Time to create RS Career & Retirement thread due to our aging demographic
Done! :D
I'm < 10 years out to early retirement, pretty much coastFIRE'd, although not at your wealth level. Been on the FIRE movement since 18 years old, but I've been maximizing experiences over early retirement in the last 5 years.
Pretty content since our economy was slightly worse than those born in the 80's / early 90's. Y'all had the great 1995-2026 bull-run.
I can run anytime of the day but only 90% of my days atm.
Honestly, I've never met a wife that retired any of my friends yet including the fobs, please let me know where to find them, I am super mobile and can be anywhere!
Also isn't that a shame that you have enough money to do anything in this world and you're spending it working as an eccentric hobby, not tryna be offensive. I've been ready to retire for a looooooooooong sabbatical

Better have a plan... I retired at 42, traveled around for 3 months, did everything I wanted to do and sat on my ass for 3 months after... basically I got bored and went back to work after a year...
Would've been great if I knew others in the same situation... Sure you can call your friends for lunch/dinner but you're just gonna get "sorry bro, gotta work"... how many times can you do that before your friends start ignoring you?

It’s true. But I need to keep up appearances for her parents and to an extent my parents. Otherwise I’d be just a freeloading hippie. Once the geezers are dead I’m pulling the plug on this entire facade and going straight to substance abuse and whoring.

^How would you live your next 40-50+ years once you reach your early retirement milestone?
90% of the same things I already do, minus all the time lost from kids
- raise 3-4 kids
- further connect with future wife on shared hobbies
- golf - > break 70
- pickleball - > hit 5.0+
- run - > hit 3:00 marathon
- tennis - > 3.5 +
- woodworking
- photography create a scrapbook of my mom / friends
- spend more time with friends/family, most are retiring early as well
- go back to school to learn mando / canto / spanish at a higher level
- relearn violin / piano
- volunteer
- weightlift
- garden
- slow travel
- weekly / monthly concerts
- ski
- run / book clubs
- double track days
- vball
- turn day job into p/t remote gig
- turn contract work into p/t
- teach p/t at uni like my friends
- run my businesses as owner operated, if I don't sell
All this can change, every year the things you enjoy change so much after 20's/30's. Man I can write this list in 1 minute, idk why people say they are bored after retirement or without work.
Would've been great if I knew others in the same situation... Sure you can call your friends for lunch/dinner but you're just gonna get "sorry bro, gotta work"... how many times can you do that before your friends start ignoring you?
All the business owners friends are pretty much semi-retired, but i agree, it's hard when they have day jobs, remote guys are also acting semi retired
Once the geezers are dead I’m pulling the plug on this entire facade and going straight to substance abuse and whoring.
I'm surprised you wouldn't start now, easier on the body while you're young

I'll offer a slightly different perspective.
I don't disagree about early retirement and pursuing your hobbies/interests, and shifting your energy into different types of commitments, be it family etc. These are important to you and ways to enrich your life and those around you.
Since embarking on my academic journey mid-career and as a mature student, my perspective on "retirement" would offend most people here and that is to leverage my personal, professional, and academic experience to make a positive impact in my community, my country, and globally. Volunteering for a cause you believe in is often a great start and a very rewarding experience. Since going back to school, I've made a greater impact to causes that are important to me in a much shorter period of time than I had ever before, and that alone has been a very rewarding experience.
Of course, all of this has to come with some source of financial stream and balance of personal interests, but retiring to nothingness and without a roadmap no longer seems appealing to me anymore. I'm not suggesting which is right or wrong, or better or worse, but instead, I would reframe your thought process to design your own life and to approach whatever it is that you choose to with curiosity (women included.) Even if it means pursuing a rich fob girl (or as someone suggested, a Japanese farm girl.

I retired because the company I was working for at the time went bankrupt. The CEO was stealing money... I knew how much I was making on the side from the options market, I basically said fuck it, I'm done working for people...
I didn't have time to plan things out and think things through properly. I'm working for a non profit now, keeps me busy and it's my way of giving back. It's also nice to know that I don't need the job and that I can peace out whenever I want.

I'm at coastFIRE now (some call it semi-retirement) and am between 3-7 years away from being able to do full retirement (age 53-57) as long as Trump doesn't completely tank the stock market. Even in "full" retirement I'll probably keep the little business I'm building going but I just won't put as much effort into it (I work about 2-3 days a week now) - hopefully by then it's an easy 1 day a week job that brings in the pocket change that pays for my hobbies. I have a 50 year old pal who clears $500k/yr in tech and his dream is to retire to Saltspring and have a part-time job doing baggage handling for Harbour Air. Like him, I'd be happy to have some PT gig like that (Costco?) too.
Beyond that I see golf, travel, and cooking as my primary hobbies in retirement - my kid turns 7 in a few weeks so if I retire early enough I'm still going to get to be a dad for quite a while too.
I cannot wait to stop working entirely - I'm so much happier and healthier in semi-retirement and I'm fine with giving up the income I used to have. I miss some of the nicer things but the trade has been a super easy one to make.

I came across a coffee shop + ukulele store in LA a number of years ago called U-Space.
I'd like to build something like that one day.
In semi/actual-retirement, I like the idea of running a 3rd space for people to just drop in and get to know their community. A plain old coffee shop won't do that because you'd have no reason to interact with strangers. But having some casual side-activity like drop-in judo lessons or water tasting competition or whatever, just might!
Kinda like revscene, but in person, and with coffee.
There's a run-down corner convenience store in my neighborhood that I'm eyeing. One day I'll buy it and ruthlessly tear it to the ground. I'll replace it with a two-storey concrete & steel structure and lots of wood paneling. Floor to ceiling glass. Maybe something like R Ki Coffee Lab in Richmond:

Yeah, I find it crazy. I have a pal who plans to work till 58 (he's 50) to get his full pension from the feds but his primary reason to keep working is that he think he'll have nothing to do. His wife and him both have great pensions so there's no need to get a full pension in either case and his kids will be grown up soon. He could buy an RV and hang out in Mexico like his in-laws do or he could be fun empty nesters. So many options!
I get it if someone's been hard core working class where work is your life but time really flies - by age 75 most of the hobbies go away anyways as you don't have the energy so the earlier you can get into them the better.

He said him and his wife sold their house, to retire, and bought a condo
Now he has nothing better to do because the condo is maintenance free + no garage / yard / deck / etc. So he works at home depot to fill his time. :okay:

Yah, health is important and you don't have a crystal ball. It's why I travel 3-4x a year... was going to go to Dubai last year but Qatar got bombed by Israel... definitely not going this year either... I also spend a lot of high end audio, just bought a pair of B&W Px8 S2's...

Coffee prices have skyrocketed due to recent supply issues.
Plus cost of labour.

Oh I'd just pass that cost right to my customers then! Cost of materials going up is going to affect my competitors just the same, so in the long run it's not like I'm going to be losing customers to them.
Cost of labor would be free because I'd be the only one working. Having customers lined up out the door, can only look good for the business :D.

Mostly lease
- $6-10K/month for anything small but in a good area
- $10-20K/month for anything 1,000+ sqft in a good area / busy street
- base + op costs, commercial covers strata + pptax + repairs, so you get destroyed
2-3 employees at min wage FT is around $10K/month after employer CPP/EI, OT, training, 4% vacation.
Commercial insurance is another $500-1K/month, mandatory on loan / lease
Utilities / Garbage - $500/month

For those of you with tinnitus, have you tried these before?
https://www.flareaudio.com/en-ca/collections/noise-sensitivity
A few years ago I had oddly developed some ear ringing, and it was annoying / aggrevating as heck. And then I came across an early version of this Flare Audio product, and I thought there was nothing I can lose for $20 - $30. Much to my surprise, the pair of Calmer ear thingy worked pretty well, and they somehow cut out / dial down a lot of the harshness in the sounds I heard, including the ear ringing. The only downside for me was -- they had a tendency to not stay in my ears for too long, as in, they migth come lose after I wore them for 30+ min. And then they may fall out.
They have fancier versions now, and I have no idea how well those well, and I'm too cheap to pay more anyway.

I dunno how those could work, the source of the ringing isn't external?
My trick is to just distract from the ringing. I always have some sort of background noise happening... TV on, play some music, etc...
I'm still convinced that it may be an earwax issue because I was watching TV one day and it just came on. I thought it would go away quickly with the flow of ear wax like it has many times before but it never did... just stuck around... doctor says my ears are clean... who knows... It could also be how I keep my jaw clenched... there is the odd morning I wake up and it's gone

Have you tried hearing aids? They can be programmed to help nullify tinnitus - it can work really well. Bad tinnitus can cause a lot of mental health problems over time.

It could be a jaw issue - worth talking to an ENT about it.
My right ear is really fragile (beyond my moderate-severe hearing loss) - it can cut out in the middle of a conversation, when higher pitched sounds get too loud it turns to static and my ear physically hurts (like someone is stabbing it with a needle), and it often will feel clogged - I can hear sounds but they are all muffled.
My ENT said all 3 of those symptoms were actually jaw issues - your jaw is connected to your ear via tendons and muscles. When the jaw is tired or inflamed it will "clench" my ear causing my problems. The fixes were to wear a mouthguard at night to reduce grinding, to chew less on my right side, improve my sleep, and cut out crunchy foods and stuff like chewing gum.
All of these have helped (maybe a 20-30% improvement) and when I don't wear my mouthguard for a couple nights or have a bad night of sleep I can noticeably feel the difference.

Not to be an Apple shill, but Airpods Pro (starting from version 2) have built-in hearing aid function in case someone's reading this but not quite ready to jump to full-on hearing aids.
They're not as good as actual hearing aids. But based on experience with my dad, it's at least a half-step there.
It lets you create and/or just load an audiogram for a starting point, and customize the frequency response from there as you need. I tried them on and could suddenly follow conversations through the windows of a restaurant lol.

I have some time so here's my thoughts, I think this time it's the great reset as some people call it. I don't think the lifestyle we grew up with really will exist anymore. This is due to government policy, putting woke, dei, acknowledgment as first priority over actual performance. Think of the Olympics but instead of best performance you get participation medals.
Due to government policies, it's no longer financially possible to run a small business let alone a big one. As others pointed out before the cost of just having the space to start a huge financial cost. What can a small business sell that you can't get from Amazon the next day, maybe food, but just look at how many restaurants closed so far this year, maybe health care but then even higher upstart costs. Then you have labour costs, crime. Look at how many businesses close due to crime, all the Pokemon cards stolen. So why would you invest the money to even start a business.
Next big thing is I think Canada real estate, which is a huge part of our gdp and economy is done. The final nail in the coffin is the land title shit that they are doing now. No one will invest in real estate again. First the numbers no longer work, even if rates drop, it won't drop significantly unless something crazy happens. Even if rates are cheap, inflation, land cost and wages will keep prices up. Second who the hell is buying the houses, we have no population growth cuz it's too expensive to have kids, it's not like we have no land in Canada. And the quality of people we bring in can't afford houses. Lastly is the land title issue, no one will buy if there is no trust, or your house value will drop 50% overnight just for government funzies. I think we will slowly turn into Japan, population decline, aging population that I don't know how we're gonna feed, houses will slowly drop in value or at least no longer climb much.
Next is government policies, I don't think the first world we know it will survive, I think our world status will continue to decline, we have the resources but due to unwillingness to develop, sell resources we shot ourselves in the foot. Besides this I can't think of a way that we can finance our aging population without just raising taxes and print money, just like the US. But with the land title thing no business will spend billions to build a factory or pipeline, mine just to give to the natives.
Lastly is ai, you are just a number to your company, the moment they can replace you with an app or robot they will. Look at all the white collar jobs that can be replaced with ai, accounting, programming, lawyers, even doctors, ai doctor/ lawyer can just pull the world's knowledge, case studies and have live updates. You can't tell me a computer, won't be more accurate with taxes since all your tax slips are all digital now a days anyways. Even things like factory workers, security guards, Burger flippers, once they can put a robot in you're gone. No breaks, holidays needed, can work 24/7 like China car factories. If they can build the car, I'm sure they can put it together so a robot can fix also. Think of all the value for stake holders.
So my conclusion is grab all the cash, assets you can now, get out of fiat cuz cash is trash, the gov can only continue to print and devalue cash. Now that re is uninvestable, I guess your options with be gold, not silver or copper lol, stocks, or crypto, art and cars are kinda hard to unload and take with you if you have to flee. Good day to buy some smci stock.

How many of you here are active volunteers in your community? More than just one-offs... I'm thinking of board work, coaching a team, etc. It can be anything as long as it's recurring and has some rules and the inevitable politics that can often come with these types of commitments.
I'll start - I've been on our strata council for several years and I've been an exec on my kids' school PAC for several years.
im not active because i became too busy but i used to do volunteer search and rescue for a few years. if i had semi retired hours i would gladly do it again.
the average volunteer does around 200-300 hours a year, so it's a decent commitment. and many do 500+.

Also have not, my tinnitus is like a 1/10. When its quiet around me, i can hear it non stop. Otherwise the majority of the day i dont hear it as other sounds are louder (or i have gotten useto it).

Outside of that, I volunteer several hours a month supporting marketing initiatives for a non-profit/community service that teaches advanced driving techniques for new/young drivers. In addition, I support Mackenzie Health, Sick Kids Hospital, and BC Children's on their fundraising initiatives and help onboard ballers to participate and support the "Drive to Smile" campaigns for kids who really need a smile on their faces. And finally, I volunteer as a mentor to new grads entering the workforce with a focus on women in technology.
Otherwise, I'm standing in line at the food bank and eagerly waiting to collect my welfare cheque on Wednesdays.

im not active because i became too busy but i used to do volunteer search and rescue for a few years. if i had semi retired hours i would gladly do it again.
the average volunteer does around 200-300 hours a year, so it's a decent commitment. and many do 500+.
Oh damn, that's cool.
Any stories?
we were mostly urban search not mountain search, but we did assist in mutual aid with the mountain rescue teams when necessary. i did get dropped in via helicopter a few times but never hung off one to do a longline rescue or anything crazy like that.
one of my highlights was being on task when we found this lady. it wasn't my group but we were all in the area when one of the groups stumbled upon her.

The young tech bros here who treat life as some sort of RPG with experience points could learn a lot from you and this post.

That's certainly one way to frame it! :)
I can't recall which thread it was, but a number of folks here said they come on to RS for mental therapy. Hey, if it works, then great! :)

Thanks dear leader, buying the dip, but I guess the dippity dip will keep dipping cuz retard won't shut up and we're not tired of winning yet
I think whatever you decide to do post-retirement, it needs to be something fulfilling. Else, like many have said, you'd jump right back after some time.
I generally take inspiration from people I look up to.
Some went into philanthropy full time, some went into mentoring, some took their hobby to pro but they have that thing in common, it keeps them busy and they feel fulfilled.
I have been planning my retirement for a while now. And the idea is a coffee house where one comes to create. I'd have some photostudio space, full commercial kitchen, a coffee roasting shop and a studio to display/sell the work. Not planning to make any money out of it, but I like coffee, food and photography, it's to provide a place for people who share similar interest to create/experiment something new, especially the next generation of artists.

Sounds like a bunch of us have similar ideas. A joint venture in the making!

Replace Photostudio with pornography studio and sign me up.

No one said anything about what can be filmed in the studio. :ifyouknow:
