"Teen trades old cellphone for Porsche convertible
July 19th 2010,

A California teenager has traded a cellphone valued at $30 for a 2000 Porsche Boxster S.

According to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, 17-year-old Steven Ortiz used the 'barter' section of popular classifieds website Craigslist to slowly trade up to the convertible. He started with a cellphone and got incrementally more valuable items over two years and 14 trades.

Some of the items he traded over the period include a MacBook Pro an iPod touch, a 1987 Toyota 4Runner and more.

This is not a new concept, a Canadian was able to trade a red paperclip for a two story farmhouse over a year in 2005.

"A lot of people don't have money right now, in this economy. So they think, `I really need a new phone, but I don't have the money. Here I have this CD player lying around that I don't use anymore, maybe I can trade," Steven's father Esteban told the paper.

Reportedly, Ortiz says a lot of people ask him if they can trade a cellphone for a car "Yeah. It's not that easy," he replies"

Only in America. Up here in Canada people are smart enough to know what their possessions are worth.

Saw this on the news, the kid actually lost in his last trade value wise, he traded a 1975 Ford Bronco, thats actually a collectors item valued at $15,000 for the Porsche Boxster which was only valued at $9000.
