| Three cars impounded; two unlicensed drivers Three high-end cars taken off the road for reckless driving on Highway One | Globalnews.ca Quote:
Three high-end cars have been impounded by the RCMP after speeding and weaving through traffic on Highway 1 on Sunday.
The cars, including a 2013 Porsche Panamera, 2012 BMW 750 and a 2013 BMW M5, were reported speeding and driving recklessly along Highway 1 between Mt Lehman Rd in Abbotsford and 264th Street in Langley.
They were allegedly travelling between 130-160 km/hour.
It was also reported the cars were using the right hand shoulder to overtake other cars.
After police officers pulled them over, it turned out only one of the three young men driving the cars had a valid Learner’s driving licence. The other two drivers were unlicensed.
All three vehicles were impounded for seven days and the drivers were issued 15 days driving prohibitions and violation tickets for speed related offence and driving without consideration.
Anyone with information with regards to this incident is asked to contact the Port Mann Traffic Services at (604) 526-9744 or Crime Stopper.

I see people in cars that are shitboxes compared to those 3 well over 130 all the time on the way.
I hate how society/the media jumps on these drivers cause they have a expensive car.

Graeme, do you know if the drivers were rich second generation Chinese (aka fu er dai)?
Personally, I think they are. An L driver and two unlicensed with a B7, F10 M5 and Panamera just screams sons & daughters of nouveau riche.

Fucked if I know. I don't read Chinese, so I have no idea what that means. Also, the only thing I know about this is what's in the story.
It's been previously discussed the destruction of this kind of property is an unreasonable seizure of personal property which I personally agree with as a general rule. But I think that we need to find some kind of mechanism that will levy an adequate punishment for people who are not only flaunting the driving laws, but even the driver's licensing system itself.
Obviously fines and a quick impound are insufficient as this just doesn't end.

good thing the police responded before they claimed a couple of lives...this could've gone down really badly if the weather condtions were poor like this morning.

Unlicensed drivers should be charged heavily, cars can, and do, kill... Cars driven at high speed by inexperienced (I'm assuming unlicensed means not experienced) drivers should be deemed a very serious offence, he'll, driving unlicensed should be a serious offence
But we'll continue to give minor slaps on the wrist until someone gets seriously injured, a real lack or foresight by our law makers - this place is a joke!

The issue becomes how do we punish people?
"Don't drive" -> well, we know how effective that's gonna be
"Pay a fine and/or get points!" -> pay the fine, and then what?
"Jail time!" -> how much? One of the things that pisses me off about legislation on hot-topic issues is that it's so often disproportional to serious stuff. 'cause vehicular manslaughter can get you less jail time than animal cruelty.
Fickleness, thy name is citizenry.

Now the story: I can't believe you get a harsher penalty for driving after having had a few drinks (BAC between 0.05 and 0.08) than you do driving reckless without a freaking license! Priorities... Quote:

(a bit of an exaggeration but I get what you mean)
On the other hand, these kids obviously flaunted the law, having shown zero respect for the safety and well being of motorists and everyone else who shares the road. They need to be punished. In Switzerland, traffic fines scale up with income-I'd like to see something like that established in Canada. I'd love to see the mental gymnastics people bring out to protest it, though.

BoB: actually, the punishment for .05 is about the same as doing this: a fine and an impoundment.
Thanks for the translation but it's still not gonna help me. I'm whiter than the driven snow. As much as I'd love to read chinese, it's all still very confusing squiggles.

As much as I'd love to read chinese, it's all still very confusing squiggles. | I don't mean to derail the thread but fuck me, break up Vancouver's taxicab cartel and expand Nightbus-the reason people drive in warn stage is because alternative ways home are prohibitively expensive for a lot of people. And re: the logic of "if you have money to go out and drink, you have money to hail a cab"-I want to ask those kind of people if they've tried hailing a cab in downtown after midnight.
As for Chinese, I thoroughly enjoy learning how characters developed. For example, the character for "nation" or "state" comes from the character for "jade" (representing the emperor of China) enclosed by a square (representing the country's borders). I guess that's why I've been called a masochist. The more you know.

This is kinda funny because every single time one of these pops up, everyone jumps quick to being jelly because of "mommy and daddy's money". I mean honestly, we can be arguing all we want that CRUSH THEIR CARS YEAHH THAT'S GOING TO HURT THEM MORE THAN SMALL FINES. But we have to look at ourselves. That only sets the new standard. What's drinking and driving going to be now? The death sentence?
Yeah I'll jump to say that I think they need to be punished. However, maybe instead of punishing them, educate them. People need to think outside of the box. Sure, punishing them deters them from doing it again, but in reality they won't know the real reason why it's wrong. It's definitely better to teach them what's wrong. Send these guys to driving school. They'll eventually be back on the road anyways, why not correct their mistakes?
