Depends what you're selling..
I've never encountered any problems. I've sold things from $10 to $500. Just check the buyer's feedback and you should be okay.
If it's like a $5 iPhone case, no one's going to bother scamming you out of that.
If it's a more expensive item, then opt for a shipping method with tracking number and info.
If you plan on opening an eBay store or something, then another option is to open another bank account and Paypal so you have all your records from day 1 to give you more credibility if a problem was to come up.
But I think for the most part, you should be safe.
