Senna, those pictures are amazing! Especially the second and third ones!

Nice kit, Hasselblad, Phase One, and Canon 7D! Geez!

Thanks! I've always wanted to shoot that park bench shot with a decent camera. I've shot it with my old 6MP DSLR, my 21MP 5DmkII and now the 40 MP Phase One and also with a 4x5 large format camera, which didn't work out well.

Your photos are a great starting place, better than my first pictures, but have some room for improvement simply by keeping in mind some fundamental photography basics.

#1) Photos should always have an level horizon unless there is specific reason not to, in which case it should be clear that there is a reason and intention to having it skewed.

#2) Auto-white balance is pretty hit and miss, especially on night photos, manually setting white balance or shooting in RAW so you can adjust in later is a good bet.

Finally... if those are handheld, they are not too bad, but for night photography, a tripod or some stable mount is essential. A good rule of thumb is without image stabilization, you should only handhold to a minimum of 1/focal length. You were shooting 1/3 second at 18mm which is pretty tough to handhold, you could either bump the ISO to get the shutter speed up if you absolutely have to handhold, or hardmount the camera.

Good luck,
Mark

You probably could've gotten away with more exposure too. Check out the similar photo on jacksonzhao.com on his main page to see what I mean.

Ditto on the MUST for a tripod.
