineering yet—the remarkable full frame AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR...

The AF-S NIKKOR 800mm f/5.6E FL ED VR is a marvel of NIKKOR optical design. The lens is comprised of 20 elements split into 13 lens groups. The front and second elements are fluorite (a lightweight mono-crystal optical material), which provides superior optical characteristics and reduced weight for balanced handling. Two Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements provide superior sharpness and colour correction by minimizing chromatic aberration, and Nano Crystal Coat (N) reduces ghosting and lens flare throughout the visible spectrum.

Lazy fucks are lazy! :alonehappy: plus zooms are so good nowadays the benefits of a so called “fast prime” are minimal if any.

Look at my 10-18 or 18-50. Both cost me around 1k each.

How much is a 2.8 50mm prime? Or a 35mm 2.8 prime? Even an 1.8 prime or an L lens 1.4. Can you really tell the difference on the same body? Probably not and even if there is a slight improvement is it worth spending that kind of cash and not have the flexibility?

I just wanted to circle back to this. Be very carefully Hobz... because the second most expensive thing in lenses after the reach is the bokeh!!

This is the one hobby I spent more money than what I'd like to admit to my wife. I probably own like 30 different 50-60mm lenses for my hunger for bokeh.

After wife realized how much my lenses were worth as I took out a separate insurance policy for them (home insurance only covers up to $3000 per item), she asked "in the era of Photoshop, can you just photoshop those bukeh or whatever in instead of spending thousands on your lenses?"

Me: unlike you guys with your iPhones and apps, I spend thousands so I can shoot without photoshopping :fuckyea:

I'm absolutely obsessed with fore/background blur or bokeh. It's the subtle difference in how the lens draw them that excites me. It's really about what's out of focus rather than what's in focus.
