Well now I've gone and done it...

Just picked up a '92 YJ from an estate sale for $2500. Aside from reeking of cigarettes inside (previous owner died of cancer, go figure) it's in really nice shape.

I get the feeling this could be spendy by the time I'm through with it

Pics to come...

We bought a 2008 Patriot new, took it up around Stave a couple times (http://www.revscene.net/forums/67112...ml#post7986539), up some forestry roads around Whistler (http://www.revscene.net/forums/579687-whistler.html), but nothing really serious (the CVT doesn't do steep very well, plus the wife would kill me if I hurt it).

Finally, a toy for some serious gettin' dirty!

Sooo tempting, but there's a bunch of "needs" that have to come before the "wants", and I can't afford them yet either.

One want that's near the top of the list is some steps so my wife can get in easier...

Did a bit more highway driving today, discovered the first thing that needs to be addressed is the speed shake: approaching 100 it starts a shimmy, and at 110 it gets severe. Almost feels like a loose wheel... my brother suggested maybe a wheel bearing that wasn't snugged down. Steering's a little twitchy at speed too, so this sounds plausible.

That sounds more like death wobble, there's something called a track bar up front, check the bushings and make sure the bolts are tight

Anything that's loose (tie rods, ball joints, u bolts, shackle bolts, worn out steering box etc etc) can cause death wobble. Your jeeps not lifted so it's most likely not a caster angle problem. I don't know if that's what the problem is with your jeep though..

Thanks - looked it up on jeepforum.com, sounds like a pretty broad description for a range of problems. I'll have to give it a good going-over when the weather allows.

Ohhhhh the death wobble. Its .....deadly. I'm just finishing up a 93yj with a six inch lift and 36's I put a ford 8.8 in it and an xj d30 with chromos and a customized xj long arm front suspension and xj leafs. Its easy to check what might be causing it. A couple good friends of mine run Jeep thrills if you wanna have some smart jeep guys check it out or I'd be happy to lend you some expertise of you wanna venture so far out in a deathly wobbler lol.
My ZJ gets a good amount of wobble occasionally anywhere between 40-80km/h I give the steering wheel a little jerk and she calms down usually. No point in fixing the worn bushings causing it just yet cus I only wheel it a couple times after fixing it and it start wobbling again. ZJ's with no sway bars flex farther then the bushings were ever intended to go.

Swing by my shop ( just down the street from Jeep Thrills ) and see me. I may have a product to help kill off that smoke smell.

Which part of the building are you in this week, Ken? And did you ever get your WiFi working??

Phil, it really only kicks in around 105-110, so I'm not too concerned until I need to hit the Coq or something Popping out to RMD doesn't worry me, except it's a ways to go (I'm in Pitt Meadows) and I really won't have any free time until the weekend. Jeep Thrills is a LOT closer, wouldn't mind having them take a look, except I'm dead broke until payday

Hmmm, wonder if this has anything to do with my Death Wobble? Seeing as it only kicks in above 110, maybe that's the point the stresses become enough that this has an effect...

Well, at least this is a simple fix - new bushings should only be a couple bucks.

Go see Bryson at thrills. Tell him your a friend of mine ( he'll say he feels for ya) and I said to go down there and ask if they had a couple spare shock pin bushings lying around. They will have a thousand of those things layin around and prob just give them to ya.
