saw a blue Peugeot 406 drove by Hasting & Semour today...

the blue 406 has german plates on both front and back.... are you even allowed to drive that in Vancouver?

EuroTRASH 03-05-2003 09:40 PM

German plates? When I saw it, it had French plates...well they look the same I guess haha. That dude moved here and brought the car with him...as for driving it with european plates and insurance, i'm not sure how allowed that is. Nice car eh?

EuroTRASH 03-05-2003 10:51 PM

as far as i know, you can bring a car with you because it's considered a "personal effect". i'm not 100% sure how it works but i do think there are some rules of some sort, but there's no 15 year rule or anything like that. I've seen an RHD Primera Wagon here too so i guess which side the steering wheel is on doesn't matter.

true enough...but then many of them don't take up residence here...there must be rules of some sort and i think customs and immigration are more lenient to european cars for some reason

foreign tourists are allowed to temporary import their vehicle for use on canadian roads for either 6 month or one year, i don't remember which. they are allowed to drive with the license place from country of origin as long as it is in roman alphabets and numerals, and have proper insurance. at the end of that time period the car will have to be exported

if mister 406 immigrated here for good he is technically not allowed to drive that car because 1) he is immigrating, not visiting and 2) since he is importing, that car is less than 15 years old and therefore inadmissable

as for diplomatic personnels, they are allowed to have their own car here must like the tourists, but they probably get a longer time period, perhaps for the duration of their tour of duty in canada

docomo 03-07-2003 07:58 PM

I'm pretty sure that guy is not just any normal immigrant. He's an ambassador allowing him special privileges to bring his car over. Just like when the president of the US visits other countries. He brings his own bulletproof limo with him.

As others have said, if it were open to every immigrant, u'd see skylines and evos roaming the streets as we speak... :)

but why don't he use a consulate plate?

docomo 03-07-2003 11:53 PM

He may have more than one car... :D

if it's french it would be yellow instead of white i think...

talked to a mechanic who was doing a VI on a someone's car today and i asked him about it... he says the owner would be insured by a company of whatever country he is from for international usage. he things that transport canada allows only 3 months entry visa.
