For around the price range i would personally choose either a:

-Honda Civic
-Honda Fit
-Toyota Corolla
-Toyota Yaris hatchback

All these new vehicles are very fuel efficient and are known for its reliability.

There are many cars on the market, so you should test drive any car that comes to mind. You don't know, you just might like a Yaris hatchback instead of a Civic.
