.: Photo Lab Daily Showcase :.

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the Photo Lab's Snapshot of the Day thread Mrk 2: The Daily Showcase

In this new and evolved thread, you are given the opportunity to share your best image of the day. Instead of displaying mere "snapshots," you are encouraged to showcase your finest work and allow the rest of us to pick it apart.

The purpose is to maintain a constant surge of visual appeal in the forum, and encourage constructive dialogue on the images.

The only rule is that you should not exceed posting three pictures per day (if you would like to share more, you are encouraged to start a new thread). The reason we will be enforcing this rule is because we are here to share and learn, not compete. Please critique accordingly and appropriately.

To start us off, here is a shot of the London Eye:

let the posting begin.

Cheers,
~S

Nice photo Salar, I am always in awe at your ability to work with color. Things always look surreal. Very cool.

That London Eye pic almost looks like a false colour IR image.

Here's mine carried over from the thread that hath passed.

As with all great photos, this one captures the moment really well.

I like the subtle use of colour as well.

^^ Nice concept, but I think it would have been better shot at a lower level, and if it werent overexposed. I'm surprized you were able to get him that close

Wow, that guys a real porker

Here's a shot that I took a couple of days ago... I really like the concept, but I don't know what post-processing steps to take to really get that dramatic effect out of it. I've noticed with some of your (and by 'your' I don't mean just Jason) other shots, that you either have to have the shadows or the highlights blown out to get that effect. Like Dennis' wedding shots, Majin's water shot, or several of Salar's photos.

This is an area that I need a lot of help with, so your wisdom please.

Thanks for the comment, Len. I was forced to either overexpose the hands or underexpose the squirrel. I could've gone with a really low angle but instead went really high.

Here's a low one if you're interested:

One word: CURVES.

I think Dennis and Salar swears by it.

I'm more of a Levels guy...sometimes I use Curves.

Acuracura, I really like the second one there.

Levitron: Do you use mainly curves and levels, or do you do other things that would require the mouse too... like the burn tool and all that jazz?

Get your exposure right when you take the picture. Then you don't have to waste time on post processing.

I know... but at that point I still wasn't sure what kind of effect I wanted to get out of the picture, so I just exposed to get as much as I could looking alight, so I could edit later.

Curves and Levels to correct exposure and to enhance contrast.

Usually I will also use Burning and Dodging to highlight areas that I need to emphasize or correct.

However, in the photo that you took, the background (the sky) and the foreground (the rundown building) do not mix. It is simply impossible to expose for both the background as well as the foreground since one is so much brighter than the other. There are a few ways around this...one is to use RAW and take one shot only and use Layers to make two exposures; the second is to do two shots: one exposed for the foreground and one exposed for the background then blended together with Layers.

Sorry, it wasn't a good explanation....

Also forgot to add, have you tried to convert that shot to black and white? Might be a good experiment. After you desaturate it, boost contrast a little and you might like the shot a lot better.
