I recently took my car in for some paintwork. Trunk was supposed to be color changed in and out. I was OK with the work done initially, but the more I look at it, the more things I find I'm not completely happy with. First thing I noticed was the inside of the trunk which I accepted and took the L and didn't want to deal with having to go back to the shop but now I'm noticing the scratches and the other imperfections after washing it.
Am I being nitpicky? Or is this worth bringing back and asking for a redo?
Car wasn't cleaned when I picked it up so these imperfections got missed until today when I finally washed it.
What do you guys think?
Hard to capture properly in photos, but there are imperfections that were painted over.

Area around trunk handle also has some hairline scratches, likely from a careless re-install.

Inside of the trunk wasn't fully sprayed and it bothered me initially but after sleeping on it I figured I could accept it as the trunk liner covers it up fully. Funny story is that I searched far and wide to find a blue trunk specifically for this reason but after I bought it is when I realized it had been resprayed before and the original colour was silver

I would say it depends on how much this job was. If we talking a 10-15k job, then yeah, give’em hell
If only a few thousand 2-5k, i think that’s pretty standard work for that price.
It was just an in/out respray of the trunk, not the whole car. Sub $1k cash job.

I'd say it's gonna be impossible to avoid dust nibs. They could possibly have done a better job of clearing it after spraying, but no one has clean room levels of prep unless you are paying multiple thousands of dollars.
Bummer on the handle area, I'd ask them to mitigate that, though how well are they gonna do it and if you come back with more damage is gonna be a bit of a question mark.
Imo that's a pretty good respray on the majority of surfaces, minimal orange peel. They likely didn't final sand otherwise there'd be no nibs, but hey you paid sub 1k.

sub $1000 sounds pretty standard for a trunk respray (assuming its just that, no repairs needed), not like he gave u a smoking deal. i would have no problem bringing it back. that being said the dust and area under the trim can be over looked, i would just ask them to redo the areas they scartched up from the install.
what was wrong with ur old trunk?

a few thousand to spray a trunk now? I know inflation has gone up on Pho from my old days but is this normal for bodyshops now???

I don’t know, I got quoted 32k for a full repaint of my ratrolla with 5 layers last I checked in 2022. I wasn’t going to do it, I’m just curious how much it would be because the infrared paint on the ratrolla is 5 layers and if I got into an accident, or someone keys the car, I wanted to know how big of a bill it would be.

Have the shop buff those out.
Even OEM paint don't spray inside fully. Look at the underside of your hood or fenders, I bet there is no metallic from the factory.

Yah I would go back and ask them to address the scratches but the dust fragments I think aren’t unreasonable on a quickie repaint. The quality of the finish overall is pretty good looking.

I had a CF CSL style trunk before, but while it fit well, the bodylines weren't accurate and I wasn't a huge fan. Sold it cheap (in hindsight) to a guy locally who installed it on his LSB coupe.

Not true. If you look at the reference photo of the grey factory trunk above, the inside is painted the same body colour, sans flake and clear.

I'm no autobody expert (clearly) but the whole front end was resprayed a couple years ago and there's no dust nibs anywhere on a much larger surface.. doesn't seem entirely unreasonable to have a smooth finish.

Different shop this time but I have PTSD from my last autobody experience. The paint on our daily came back worse than when I dropped it off. Had scratches everywhere and when they 'fixed' it reluctantly, I could see on my dashcam that the guy just buffed the panels dry and didn't even clean the surface first.

Shop can probably try to buff out the scratches by the trim.
On the topic of paint work and body shops....... In an icbc claim that involves paint work....... Is there any warranty for clear coat failure?? Ie hood + roof get painted in the claim..... 10 years later, the clear coat is failing, but the factory painted trunk still has good clear coat...... All the mentioned surfaces face the sky, so I figured the trunk is a good control of what the factory paint can handle over the years.

The front bumper probably saw a post paint sand and finish if it was redone. There are cars that come from factory with dust nibs.
You can say either they got lazy and didn't do it, or they charged you too little and just said it wasn't worth it.

Didn't someone else on here have some paint work redone and the second job was worse? I'd see if they can polish out the scratches and ignore the rest.

Inside of my trunk isn't sprayed fully. It's factory, same as the hood. Not saying that's the case on your car, but its pretty standard practice so I wouldn't feel bad about it. The nibs, whatever, but the scratches are pretty bad. I'd at least ask them to polish it and see what can come out.

I'd take it back to get the scratches fixed. Or have them compensate you for a detailer to polish them out since I don't think most bodyshops will have a 1" polisher to get into those tighter areas by the emblem/keyhole.
Ironically the scratches bother me the least as I figure I could hit it with a polisher and take out majority if not all of it. Most of the car needs paint correction anyway. I'm just not sure if I should wait a bit longer to give time for things to fully cure/harden?
Going back to the shop isn't the most convenient as they're in Richmond.
Thanks for all the input!

I've done a lot of home paint jobs.
Get some Meguires Swirl Remover/polisher and a gray/black foam pad from Amazon.
Take those right out by hand, circular motion.
I'd wait two weeks for it to cure. All that will cost you like $50 bucks, I suggest you use that on gas to get to richmond instead.

You went way too heavy too fast. You have to lay down like 3-4 really light coats and let it flash.
You gotta strip that and start again.
Clean it with 99% iso, prime it lightly. Your first coat should not even cover all the original color, light and slow is the key with spray paint. You can't cover mistakes with more paint.
JDMDreams
06-20-2025, 07:42 AM
Yea, too close and too heavy, you have to be patient and let each coat dry. Which shouldn't be hard as it's pretty warm right now.

YOU PAINT IT! me give you money and the paint. 100 bucks for da job? YOU TAKE MY JOB FACETROLL !!!
I've got an old DA polisher and the finest 2010s era compounds that worked well for me previously. Will give that a shot and see what happens. Trying to avoid whatever it takes to bring the car back as it means coordinating a ride etc which is probably the most painful part

There's a silver one in rougher shape for sale atm as well.
Update:
Around the time I made this thread, I decided to accept things and DIY buff out the scratches to save a trip back to the shop.
All was gravy until I took off my plate bracket and realized primer was flashing through with a noticeable section of the trunk lighter than the rest. Took it back to the shop to show them and they booked me in this month to re-do.
Picked up the car today and trunk looks acceptable but when I brought it home, I realized the M3 badge is crooked. Easy enough DIY fix, but sloppy work by the shop. Also noticed what looks like either polish residue or someone shirtless was leaning against the car and I guess they had something in their pocket because now there are a bunch of new scuffs near the fender vent. Polish residue doesn't really make sense because if they were trying to hide damages, you'd think they'd do a better job of it.
Speaking of scratches, it's pretty clear that the shop washed the car with a dirty brush because there are hairline scratches all over the newly painted trunk.
Overall, a less than stellar experience, and a reminder that I should've just waited to get an appointment at another closer shop that seems to have a constant 2 month waitlist.

Can forgive the first time, wasn’t that bad but if something goes in a second time it’s like what are we doing here guys? Where’s the pride in work? You’d think a repeat job would have a managers hands and eyes all over it but just more fuckaround, they obviously got too much juicy biz from icbc claims and don’t care about any lower paying side jobs.

Pretty much this 100%. I dealt with the owner direct too. Cool guy with a nice car collection but he needs to run a tighter ship. Would not recommend. One of the many indy honger shops along Bridgeport.
