amnesty international claims 2 dead but they haven't confirmed it

the police say no dead but 1 seriously injured so not as bad as social media is trying to make it out to be

the protests are peaceful today (flip to bbc)

And when looking at satellite imagery there are far more parks than this 1 park that's going to be turned into a mall so it would seem that the leadership behind the protests are just using this as an excuse to protest against the government probably because they haven't been able to win an election in over a decade

I've seen several pretty gruesome pics...I'm pretty sure it's as bad out there as people make it out to be.

Saw some dude that got shot in the face with a gas grenade. Not pretty.

bbc... the protest happened out of the blue so initially there may not have been coverage but its been relatively non-stop since

what's amazing is that Turkey has been economically awesome, yes awesome, and its democratic so wtf vote him out if you don't like him
I was there a few years ago and it certainly didn't seem like some dictatorship that has been subjugating the public so imo these protests are rather suspicious; the bbc seems to feel the same

I'd hate to see these protesters force Turkey to fall from its economic momentum

Violence

I never understand why governments feel the need to battle protesters in this manner. Turkey being the most recent example, have given the protesters even more to riot about now by killing their own people. WTF is up with that logic? I bet if you just let them "protest", let them shout till there faces go blue eventually they will get bored and give up. If they continue to grow and get destructive, then maybe its a good time to listen to what they want?

There's surprisingly little coverage of this.

Reuters Next — Gallery: Protests in Turkey

...there's a picture of a guy taking a direct in the balls from a firehose. He's wearing pants but still.

And this

Rival soccer fans. I think it would take Independence Day aliens to attack before we hug a Boston Bruins fan like that.

Turkey is not a sovereign state so its foreign policy will be at conflict with the people.

To El Bastardo
I disagree.

I have a friend who had numerous friends there right now so hes getting lots of updates on his feed; this is one of them

Quote:
A recent status update form one.. "Please read!! The
government is not serving its prople, it's killing them!!!
The police continue to gas bomb the places that hold
injured people like mobile hospital, universities where
medical students, pharmacies, doctors and lawyers
are offering their services for free. There are 100s of people are injured, not 50 as it's announced. The
government denies everything but keep ordering to
attack people with all their power. Government is not
stepping back. The police keep attacking without
warning right after they're been "ordered" to "step
back". This is how they let the international press know but the truth is the opposite. Our friends and
family are still under attack. The Prime Minister still
says that his Government does not care what we do
and they will continue to use force. The military hasn't
been involved because all the Generals, journalists
are in jail because they used their right to talk, to protest. And the rest is under Government's control.
"This is what’s happening in Turkey. I would not call it
a Turkish Spring: we don’t need revolution. This is
Turkey, taking its secular democracy back. No more
corruption, no more radical Islamism, no more
FASCISM!""
Starbucks is a traitor to Turkish nation too.. People
open their store, home to help injured people from the
street who are traumatized, dying or got poisoned,
only place that shot down their doors to those people
who asked for help are Starbucks locations. I will
never step in any Starbucks ever in my life!
Here's a news article regarding this; take it how you want

Yeah lots of obvious propaganda by the opposition calling the government islamist (although its roots are) is hilarious even the BBC is like when they've been everything but since being elected

even Amnesty International can't back up the protester claims Turkey must end abusive use of force and reveal the extent of injuries | Amnesty International citing unfounded claims and asking the Turkish govt. to reveal the extent of injuries (which the Doctors association does say is in the 1000s)

Instead of destroying their country with this rioting and propaganda campaign they should just beat the ruling party in a democratic election (even though they haven't been able to for the last decade)

I don't know who's telling the truth but I do see a lot of pictures of riot police beating the shit out of people and people with huge wounds in their heads from being hit by the gas canisters...not to mention all the people being sprayed by tear gas from what looks like gas cans? And they're not violent people either...some girl in a dress that was just standing there...and old lady walking by...

I don't know...maybe those are isolated cases but there's just so many.

Oh I'm sure the riot police are cracking heads no doubt, just look at our riots in NA the police usually do a lot of head cracking at least when its a G8 riot or similar and imo that's an extremely stupid move it's just going to create support for the opposition even if the rioters try to instigate a reaction (according to bbc) the riot police shouldn't be taking the bait imo they should just try to contain and disperse or apprehend as peacefully as possible since everything they do is going to be used against them

BBC News - Turkey Deputy PM Arinc says initial protests 'just'

Turkey Deputy PM Arinc says initial protests 'just'
Breaking news

The original protests over the redevelopment of an Istanbul park were "just and legitimate", Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc has said.

He has apologised to those who were injured in the clashes because of their environmental concerns.

The protests have since escalated into five days of unrest in Istanbul, the capital Ankara, and other cities across Turkey.

One union federation has begun a two-day strike in support of the protests.

Mr Arinc, speaking at a news conference in Ankara, also offered to meet the organisers of the protests against the Gezi Park redevelopment.
