kinda off topic; i know tattoos are exactly pain free, but how much does it really hurt?
im thinking of getting one done in the near future from the middle of my shoulder blade on the back, wrapped around to my deltoids to a half sleeve.

Tire Biter: Any decent tattoo artist will tell you no straight off the bat. The spine is a VERY dangerous place to get a tattoo done. One slip, the needle goes too deep and you're right fucked. I would choose somewhere else if I were you.
Nvasion: I'm not sure how much it would hurt, each part of the body hurts differently. The way I was taught, was if there's a lot of muscle or fat, it shouldn't hurt as much as getting it done somewhere with less muscle/fat and more bone.

is it comparable to the big shot they give you before stitching you up at a hospital?
i wanna know how much it hurts before deciding on a design.
one of my friend said it felt like someone holding a lighter up to your skin for like 8secs or something, but i think hes full of shit.
but at the same time, a few of my girl friends got tattoos... so how much can it really hurt?
would popping a handful of painkillers and smoking a few joints help before going in?...im seriously asking...maybe not the handful of painkillers, but like 4 or something?

The pain factor is also different for everyone. FOr me personally I have 4 really big tattoos. 1 on both arms, 1 chest piece, and 1 on my thigh. All of them took atleast 6 hours or so. Arms didn't hurt as that is a common part to not hurt anyways. My thigh were like my arms. Chest I had heard was one of the more uncomfortable parts and had a couple friends who didn't like it much but for me personally it didn't hurt either. It felt just the same as my arms. So it really just depends on the person. Out of the 20+ hours I have on my body there were probably only about an hour or so of uncomfiness and that was rite by the arm pit. Its hella sensative there but even then it wasn't bad to the point where im crenching my teeth or wishing i wasn't there. I enjoy the feeling of getting tattooed quite alot soooo.

ok, so like i mentioned earlier. i wanna get some tribals done with a hidden message in it somehow. do i find a tattoo parlor, book an appointment, and go in and sit down with the artist to get it designed to the way i want it?
im not really sure how it works if i dont already know what i want, or have something drawn out.
and im planning to get it done at sacred heart, because one of my friend got it done there. but it wasnt tribal though.

Lining, IMHO, is a lot more irritataing than shading and I've 2 tattoos. Pinching yourself hurts 1000x more than being tattoo'd.

For me it felt like a sunburn. it was more irritating than painful, but after a few minutes, numbness sets in and you won't feel it.
My tattoo is on my back, and goes right over my spine. In all honestly, I thought it felt quite good when my artist was doing my spine. Felt like a massage LOL
I did feel a slight burning sensation in more "fatty" areas though.
I didn't take any painkillers or anything before going in.
my next tattoo will probably hurt more; it'll be on my ribcage lol
come on..be a man. don't let me, a lil tiny chinese girl seem more manly HAHAHAHA

Which is why I said no decent tattoo artist would do it. I even talked to the guys at Next! (including the owner) and my Uncle about it when I was working there, and they all told me the same thing.
But hey, it's your body. Give it a shot if you think it's alright. Just make sure the place is absolutely spotless and you're comfortable with the artist.
