So today is kind of the unofficial last day of work before the new year rolls in. My manager started out with a cheerful holiday greeting, and many within the team replied with similar greetings as well.

Normally, I'm the old school type when it comes to Christmas greetings, and I generally send my out (at work) wishing other colleagues a "merry Christmas" or something similar. While only some would reply back with a similar Christmas-specific greeting, while others may or may not reply with something along the lines of "happy holidays", I have never received any flak for wishing people a "merry Christmas".

But this year, it feels like the vibe to deliberately avoid mentioning "Christmas" is stronger than usual. Furthermore, I know that some colleagues in the team have had family members passed away this past year, and it felt like I'd be rubbing salt into their wounds if I were to including a greeting (to everyone in the team) to enjoy the Christmas holidays with their families.

Gosh... why does this have to be so difficult, when all I want is a courteous seasonal greeting?

life goes on, just say it. saying “team” is whats offensive to me. its management speak so that working employees think they are more than what they are. i promise you though, push cones to shove and your “team” will throw you under the bus in two seconds.

Life goes on, yes, but there could potentially be consequences if you say the wrong thing, or something that could be mis-interpreted. Years ago when I was still young and naive, I made the mistake of discussing published company policy with another coworker, and she filed a complain on me at HR, alleging that I was threatening to get her fired. It lead to an HR investigation, and fortunately, both the HR person dealing with the complaint as well as my manager at the time sided with me instead of the overly sensitive coworker.

I mostly look at the term "team" as an organizational unit, instead of a relational / friendship based grouping. So I am not attaching any particular personal feelings to it. (At least, I don't think I am.) I'd say I do have a close-knitted team that are friendly to each other, and work well together. Many of us have been there for quite some time, so we know each others' temperments and such. It has been really fortunate that I can't recall the last time when one colleague had thrown someone else under the bus to save his own a$$. That said, if you screwed up, nobody will step in to cover for you either.

If someone says, 'Merry Christmas' to you and it means something to them and nothing to you, then just see it as that and pretend you heard, 'Happy Holidays.' No, they didn't mean to shove Christian idealogy onto you. Don't get your panties all wrung up for nothing. It's a pluralistic society, it means something to some and nothing to others.

If someone says, 'Happy Holidays' to you and you really value Christmas, then do the reverse. Pretend you heard, 'Merry Christmas' and wish each other the best as the year ends.

Why are pages and policies being written about something so trivial? Aren't there bigger things in the world to be concerned about??!!

I know quite a few people who had a rough 2025. Lot of it coming down to economic and financial uncertainty. That said, they're all pretty upbeat this time of year. They'll probably resume their anxiety in January but this is their vacation period now and they're fully embracing it.

If someone gets offended because I say merry Christmas, that's a them problem since I'm well-wishing with good intentions. Going around being angry about everything, everywhere never leads to a prolonged healthy existence.
