A house party in South Vancouver turned deadly overnight after a fight between three teenage girls ended in a fatal stabbing.

Officers were called to a rental home near the 6600-block of Knight Street and East 51st Avenue just before 1 a.m. Friday. Police say a fight broke out between three girls in a basement suite and two ended up being stabbed.

Const. Jana McGuinness said approximately 40 drunken teens were discovered in the home.

"It was pretty chaotic when we got there," she said.

"There was kids trying to leave, there was kids all though the house, outside the house."

One victim was found outside.

"Very tragically there was a young girl dying on the sidewalk. She is 17 years old and she was lying on the sidewalk unconscious with multiple stab wounds," she said.

The girl was rushed to hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly after. Another 16-year-old victim was taken to hospital. She was treated and later released.

The suspect fled the scene. No arrests have been made and investigators have yet to put together a description or profile of the suspect.

"The case is moving forward," McGuinness said. "There are a lot of witnesses and interviews to be done," she said.

Police have not been able to get in contact with the owners of the home. It is not believed there were any adults in the residence when the party was happening.

The victim's name is expected to be released after her family has been notified.

This is Vancouver's fifth homicide of 2010.

every generation before us partied just as hard, if not harder. shit like this happens and its tragic but in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't happen often.

I drove by earlier and saw a bunch of police cars and tape everywhere wondering what was going on. Damn so close to home.

the tape was still there when i got off there (5pm)

cbc news was there

saw all the police tape when i was driving by this morning

more fucked up thing is.. why is there a big house party on a Thursday night!?
