Fuck with them as in cranking put on parts without getting a proper tune, thus making the engine run too lean as well as increasing knock counts. I wouldn't worry about it too much, normal maintenance and not being a dumbfuck can make any engine reliable. If anything, I gota say the new 4b11T is pretty darn reliable, I changed the MAF sensor housing, and in effect, fucked up my AFR as well as my boost level, so I was logging my car in four gear and I found out I was overboosting at 30 psi and had consistent over 30-40 counts of knocks over 4000-7000 RPM . In other words, I almost blew my engine, thank god it didn't.

Modified boosted boxers, sure. Does not apply to NA (since we're comparing to a Honda). Which takes us back to your point about old boxers.

IMO you should just drive both and see which one you like more. In the end, it is your decision.

civic si hands down, get a 4door or something if u want a bit more room.
u will ALWAYS regret getting the fit later on when u just want that LIL bit of power and knew u could of had a choice of the SI, thats just human nature.
as 4 xtc's comment about boosting the fit.. if u REALLY wanna throw 30psi into a lil engine... go 4 it..but in the end ur gonna wish u had the 4g's 2 blow on something else and a sunroof in ur car
