The fruit will taste like shit unless the trees are pruned as well.

This is idiotic.

Put the fruit trees in the public parks.

Consider them "wild".
If the public eats them and gets sick, their problem.
If a neighborhood takes care of the trees in their public park, they get to keep them.
If a neighborhood doesn't, then they don't get trees in their park.
Far enough away from homes.
Might give the parents something to do when they bring their kids to the park.

Add it to the Vancouver Parks Board, after all, they are professional green thumbs are they not?

In Rome, they have a type of orange tree that is commonly grown along the streets. It is of the bitter tasting variety so you see a lot of them left on the ground or stepped on my pedestrians. It's funny watching people that are unaware take a bite out of one and immediately spit it on the ground.

neat idea

been to a lot of places where they planted fruit trees on public streets and guess what? the streets were clean

even bankrupt places like athens were able to keep the streets clean i can't see it being a problem here

Whoever thought of this idea should be shot.

It's a cool idea and all, except that maintenance will probably cost tax payers tons more money. Like mentioned prior, these tree's will need: spraying for insects, collection of fruit, pruning, watering.

And I thought bike lanes were bad..

There are a few parks around Saanich & Victoria with apple trees/orchards.

We don't have any problems over here.

Has it been confirmed that the city will maintain the trees?

Delta planted boulevard trees a few years back and it was the responsibility of the home owner to maintain...my parents did not have a choice in the matter.

Let's hope that this dude doesn't live in the area....we'd never hear the end of it: http://www.revscene.net/forums/67874...ver-fence.html

A bunch of idiotic politicians are proposing the craziest ideas these days.

Fruit trees? Really?? If this stupid idea comes to "fruition", it will turn our parks into a produce section at a supermarket.

I like this idea a lot better. I took a random drive through vancouver(from downtown to boundary and marine) just by taking sidestreets. Realized that there's tons of parks with barely anything in them, plant a few of these and it will give people something to do in the summer, pick some apples, or have apple fights, or apple golf. Not feeling the street idea. Gets very messy.

I think everybody should stop having "lawns" and start having "gardens" ... also i think the city should plant all sorts of fruit n vegetable trees all around parks instead of leaving it as "grass" ...

we live in vancouver for godsakes u dont need to take care of trees and plants its friggin raining 300 days a year !!
