question..do you only get points from those who are starting ? IE. do you get points for the guys in utility and bench ? IF not, how can we switch who becomes active and who gets on the bench

You get points for utility players. No points if they're benched.
Go to My Team>Roster. From there you can click on the blue buttons next to player names to move them between active/bench.

I wasn't able to make it to the changed time of the draft, pretty surprised the autodraft picked me a decent team  just need to do something about these goalies... Miller, Anderson, and Greiss
