On a slightly less serious note, a reputable dealership will be "less likely" to sell you a lemon, but it's still up to you - the buyer - to do your due diligence and research a car you're interested in. Ask for an ICBC Report and Carfax. Even if they come up clean, look for any irregular gaps in the body panels or extra wear on the shifter/steering wheel/pedals if the car states it's low mileage. Mechanically, it's a crapshoot. Unless the car comes with a book of receipts of work done, assume the worst and that the previous owner mistreated it. CPO's do have to go through a thorough inspection, but that typically doesn't involve opening up an engine to look at specific parts. Depending on what you're looking at buying, a third-party warranty might be useful to pick up. Ask me how I know...
