I think thats partly a result of building mega Olympic parks for the Olympics. It seems like such a cool idea building all brand new venues and having them all together in one big mega complex, but once things go back to real life, they end up unused and out of the way. Vancouver did it right by building city amenity buildings (like the oval) in places that made sense spread around the city in places to house events that would continue to be used after the games were over. Whatever your feelings on the Olympics are, Vancouver was one of the few cities that actually did it right from a future use, legacy, and economic standpoint.
sydney, socchi, rio, etc all did it and as far as i know, most of them are unused now.
