FAQ: Nitrous Oxide Systems

taken from http://www.island.net/~cihp/

This method of adding extra horsepower on demand is commonly found in drag racing vehicles and motorhomes. Nitrous oxide gas is injected into the engine intake system for short term increases in power off the starting line or when pulling up a steep hill.

The system is not regulated by the Motor Vehicle Act and Regulations or by the standards used at Designated Inspection Facilities. The only restriction is in the use of the storage cylinder. Refill depots will refuse to fill a cylinder that has passed the five year tank certification period.

The danger here comes from not religiously following the manufacturers instructions for the installation and use of the system. Severe engine damage may result in only a matter of seconds when nitrous is not properly installed and operated.

The nitrous oxide used is adulterated by sulfur dioxide to prevent its abuse by inhaling. This gas causes severe nausea when inhaled, and the storage tank must be properly vented to the exterior of the vehicle using the braided lines specified in the installation instructions

Bumping an old thread. The link is dead.

Has this changed? Are nitrous oxide systems still legal for use in BC?

I know, speeding is still illegal

Yes, I took that site down in 2005 when I retired from policing. I couldn't get anyone to take it over.

Currently, the light vehicle section of the Inspection Manual says:

j) additional fuel system (nitrous oxide type or equivalent)

j) reject if installed or equipped or not of approved type for use on highway

I find it confusing. It says reject if installed or equipped or reject if not of approved type for use on highway. The first part says "reject them all" and the second part says "reject if not approved." Seems that this effectively says not legal to install on light vehicles used on the highway to me, but I will inquire. MOTI may or may not answer. Their use of e-mail sucks.

So, it might pass inspection.. or it might not, if it's not of the approved type for use on highways. Fun!

So that would mean, in essence, it's not illegal? I know it was not regulated by the MVA before. Has it been added?

Last time I had dealings with standards they put me onto Marty S. at your local weigh scales. I ended up telling him what I needed. Always wanted to tell my old boss I was right and not him. Now we're both retired it's OK.

The nice people at Vehicle Inspections and Standards say that the inspection manual is not worded well. Nitrous can be installed in an on road vehicle if the system is manufactured for on-highway use and installed according to the manufacturer's instructions.
