Whats the difference between a receiver and an amplifier? Both hook up to audio sources right?

dub.dub 04-05-2005 03:32 PM

do all receivers have a am/fm and amplifier in them?

There are two types of recievers - stereo and multichannel. Both can switch from different sources and of course, tune in to radio.

Amps, there are lots of different types...mutichannel amps, monoblocks, stereo amps and integrated amps.

Pure amps are just an amplifier with no other inputs. You need a pre-amp to power it and control the volume.

Integrated amps can switch between multiple sourcs and usually can only drive 2 channels, although some can drive 4.. I have yet to see one that can drive 5. Of cousre.. no radio.

/me cralws back to his corner

MikesJo 04-05-2005 08:40 PM

Ohh ok. So i guess I have a pre-amp and then an amp. lol. And yea no tuner. They're just huge chunks of metal!! With light bulbs, haha.

So even if you had a receiver, some people whould still get a pre-amp and an amp to go with it? What's the point of the receiver then other than to tune into radio?

yes, some have larger amps than others but big or small it needs an amp to make sound. A "tuner" would require a separate amp though.
