After applying for the AirForce, they have yet to call me on my aptitude testing. Anyways, because the recruiter at the Airforce told me that army, navy and airforce all share the same military training, i was wondering if anybody could provide me with a few more specific details when you get shipped off to BMQ.

1.Is there any training or exercise where it involves heights?
I can't stand heights but i mean if its not extreme or anything, of course i can tuff it out.

2.There any training or exercise involving swimming?

3.Do they expect every member to run the full 8k at the end of the course without any walk breaks in between the 8k run??

Thx in advance.

airforce? regular force or reserve? im guessing regularforce.. since we dont really have reserve airforce here in BC...

reg force is a bit different than reserves. but if you read the past few pages you'll get all the answers too.

from what i know, no, there are no "heights".. maybe u might have to scale a wall that's like 10 feet high. nothing crazy like a building.

no swimming. u might have to walk through some deep puddles though

i did not have to run 8k at the end of my course, but im sure there were times where we ran close to 8k non stop. i mean we run for like 45min straight, im sure there's at least once we've ran 10k.

they build you up. they dont just expect you to beable to do it. there are a lotta unfit people that join. you start from the basics.

you'll do some strength training, circuit training, and of course, running.

^^ Yeah i forgot to clarify that its Air Force Reserve. They do have a reserve unit in abbotsford.

about the heights, thats a huge relief, I hate that sheyeight.

And regarding swimming, I saw a thread on the army.ca forums saying theres a mandatory swimming test that takes place on the first week. (apparently from members that have gone through this process)

finally, with running im building up my lungs to handle tha heat im gonna face. Better to be safe then sorry.

Thanks Ulic, youre always of great help.

NP

yeah, i also heard before my BMQ that we had to swim. err yeah that never happens, ive yet to meet anyone who's had to swim.

but you know, on the civilian side of things, you should learn how to swim anyways, it's fun.

yeah running, they'll build you up, and heights. nah, there's no heights.

BMQ is the same for army navy and airforce.. or so they say, but im sure they make little slight adjustments, especially if all the candidates on the course are from one element (ie. a BMQ full of airforce types).

yeah, i keep forgetting abbotsford has an airforce reserve base , abbotsford is kinda far out there haha.

the only questions i remember them asking me were

"have you ever used drugs? (something like that)"
"uhh, does aspirin count?"
"well, here's a list, look over it and maybe it will refresh your memory" *hand's be a nicely laminated sheet listing every imaginable illegal drug possible*
"no"

what else did they ask.. oh yeah
something about racism, and homo stuff. like if a homo was checking you out, how would you deal with it? he kinda gave me multiple choice, like if i would punch him out, talk to him about it or whatever. then he said if he persisted what i would do. pretty simple straight forward stuff.

btw, if you have like, dyed pink hair and like.. you look like some street punk or hippy, i'd suggest you change your look before your interview. they dont look highly on.. umm, individualism? i don't know the word. ie. a face full of metal, a really fucked up haircut or hair color, weird ass objects implanted in your face. shit like that. i also suggest you have a clean shave, and no choppers. and by choppers i mean huge sideburns. technically you could do that stuff, but hey, lets be realistic.

for the medical test, it's pretty straight forward. u get locked in this sound proof cabinate thing haha.. and whenever u hear a beep u click the button. for your eye test, u look at letters and read them. they get smaller and stuff.
then you strip down to your underwear and the doctor there uses his hearing enhancing round thingie and listens to your heart beat, your breathing..etc. looks for scars and abnormal markings on your body, like.. i duno rashes and needle marks hah. asks you about them.

for physical test, they make u do some situps, some pushups, and a grip test. then a step test (which is supposed to simulate 2.4k run). that's all they did for me.

for written tests.. uhh.. yeah.. i dont really remember, but it gets increasingly hard.
the examples i got were
slow is to slug
fast is to ____
a) speakers
b) speedy
c) ferious
d) wheel

shit liek that. i thought it was gonna be so easy. but it gets pretty hard. the vocab increases to a point where i almost didnt know any of the words. but dont worry. any normal person should beable to pass it.

then they have shape stuff.. like.. a shape thats unwrapped and you have to figure out what it would look like if it was put together. they also have some simple math questions

dont worry. u get scrap paper and stuff. like i said, if you passed grd 8, you should beable to pass this test. i know people that cant read that are in, i dont know how they got in but yeah those identifying the shapes and stuff are pretty hard. i suggest u make use of the scrap paper. either draw it out, or rip paper out and try to reconstruct the shape. do whatever you can. but that's more for advanced positions like pilots.

anyways good luck. it's not that hard as long as you have all your limbs, and half a brain, you'll get in.
for the physical.. ill go into a bit more details.. although they shoulda told u what they expected already.

like i said, X amount of situps in X amoutn of time, do as many pushups as u can, they have a minimum but u keep going till u cant.
a grip test, and a step test that simulates the 2.4k run.

that was it for the physical... of course the standards are different for males and females. its pretty easy to pass unless you are VERY VERY unfit.

join the infantry and you have to swim. Have to do it for your BIQ course because we do assualt boats. It isent super hard though it is done in full combats which can make it challenging.

Depends... on your rank. and if you're going away doing the training straight (like 1 or 2 months straight) or if the training is split up into weekends.

Class A and Class B training. i've explained the pay rates beforehand in another post.

it depends on your rank, and how long you've been that rank for.
pay goes by day, 24/7 if you're away doing straight training. or by day or half day if you're doing part time training.

going away not only has the benifit of getting paid even on weekends when you don't work, but you get tax free allowance each day. i think its something like 19 bucks. and of course the free lodging and food etc.

Got a question fo ya.

So I'm still in highschool but ill be gradding. I'm interested in studying psychology for post-secondary maybe at Cap or UBC or something. I just attended an RMC (Royal Military Conference) seminar and they explained most of the things you just said. Will the reserve help with my tuition fees and other fees?

I was planning to join the reserve in the infantry but with my bad eyes and all it might not be a good idea. So, i might follow your footsteps and be a driver LOL. What do you think?

OH and btw how can i get into Class B contract?

Last question LOL! Say that Canada decides to join a war or something. Am I required to go oversees and fight? or is it voluntary?
All that stuff has been explained before but.. yeah ill answer em again

the reserves has a program where you get 50% tuition back or 2000 dollars per year, whichever is lower, up to a total of 8000 bucks. you have to apply for it through your chain of command and have BMQ completed. and it has to be towards a degree, cant be a bcit thing, unless it is related to your military trade (of course this might of changed, they keep changing it)

bad eyes will limit your trades. if you're eyes are SUPER bad, you might not even beable to be a driver. but don't worry there are other trades, and everyone learns how to drive anyways you just wont be driving ALL the time. it depends what you like doing.

no... in 2001 canada went to war. they went to afghanistan and only the reg force go. even if i wanted to go, i wouldnt be allowed to go.

now 2006, afghanistan has been "deemed" safe enough for reservists to go. it's more of a humanitarian mission now than war. reservists can APPLY to go, but you might not get to, due to the competition and if there is any position open for your rank and trade.

but remember you are a reservist, and it is the militia, if some shit happens in canada, you could be called to assist, within canada of course.

class B.. heh, you ask for it, and apply through your chain of command, and if there is a position at your unit or another unit, or somewhere in canada, and they deem you fit enough to fulfill the position, then you will get it.

HAHAh yeah, at first the vocab i was like.. .jeez im not in grade 1 anymore.. then a few pages later i was like.. ok i'm not some like english freak. i couldnt understand HALF the words they were using. more than half. i just ended up guessing so much.

some of the shapes were hard. but i ended up just using scrap paper and drawing it out n stuff they didnt seem to mind.

yeah the math is simple. if you've been through highschool it should be no problem.
