L' Artista on Hastings.

I ate here just the other day and it was pretty good. There is even a coupon in the Entertainment Book to get up to $20 off one entree.

The Japanese waiter there is very attentive. He used to work at Amarcord.

Is Via Veneto closed? Wanted to try the lobster pasta after seeing that photo, but I guess that's out of the question now.

Yes, they shut down earlier this year. Godammit. I think it's a global tragedy that they went out of business.

L' Artista's "Fettuccine ai Frutti di Mare" has a sauce that is similar to what the lobster pasta was like. Just order that and imagine a 1.5 lbs lobster on top instead of the prawns, clams & mussels.

Rosa's Cucina in Port Moody is good. The only drawback is no reservation. Food portion is decent and the taste is good too.

Very sad to see this place go. Manlio had so much passion when it came to his restaurant business but Via Veneto was definitiely burning him out. Every time I visited the resto it was less than half full, portions dwindled and I think the excitement to recreate his once successful run with Amacord just drained him. To be honest, where VV was located (broadway) was probably the major factor on why it didn't work. It's located right in the heart of the business centres where lunch crowds are probably his largest sales hour. You got all the Cactus/Joeys etc restos on every block which probably takes away his dinner crowds and when the offices close down for the day (5pm) everyone goes home or towards DT/YT area.

Another reason I think is, no one really "knew" he came back. I asked him why he didn't want to promote himself as the old Amacord owner and he said he wanted to start fresh. I guess I can understand..but I think he would have been more successful if more people knew. His restaurant during his YT days was and still is one of the best restos to have ever opened up. It's such a shame to see his hard work and food go to waste.

I hope he isn't in too much debt from this as he is SUCH a nice guy. His tiramisu is still one of the best I've ever had. Ahhhhh, so sad.

Anyone opening up on that area of broadway has a deathwish. The foot traffic after 6 is literally no one. Its such an ugly dead area of the city. I used to live over there and just hated it. It was so boring. I never tried it. I would have liked to but as you said, I just didn't spend time over there if I wasn't home.

Aaaaahhh DAMN I did NOT know that VV was the same place as Amacord! I tried to go back to Amacord after I had their dreamy Lobster Pasta and found they were closed, I was so sad. If I knew he re-opened I would have went back!...

The lobster pasta ...

I think it was the divorce that really burned him out, unfortunately.

His bread was amazing, and I can't say enough about the lobster pasta.

Ayumu, the Japanese waiter who used to work at Amarcord & Via Venetto is now working at L'Artista on Hastings.
