According to the woman, the couple had always used birth control pills or condoms. However, believing her boyfriend’s advice, she stopped using any form of contraceptive and instead started to douche with cola after sex. The result, she became pregnant.

The woman’s obstetrician, Dr. Le Thi Kim Dung from the Thai Ha Laborer’s Health Center (in Hanoi), told us, using cola or any beverage to douche after sex to avoid pregnancy is a mistake. None of these liquids are able to kill sperm.

"Especially around the day of ovulation, the chances of becoming pregnant from sex is extremely high. Any preventative measures (such as bathing or douching) are useless" said Dr. Le.

He added, spermicides are another method of contraceptive but they have a failure rate of up to 20%. Moreover, these need to be used before intercourse to be effective. Also, using sugary drinks to wash can lead to vaginal infections.

Therefore it is best to use methods of contraception that have been proven to be reliable and effective.

I would have been so confused about "douching"
but I just watched a Peter Chao video last week where he was talking about
douche bags. (and explaining how there's another meaning to the word than the
one we all know about)
