Because the MP who introduced the bill is dying of ALS, and they wanted him to be able to witness and participate in the vote.
If it was going to happen eventually anyway, then it's not costing anything it wouldn't have cost eventually, and it's a class move to make it happen while the guy was still around to see it.
Like others have pointed out, it's actually closer to the original version now - think there was this much fuss when the line was changed TO the "sons" version in the first place??
I remember learning it as "and stand on guard, oh Canada, we stand on guard for thee". That line was changed to "from far and wide, oh Canada". Bryan Adams got shit on for singing the previous version once, which of course, was the version he grew up with.
The anthem has changed before. Guarantee it will change again. If you're gonna get bent out of shape every time it happens you're going to live a very sad life.
