So yesterday my buddy texts me a picture, to reveal that my (and probably yours too!) all-time favorite sushi joint in the entire world is gone.

Except actually they've just renamed themselves, to Kamura.

Turns out "Kamura" is a Filipino word. For inexpensive (for also "expletive", apparently :lol).

Anyway I thought that was great, that they've now fully embraced the reason that they are so good. Great quality, greater quantity, at fantastic prices, run by Filipinos who are the secret to excellent everything.

I know the Cambie location is the OG store, but I go to the Fraser / 49th area often enough to know that the Sumari location there is still Samurai.

Will report back the next time I'm in that area on whether it is still Samurai.

The same big-eyed lady that's been there forever is still there doing cash, along with probably the same crew making the sushi.

Portions are the same, though prices have gone up. Nothing's changed besides the new name and no dine-in since covid. Maki B Combo is my guilty pleasure - the portions stretched my meal budget during my high school / uni days.

ok no matter how much i wanted to save money and get good value for money when eating out when i was younger, i couldnt do this place more than a few times. the balance of fish and rice is actually unappetizing... like a whole mouth full of tuna and you've only had one bite. also they don't know how to thaw fish properly and it's often semi frozen inside

Or when Poke Bowls were the craze 10 years ago, I created my own version using the Maki Combo B as a base, unrolled everything, and mixed in some ponzu sauce. It wasn't quite as decadent as going to Pokeritto, but it satisfied my broke-ass uni self.

This one time, I brought a box of Samurai Sushi over to my parents and they just kind of looked at it like "What do we do with this? It's RAW!".

So my mom steamed it. And it was really good. Hot toro nigiri: you should all give that a try. Super juicy full of flavor.

Don't air fry sushi though. It is no good.
