shaw hd or bell hd

I'm planning to get hd cable, but i dont know what is better? hd shaw or hd bell? which provider has more hd channels and which one is cheaper and how much is it to get the subscription?

terkan 01-27-2008 11:46 PM

i think bell HD rite now have more channels then shaw. from channel 800-852 is all HD channels. i paid close to 80bux a month with tax but that's coz i got all the chinese channels and sports package.. only downside with bell is their reception takes a beating during storms

Harvey Specter 01-28-2008 03:20 AM

I have Bell HD and I believe Bell is adding more HD channels and movies compared to Shaw. Too bad we don't have Rogers because Rogers out in Ontario has the largest selection of HD channels and HD on demand movies and programs.

willystyle 01-28-2008 04:20 AM

the funny thing is, by the time we get all these HD channels worked out (as there still are many channels that havent switched) in Canada, HD will be obsolete, and a new technology will be in the consumer market.

Shaw's current channel list: http://www.shaw.ca/en-ca/ProductsSer...hannelList.htm

16 are listed as HD.

Shaw has 24 HD channels technically but 21 of them are the most frequently viewed. They also have one PPV HD and two Sportsnet HD channels that are frequently blacked out (regional feeds).

I am a Shaw user for the fact that it was WAY easier to set up than Bell, there is no contract required and I am no longer a victim of rain fade.

Same reason I stayed with shaw.

scheng924 01-28-2008 09:46 AM

i remember back in the days when they advertised Bell ExpressVu is NOT affected by weather.. and it's the same no matter what happens and stuff...

whatever happened to that? lol

Psykopathik 01-28-2008 09:49 AM

id pick shaw as its cheaper lol

camshaft 01-12-2009 01:47 PM

was doing some searching and wanted to see if anyone else had some opinions...

Compaired to the other dish providers compaired to rogers cable digital or shaw cable

I would have to say that dish does have some issues with rain. So that is a huge thing to take into account...
But since we are in vancouver it never rains right ? lol

Hondaracer 01-12-2009 03:52 PM

Shaw all the way, although Bell has some more movie channels, they play all garbage movies, with Shaw im PVRing like a brand new movie every week and the HD is amazing for every movie they put on there

i just pvred Dirty harry and the restoration is freakin NUTS

but yea i know other ppl with bell and im really not a fan of the channel menu layout or the PVR itself, the stupid thing has a tendancy to always record a program only to the half-hour, or say if u were PVRing hockey night in Canada, the Bell PVR likes to kick out every half hour or top of the hour rather then continuning on with the entire program like u would think it would

we missed the climax of trevor lindens retirement because of bells stupid PVR..

a couple of my friends have ShawHD and all of them complain about "technical problems" with their HD feeds.

I.e. sound would disappear for seconds to minutes at a time, or image would start tearing, and they'd have to switch channels and then switch back....

Can anybody else deny/confirm this? I'm kinda in the same boat...not sure which provider to go with for HD

Hondaracer 01-12-2009 06:32 PM

those problems are almost all related to Live shows, ie. Canucks PPV etc.

occasionally i've had problems recording movies onto the shaw PVR, i've set the recordings and later when i go to watch a movie nothing happens when i press play, like the recording was corrupt or somthing

but that is a very rare occurance, i think its only happened like once maybe

other then that i cant really think of much else, occasionally the sound will "pop" and cut out for like 1-2 seconds but it's really nothing

yeah i get that too. usually its on like channels 200 ~ 203 or something. The sound just cuts out for a second then it comes back on. its kinda annoying at times.

same here, looking for HD, bell HDBOX is 299$ but you get 150$ credit back to you, so you can pay off your bills or ppv. and other deals. for shaw, they dont offer anything. $398 on site. i am with shaw for a long time and they dont offer shit atm. btw, i am just looking for a box not pvr.

StylinRed 01-13-2009 01:19 AM

Bell

CrisQo 01-13-2009 11:40 AM

bell is the way to go. and if you're cheap you can split the bill with someone else by hooking up a receiver for them on your account. instant 50% off

m3thods 01-13-2009 02:05 PM

for shaw users i can safely say i dont get any of those problems. check with a shaw technician there might be a problem with the feed going into your home.

on a side note, dont use any signal amplifiers as these will cause more problems than solve. and i must say shaw cs is much better- they replaced ALL my coaxial connections when i had a problem and they were able to get the problem fixed in a timely matter (<24 hours)

vmec 01-13-2009 02:35 PM

Shaw:

better service
no contracts
slightly cheaper

If you do not have HD equipment I'd take the plunge and get a PVR (be is Flaw Cable or Hell Sat). You can try to leverage your past history with Shaw or pick up a box on Craigslist (just be wary of non-shaw boxes and insist/verify that the shaw box that you DO pick up doesn't have any outstanding charges sitting against it).

As for the original post - I'm on Shaw. Been with them for years and have never seriously considered Bell due to contracts, cost, and the fact that Shaw also provides me with intarwebs. I have not had any major technical problems with shaw and their CS has been pretty decent to me.

I believe that Bell has more HD channels. Check your viewing habits to determine if the additional HD channels actually bring you any value. Both offer all the "big" networks in HD, and afaik both offer HD movie channels and HD Sporksnet and TSN.

Hondaracer 01-13-2009 03:18 PM

once u get a PVR you will wonder how u lived without it

twitchyzero 01-13-2009 10:14 PM

GVRD sucks...
so not HD friendly.

Jonydakiller 01-13-2009 10:37 PM

For people who has pvr with Shaw, when you hear audio drop outs, pause the show for 2 seconds and then play it, it will be fine for the rest of the show as long as you don't switch to another channel. down side is that you will be 2 seconds delayed than live feed :)

bartone 01-13-2009 10:40 PM

^ sweet ill try that!

watched the canucks game on PPV HD at my friend's house today and the audio kept cutting out.
