IBM is a strong and well structured company... its focus is B2B so unless you work in an active organization you won't see IBM around much...
Full Summary:
yes, back in the 80s - 90s IBM's focus was making household computers but and was one of the largest competitor in the market. By late 90s more and more companies joined in and started saturating the market. IBM's machine was just not fit for the consumer market, they moved to businesses. It was doing "ok" but what really differentiate and business machine and consumer machine? At this point IBM made a huge shift... business services and solutions. They sell intelligence, the ability to help other companies where they can't. You can go to IBM's web site and notice the page is not filled with computers and servers but rather more corporate service. Since then IBM remains a giant in the business industry and very reputable at that.
Timing may be off but this is as much as I remember...
