Mercedes Problem - W202 C220 speedometer malfunction

Ok here's question number 2 specific to my car:

my 1995 MB C class speedometer reads 0 all the time. The odometer does not advance. ABS light is on. The gears are changing fine however.

which is not similar to other threads I found on Mercedesshop website.... those people who have pooched a speed sensor seems to have all my symptoms but they also have trouble shifting (the gearbox doesn't know when to shift and whether to shift at all).

which makes me wonder - did my gauge pooch out on me or the sensor did?

how likely is it that a 1995 car gauge cluster pooched its speedometer and odometer functions AT THE SAME TIME?

yet if it's a gauge problem I don't think that would trigger my ABS system to act up so I'm more inclined to thinking there is a vehicle speed sensor issue....

what do you experts think?

Is there a more scientific way to troubleshoot than to throw parts at it? (MB parts are freaking expensive you know) My friend says the OBDI connector isn't capable of reading vehicle speed so you can't really tell from there.

Here is another issue linked to this one:
How to remove my vehicle speed sensor? W202 C220.

so I just clamp the multimeter on 2 prongs on the sensor?

Is the sensor generating the sine wave or does the sensor need a power supply in order to generate it?

yea you "T" into it. if it's 2 wires it's generating it's own voltage (AC pulse generator) If it's 3 or 4 it probally has a referance voltage from the ecm.
