im pretty shure he can drive wherever he wants with it as long as its not for driving to or from work/school everyday, don't you think that it would be pretty freaking stupid if they wito'd places that you could go with your own damn car?

Gigarange 12-17-2006 10:28 PM

used to be that way, must have changed...I haven't paid attention for awhile. I know that when my dad had something happen to one of his Camaro's downtown ICBC wouldn't fix it because he wasn't supposed to be downtown with it in the first place.

From ICBC's website
Vehicles with collector plates are restricted to pleasure use only.

For most vehicles, insuring for pleasure use usually extends the insurance coverage for occasional travel to work or school. With collector vehicles, however, you may never drive to work or school.

it gets even worse for Vintage plates.

sixthgear 12-19-2006 03:10 PM

What is the bolt pattern on those old bugs. I may have some wheels for it that you may (or may not) like. Keeping with the vintage look. PM me if you are interested.

m1ataman 12-19-2006 04:38 PM

I think that I'll end up repainting or powder coating the stock rims to get the collector plate status. I don't think these ever had a nice set of rims from the factory. 15 X 4.5" with a 4 bolt (130 mm). Even the Sport Bugs of the day had pretty fugly rims.

NashMan 12-27-2006 04:56 AM

well we have a bunch of thosu at work there pretty striped but there still a bunch of stuff letf on them

m1ataman 03-28-2007 08:37 PM

Well as you can see, the bug is stipped down and almost ready for paint. The doors are stripped out and ready to be removed for paint and the windows still need to be removed before it goes away for the bodywork. The fenders, hood, and rear engine cover have already gone to the bodyshop. It looks pretty funny all stripped down eh?

nice to see the old buggy getting some progress. keep it up!!!

m1ataman 03-29-2007 05:54 AM

I think I'd have a little trouble getting collector plates with that. But I wonder where Subaru got the idea for their engine??? :p

dustinb 03-29-2007 07:32 AM

Are you painting it the same colour Cornel?

m1ataman 03-29-2007 08:33 AM

Yeah, original stock colour. That light blue was one of my favourites when these cars were new anyway and it has to be a stock colour for collector plates.

dustinb 03-29-2007 09:26 AM

That's what I thought. But could you have painted it a different color that was offered for the same year, or do they check your vin code number to verify body paint?

sixthgear 03-29-2007 10:46 AM

Just to check....you are not going to use this as a daily driver (ie. taking it to work or something) are you? Collector plates do not cover that type of driving.

Your paint only have to be stock appearing, as in no primer. I would pick a colour from that era however to make sure it is not questionable.

See the application form for more information.

No, this car is our 3rd vehicle and won't ever need to take me to work. It'll be the "toy" and I really want the cheap insurance of collector plates. I think it's a better investment in nearly stock condition too as they get more and more rare. Collector status does allow custom wheels that are "era correct" so it'll be getting some 8 spoke Enkei style wheels as probably it's only custom touch.

You will require some documentation for the wheels to show they are period correct. I would suggest you put them on after you get the plates just to make your life easier.

hud 91gt 03-29-2007 03:15 PM

How are the floorpans? Since you are painting already I suppose they are alright?

I really want to get my hands on one of these before they are all rust bckets. I just have to here to store the damn thing for 10 years until I get a chance to work on it :p

I found this picture I took on the way home from volksfest last year, some inspiration for you cornel!

That's a 1965. I had a '64 from 72-75.

m1ataman 09-03-2007 02:24 PM

Well, I haven't had much to report on this project for a while but now she's completely stripped and ready for paint. I stripped out the seats and carpets today as well as removed the glass. This is the first vehicle I've ever had painted so I'm getting kind of excited. It looks like I'll be a little high on spray glue getting the new headliner and carpets in.

The seats, carpets, and door panels are all going back in black instead of the original ugly grey. Woo-hoo! Anybody out there with upholstery experience? I have all the seat coverings and foam padding ready to go as well as a hog ring tool and hog rings.

Looking good. Who is going to paint it?

m1ataman 09-03-2007 05:10 PM

A friend of a friend is going to paint it for me. He does the prep work at his place then rents a spray booth. Is $2000 a good deal?

NashMan 09-05-2007 09:21 PM

depends on teh jopb there big gunner

m1ataman 07-10-2008 07:11 PM

Well, it's been a long time coming but I finally have some progress to report on the Bug. Yesterday it went away for paint. Hopefully it'll be done in a week or so. Then I'll be one busy boy putting everything back together. Here's a shot of the dash cover I picked up on eBay. It just glues with silicone right over the old messed up dash.

And here's a couple of pics of the stripped shell as it was shipped off for painting with the donor hood and rear deck lid.

I was really hoping I could have it together in time for Volksfest this weekend but no such luck. I'll be down at Gyro Park Sunday checking everyone else's VW's instead. :(
