I'm in the automotive industry and generally we have to equip this in our vehicles now to reduce the fuel consumption/emissions based on regulatory requirements of each country (ie. CAFE in the states).
It's considered a cheap and viable option to improve fuel consumption in comparison to the high cost of improving aerodynamics or high competitive/customer impact of lower the engine output.
There are also no evidence of any long term durability impact, as it goes through the same manufacture/government durability test as all other parts of the vehicle.
Some fun facts from the supplier johnson controls:

I recall the early BMWs with this feature would start up again with a jiggle of the steering wheel
Accidentally discovered this feature in the manual Ford van we rented in Europe. Put in neutral at a light, release clutch pedal, car shuts off; thought I stalled it in neutral wtf. Clutch pedal in, car restarts

I am sure they designed and tested the starter to last 3-4 years, or however long the warranty period they offer.
After that you are SOL lol

i've driven a few loaner cars like this
i honestly find it pretty annoying but i'm sure if i drove a car with this feature regularly, i'd get used to it
