Nice! I'll be sure to make it out to whichever event you unveil it at. |
Nice work Cornell. Just found this for you; a list of ICBC acceptable modifications that you can do, and still be eligible for Collector Plates. :) http://icbc.com/insurance/pdf/approv...parts_list.pdf |
Thanks Andy but I've given up on the collector plates as they're just too restrictive. As you can see above I've already got a 12-1/2" steering wheel in there, the windows are all tinted and waiting to be installed after the headliner gets done, and I'm putting a nice sound system in. I couldn't live with just an AM radio. I've also got a new set of Empi 8 spoke wheels. Eventually, it sure could use about a 2" lowering job. |
Well, I never would have guessed this project would take so long. Now that I've found a bodyman who knows how to get things done it's making progress again. How's that for minimal rust- both lower inner front fenders, both sides next to the lower rear window, and a bit behind the left running board. It should be pretty blue in the next month or so! http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...024_medium.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...028_medium.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...029_medium.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...030_medium.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...026_medium.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...027_medium.jpg |
Lookin great. Should be ready for some summer fun eh? |
Well, it's coming along nicely now. First it got a coat of epoxee sealer primer and then a first coat of primer to be block sanded. It should be getting the final paint next Saturday. :) http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...031_medium.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...032_medium.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...033_medium.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...034_medium.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...035_medium.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...036_medium.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...037_medium.jpg |
Awsome! The green looks really good too! If you are interested in coils, ive heard ones for tiburon ones can be modded to work |
lookin good cornell! :) |
Paint is done and she's coming home tomorrow morning. I'm like a little kid at Christmas. Guess how long those rims will stay on? http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...044_medium.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...045_medium.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...046_medium.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...047_medium.jpg |

Well, my bug is looking pretty much finished and I'm pretty happy with the way it's turned out. Amazingly enough it runs pretty well and I'm sure it'll only improve now that it's finally getting driven again after 2-1/2 years of sitting. Stock is boring so I've added a few custom touches to make it mine. The wheels are Empi 8 spokes, and taillights are custom flush mounts, front signals are clear, windows are tinted, and the headlight rings are painted to match the car. The interior is all in and beautiful in black. http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...0048_large.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...0049_large.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...0050_large.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...0051_large.jpg |
Damn that brings back memories! Nice job Cornel! Love the Empi's! |
Looks absolutely great Cornell! Now, lets shove a bigger motor in it :D |
Thanks guys. It's funny how almost everyone who sees the bug has a bug experience to share. For now it seems to be running fine with the original running gear (it doesn't even slow down on 4 Mile hill in 3rd. gear) but if I manage to scrounge some more funds I can see an engine rebuild as a winter project for some extra oomph! For now I'm broke and happy to just be driving the darned thing. |
Awesome! Looks great! |
nice nice |
Well, it's been running like crap but I'd hoped I'd get to next winter before engine rebuilding. No such luck. Intake valve guide for #1 cylinder is moving in the head so the valve can't close properly, no wonder power is weak with only 3 cylinders working. New heads, cylinders, piston rings & clutch are ordered and beetle is now 4 bolts away from an enginectomy. I'll have to take some pics as I go. Unfortunately my Honda VTR1000F is now for sale to pay for all this. :( |
your selling your bike it sucks when you have to choose |
It's not so bad, I pretty much bought the bike as an investment because the price was right so it was temporary anyway. Now I'll have the Beetle to play with instead. |
you should drop a porsche motor in it so it has some testies |
Sorry to disappoint you Ryan but I kept it a stock 1600. Scott helped me install the new cylinder heads, cylinders, pistons, rings, wrist pins, & rocker assemblies. Amazingly after 78,000 miles the original pistons and cylinders looked like new, it was almost a shame to change them. While it was out I got busy painting up all that grungy looking 35 year old cooling tin. It also got a new Pertronic electronic ignition in a new vacuum advance distributor, a new carb, and a Pertronic Flamethrower chrome coil. It runs a lot better now that all 4 cylinders are working! It also got a new ceramic coated muffler and heater boxes. Air cooled 48 HP goodness. http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...0052_large.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...0053_large.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...0055_large.jpg http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...0054_large.jpg |
come one now, the 1600 is into the 50's Watch out for the ceramic coated stuff rusting. Buddy bought s empi header/phat boy exhaust and the thing started to rust on him in the first few months |
I hope mine will be okay. It's the Dansk(sp?) stuff with ceramic coating added from CIP1. |
the spark plugs wire's look to be thicker then your connecting rods |
Well, I guess this is pretty much the end of this progress thread as she's pretty much finished. See you all around at some of the car shows. I'll be at Volksfest VW Show & Shine July 12th at Gyro Park if any of you folks are into VW's. I'm sure happy with the way it turned out. Old VW's have got to be the absolute easiest restoration as so much is still available CHEAP from Mexico and Brazil. |
