Well brought up from the dead.. but looks like yday! someone was hit by the skytrain at Joyce.

I was there and it was messed up.

g.f and the guy walking he trips and falls.. can't get back up and train is coming... HIT and next thing you know the body is in the middle section of the whole skytrain.

Joyce was shut down for a few hours. I had class to and had to miss it. The place was gated down with dons of rescue trucks.

Messed up stuff. Surprised it never made it on tv. Guess translink wants to cover it up.

No offense, but they NEED to add rails to the side. I swear when it's packed at some stations and idiots are pushing others to get to the corners or what not. It's pretty dangerous and they don't care either.

I felt the aftershock of that all the way at Burrard station around 6pm.. trains were halted across the board. Hope he's ok.

When you say the body is in middle section of the skytrain, do you mean his body went under the skytrain???

Well they tried to save him. I don't know if he was alive for a certain time period or not. I do know after they took apart the skytrain from the middle and took him to the hospital they operated on him. But he didn't make it through the operation.

Basically he was UNDER the skytrain but in the middle of it. So they had a really hard time getting to him. I think they ripped out half of the edge paneling and then disconnected the skytrain middle compartments and then got him out. Took at least 2-3 hrs.. I would have been shocked if he survived that long.

I thought he died, because after an hour 2 out of 3 ambulances left. I almost got the feel from their faces like he was dead and they were just trying to get his body out so they can run the system again.

agreed

Burrard and Granville scare the crap out of me when I'm waiting for the train to go home during rush hour.
If there's a delay for whatever reason, even if it's just 10 minutes, the station gets PACKED and if you're standing at the front of the crowd near the edge of the platform you can't help but think about what happens if someone pushes you.

many skytrain stations really need to enforce railings especially when skytrain's are unmanned. I've seen a few times where people trip and fall really close to the edge because they were running towards the train,,, like on Bridgeport station and Science World. + there are always crazy people there so you never know what they will do.

RIP to the guy, must be a traumatic event the GF and witnesses to deal with.

train and subway stations in some China/Japan areas have glass screens that cover the entire platform and only slides open when a train arrives and stops. Too costly to do that over here?

it's been said many times on here that the trains carts are different sizes..thus they cannot make safety doors that can fit all...which is really sad because someone dies from this every now and then.

That doesn't seem like a hard obstacle to overcome though. Just make the sliding glass door as large as the biggest door on any train.

It seems like more an issue of cost

it's not the size of the door, it's the placement of the door.

Anyways, I don't think it's that big an issue. Most other cities in NA and Europe don't have doors on their platforms - and their ridership is waaaay higher than our system, and they're still fine. London has 1 station with doors that I've seen, but all other stations are just fine.

plus, we have automatic systems that will stop the train - which is much better than the drivers that stop the train, so it cuts down on accidents as it is.

true. but at least they can invest in some cheap rails. cheap safety precautions are better than none at all. :/

It would be costly to put them in every station. I've seen them in a few airport trains/trams such as Seattle and CDG in Paris.

I disagree with the gates and walls or whatever shit people are posting.
There's a yellow strip on the edge, meaning not to walk there.
And common sense would tell anyone that just because the yellow is only 1 foot away from the edge, it doesn't mean to literally stand RIGHT behind the yellow.

If you feel unsafe standing so close to the edge, then it's probably common sense telling you to back the fuck up.

When I'm taking the skytrain, I'm well into the platform. If someone was running and bumped into me and knocked me down, I would still be well on the platform. Point is, when the skytrain comes, it comes, and then you can walk into it. There's absolutely no reason to be standing so close.

In this situation, I don't know why "bf" is walking so close to the edge, especially when a train is coming.

I feel sad for this incident, but really, I cannot think of anything Translink needs or should do. It's almost as silly as someone waiting to cross
the street, and he's standing/walking by the curb and trips and falls, and a car hits him. Must we make safety gates/walls on all the sidewalks too now for all the people that don't know how to stand back?

You forget to keep in mind that most people are stupid and they're it seems to me that young kids are getting dumber and dumber as time goes by. Secondly, having people die on the sky train tracks slows everything down proving it to be inefficient in comparison to those with glass walls/gates.

Also, for those who complain about money being the issue WTF are the goddamn turnstiles? They should have put those things in during expo so that everyone has to pay. Heck, it would still work out well if they just put in turnstiles - then they wouldn't need as much security staff.

if u read the posts, some reasons are pretty valid. some stations can get REALLY PACKED as someone has stated and a guardrail can be really helpful since alot of people are gonna be bumping into each other. and in a packed station + packed train u might miss the train (too full) if ur well inside the platform and lots of other people are ahead of you. and the guy probably felt safe hence he was near that distance; but the thing is he tripped and the yellow line didnt save him fast enough.

oh and i think guardrails wont work either cuz train sizes are different... unless guardrails disappear(go down into the ground so smthing) when train approachs.

not everybody understands the hazards at a skytrain station. Take children for example. Of course it would be careless not to hold on to your kids at a skytrain station, but accidents happen.
