Are "K band" radars used by police in BC?

I have a radar detector and I get K band falses all day in the city which is getting very annoying so I'm debating wether I should just turn off K band alerts. I don't think my RD has ever picked up a cop using K band its always KA.

Do any cities use K band?

kwy 03-28-2012 08:55 PM

I believe a lot of them are using laser now instead of radar.

Recon604 03-28-2012 09:15 PM

k bands are used on automatic door openers, like at superstore, etc.
cops here uses Ka Band and laser, i think

TypeRNammer 03-28-2012 10:31 PM

The police use both K band and KA band.

If you're using a Valentine One radar, get rid of it and switch over to the Passport 9500ix.

bluejays 03-28-2012 10:36 PM

Everytime I go by a speed trap it's my Ka band going nuts

I've had my radar detector for about a year now and i've never run into a cop using K band always KA band. Has anybody?

I like the directional arrows on my V1

Its always KA band for me even when cops are driving around the city.

Lol at directional arrows...

I prefer the GPS function on my 9500ix which blocks out all the false signals.

AND software updates which comes in handy.

FI-Z33 03-28-2012 11:06 PM

occasionally they use K bands... seen it happen a couple times

edit: i use passport 9500ix, btw

might have to upgrade after reading this though

Most likely what radar guns the police are using. K-band is used more for moving objects not so much cars.

something great about the 9500ix is it automatically detects false alarms and it stores them using the gps function...so the next time you drive by that shoppers drug mart, it doesn't go off (i have no idea how this technology works, but i drive by malls and such all the time and it just beeps and says that its "stored".

look into it...although it's a little on the pricey end, but it may be worth it!

Actually how this function works is, if you drive by the false location 3 times, it will automatically store the location on the 9500ix.

You can also manually block out the false signals by double clicking the mute button.

Never said I was better than everybody else, I have a strong personal preference for the GPS function which strongly aids in blocking out false signals, software updates, which has a North American database, compared to...directional arrows and hardware updates which requires you to ship out the unit.

FI-Z33 03-28-2012 11:33 PM

^haha i never have to manually double click it...that thing works like a charm operating by itself

I was just kidding lol

I do a lot of highway driving for school and work so the directional arrows are very useful...But I dont like them enough to put up with 10 false alerts a day. $600 is a lot for a radar detector though.

Yeah I didn't take offense to it, no worries

If you look hard enough on craigslist, you can find the 9500ix for under 500 brand new.

Recon604 03-29-2012 09:21 AM

Or you can find a cheap 9500i, I found one on craiglist for $300. And you can upgrade the 9500i to 9500ix for $129.95! you still save lots of amount of money!

thats what I did

RCubed 03-29-2012 09:28 AM

I had a v1 and the amount of falses it gave drove me nuts. not to mention that the v1 is huge and looks like something from the 90s.
Sold it and bought a 9500ix.

Great, so all the cops need to do is sit outside the Shoppers Drug Mart and shoot K band at you.

The only thing radar/laser detectors are good for is letting you know that you're about to get an increase in your road tax.

melloman 03-29-2012 01:02 PM

I've always had Ka and Laser at speed traps.

I run into K band on cruisers who are just driving around. They might leave their onboard radar detector on and it's a K Band signal. Had it happen more then once, yet my gf lives near Burnaby copshop.

IMO I chose the 9500ix over the V1 just for the amount of falses people complain about. Got mine off CL 3 weeks old for $450.

Vale46Rossi 03-29-2012 01:18 PM

The K band radars are being used on cruisers which happens really often in Richmond. On a regular basis I run in to police with K band in their cruisers.

Also once you get used to using the Valentine 1 the false ain't that bad since you are used to it.... That being said have been using it for 6 years.....

The arrows come really in handy when you want to know where exactly they are from.

Also speed signs use K band radar

RCubed 03-29-2012 02:39 PM

Yes, because people with radar detectors speed everywhere they go.

Only run into K band cruisers in Richmond.
I'm running Escort Redline, compared to my 9500ix, it's about the same. So if anyone thinking of getting one, go for the 9500ix. ( cheaper I think, haven't look at the prices for a while)
