So replacement bz4x?

-looks like the 2026 CH-R is not a replacement for the bz4x.
-more like a more affordable sibling of the 2026 bZ.

https://www.toyota.ca/en/register-for-bz-updates/

It's a slightly smaller version of the bZ4X, which is now just called the bZ.

RabidRat
05-14-2025, 02:04 PM
Wow, it totally does have all the same sheetmetal and interior as the bZ.

It's surprising how much better this looks just by dropping all the stupid black cladding and weird swoopy "future car" details around the head/tail lights.

Did Toyota actually mention this would be cheaper than the bZ though? It just looks like a coupified bZ, which should make it more expensive.

^I think Toyota would do pretty well adding the same EV powertrain to the Crown Sport and targeting the Venza / Crown Signia segment.

The only redeeming feature I see is that it has lots of physical buttons, but it looks like a bunch of the HVAC is still touchscreen. Every time I drive through Chilliwack I'd be accidentally setting the fan to max or turning the AC off trying to hit the recirc button.

Why is it a steering square?

Those phones are gonna go flying.

They'll be fine, we all know nobody will be doing anything dynamic enough in this thing to make them move.

Could be that the square helps with gauge cluster visibility.

But then they couldn't square off the top leaving the bottom a circle, so now it's both lol

Turns out these are expected to arrive in April.

Pricing turned out ok. I put a [refundable] deposit down on an orange GT: the crippling boredom of my Highlander is doing things to my brain.

Subaru gives you a $750 rebate if you're willing to go do a triathlon, even a small one. Also hoping I can haggle them down below $50k for the new $5k EV rebate.

2026 Subaru Uncharted FWD
$42,995
2026 Subaru Uncharted FWD LR
$46,995
2026 Subaru Uncharted SPORT AWD
$49,995
2026 Subaru Uncharted GT AWD
$51,995

It's really grown on me! I like the stubby fastback look. It's like a squished Camaro.

What if you just sign up for one? do they need to see the result?

Since the rebate is from the manufacture (not dealer level), just ask the sales what he needs to get Subaru Canada to give the rebate. The dealer will do this all day, after all the $750 is not coming out of their pocket, and if it is something that can help secure another sale, why not....

Unfortunately the Subaru website says you have to show your finish time so you really do have to do it. ><

Fml the shortest triathlon I found:
375m Swim, 10km Bike, 2.5km Run

375m is like 14 laps of a pool lolol

The Uncharted is really growing on me. Not enough to put a deposit down yet, but might tip me over if they offer low lease rates and decent discounts like they're offering for the Solterra right now.

The FWD models qualify for the new federal rebate, though a FWD Subaru feels wrong.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SS-RoyS7Ek
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOP2-fn-azw

The C-HR isn't half bad either, but I expect their lease rates to be far worse based on how the BZ is priced next to the Solterra. Plus I heard the C-HR will be a low-volume model for Canada which might float the higher prices for a bit.

In case you guys aren't aware, the cost to register for Ironman in Canada using the Ottawa event as an example ranges from CAD$1,299.01 to CAD$3,078.58, depending on the entry type. That's a deep expense for a $750 savings. I'm loving this Revscene math right here.

That's only "free" if you're a participant in a relay triathlon. Your team (via the captain) would still have to pay up.

Sprint Relay Triathlon (Team Captain)
750m Swim, 29km Bike, 5km Run - June 7, 2026
$187.42

Also 750m swim, are you trying to get me killed?!

But lets be real. Milton. C'mon now.

Gotta ask, why this thing instead of a Mach-E GT/Rally , Ioniq 5 XRT/N, or Rivian R2?

RabidRat
02-13-2026, 09:27 AM
Gotta ask, why this thing

340hp AWD for $52k to me is a bargain, and I like the idea of putting that kind of power in a tiny package.

Like a bunch of you guys on RS, I've had good times with my S2000. Over 17 years, I liked the challenge of stuffing all kinds of things into that car and getting away with it. Hauling stuff down the highway, through downtown traffic, things sticking way up through the open top: tall packages, giant stuffies, office chairs, you name it.

instead of a Mach-E GT/Rally

I've had the Mach-E as a rental twice, and in both times I had issues with the electronic door popper lagging / not responding.

Wasn't a fan of the low-speed throttle calibration. Felt jumpy.

Felt slow (AWD, but not GT/Rally). Back end rotates, but unpredictably so.

Fiddly UI. Felt a little distracting flipping around through menus to adjust things while I was driving.

, Ioniq 5 XRT/N,

I've had maybe 5 or 6 Ioniq5 rentals. Love the look of these from the outside, but I don't like the bubbly looking interior. The switchgear and general user interfacing has felt unintuitive, even despite using it a bunch of times.

I could've begrudgingly overlooked all that for the N, but you can't get one with a panoramic moonroof. I emailed Hyundai Canada with a plea: no reply lol.

or Rivian R2?

Oh yeah, I'd much rather an R2 as a vehicle. I have a day-1 [refundable] deposit down on one as well.

I just don't know that it'd be the responsible thing to do. In my first year of ownership, I built a spreadsheet for the R1 tracking 30+ issues, 20 of them being repeats / new problems caused by attempted fixes of the original issues.

In the delivery room at the hospital, with our newborn baby next to me, I was on the phone with Rivian arguing that they should pay for the damage to my truck because the tow operator dented it in transit. (why did they have to tow in the first place? because of an amateur-hour 12V electrical architecture + a bug-ridden firmware update = bricked, that's why)

But they argued that it was a 3rd party so it's out of their hands wtf. And then they refused to discuss further, so then I had to go find them on LinkedIn to get ahold of them.

...still loved that truck: it was like magic when it worked. Still might wind up in an R2, because I've learned nothing :lol

The part I'm really worried about is the swim. 375 m is 15 lengths of a pool. That's not totally crazy, but I haven't swum (swimmed? swam?) laps since elementary school either haha.

Also at a triathlon, you're swimming in open water with rolling waves, water currents, and people swimming all around you kicking and jabbing. I heard that makes it way harder.

This is probably the stroke I should learn to master: flip onto my back and just flounder slowly to the finish :lol.

Trailseeker:

Uncharted:

Technically the FWD Uncharted trims would qualify for the federal rebate according to Subaru's configurator, though the FWD LR barely squeezes by at $49,811 before taxes.

Geez they should've just popped the EV drivetrain into an existing ICE vehicle then. Why all the bespoke bodywork and interior when they could've just changed the drivetrain into the RAV4 and Highlander, and called it a day.

With all the development savings they could've sold the vehicle at a lower price.

^It was trendy at the time, and I'm guessing they don't want to jeopardize the ICE models' brand equity. Remember, the pre-facelift Bz4X was inferior to their EV competitors by a good gap, and these facelifted bZ close the gap quite a bit.

Mercedes did something similar by separating their traditional ICE models with an EQ lineup of EVs, but is now introducing new traditional models with EV powertrains (CLA, GLC etc.). Toyota is also starting to do the same with the new Highlander EV.

CLA guys worked magic - the EV stuff is a bolt on to the ICE platform AND its frunk and battery are bigger than Ioniq.
For CLA, Trade off is in battery size, CLA has 92kwh battery which is 20kWh less than iX3 which is on dedicated EV platform.

CLA is most similar to 2026 ES where they modified TNGA-K ICE platform to do EV.
CH-R, Solterra, etc on the other hand are EV platform first - battery is structural and will have more passenger room than TNGA-K.

I'm always impressed by Lightning - despite modified ICE platform, they changed the crash structure enough to have the whole front part of the frunk open and multiple 120V power.
GM's frunk is quite a bit smaller and worse capability.
Rivian doesn't even do that.

even Ioniq 5 has no frunk

It does!

But maybe you meant the N. They replaced the frunk with a noise maker ><

and the other BMW platforms similar to TNGA EV don't have one either.

And what a serious step backwards that was! I put takeout in the i3's frunk all the time. Where am I supposed to put my food now?!
