The AutoCAD Thread

Any AutoCAD users or draftsperson?

I'm a new to the industry myself. Hoping to see if there are any one that I can talk to or ask for help in the future. :D

Eternal_SiR 03-03-2008 07:27 AM

Google is your buddy for tutorials. Learn from experience in this field, there's no way you can just pick it up, and with the 8219472987598325 versions of it, you have to learn the right one.

That being said

first hit in google.

I use Autocad when I need to draw something that requires measurements or scale. Even though I have used it since the version 4 for DOS days, I still probably only know how to use 25% of its features.

I use Visio for everything else.

Visio is good, but I rarely use it because 1/2 my clients are too poor to go out and buy it :D

Ikkaku 03-03-2008 09:49 AM

I used it throughout highschool
R14 ftw! :lol
there were all these different versions but we kept r14

I use AutoCad 2007! I have been in the industry for 2 years now, took a one year course at BCIT :D and now I sit on my ass surfing revscene and drawing at the same time!

HAHAAH I feel you, i'm doing the same thing as we speak. We are just getting ready to deploy Autocad 2008 and Autodesk Inventor... boy does Inventor put autocad to shame and once you go with Inventor.. u'll wonder why you even use Autocad. but at $12k a seat.. not many people would spend that money.

AzNightmare 03-03-2008 11:11 AM

I know how to use it. If you have questions, you can ask or just post it in the thread.

Just wondering which course did you take at bcit? Is it the Structural CADD & Graphics Technician - Structural Option? If so, how is the work load for it?

WAAAA 12k a seat!!! haha wow now that program must be made of solid gold! or it must do all the work for you! :p

azncreationz 03-03-2008 03:40 PM

Been using Autocad for 17 years, been in the industry since early 90's. God I'm old! From release 10 all the way up to 2008. Also have used Vectorworks, Generic CADD, and have been using Solidworks for at least 5 years. And no, I would not say Solidworks pwns all...especially the 64 bit version of SW2008. Crashes quite a bit, servicepacks every couple weeks. Even our re-seller is sick of us complaining. hahaha..
Anyways, if you're good with ACAD, I may even have some work for you (if you're interested).

AdamR 03-03-2008 07:59 PM

I used to be a draftsperson. Have used Autocad versions r12 to 2002 or 2004

it does alot of the work for you.. it makes my life easier.. something that use to take me an hour in autocad now takes no more the 20mins..

Gachinto 03-04-2008 02:30 AM

I'm actually in design, but of course CAD is mandatory. Barely had any advance AutoCAD training although I'm constantly using the basics for planning purposes. I am looking into probably self-learning more stuff from books or something, like 3D. I don't know if it was just me but the AutoCAD course progressed a bit too slow for what it's worth.

I might not need that much computer background for the design field, but I'm much more of a computer guy than a drawing artist. :D I want to be able have all the skills required to do the jobs efficiently but not waste time to learn 20 softwares while I just need a few good ones.

So Inventor is WAY BETTER than any other CAD softwares, and/or 3D? It would be great to just know one that does all the jobs efficiently and nicely!

i'm afraid i can't answer because i'm in the architectural side of things... i am starting to notice that revit is becoming more commonly used. unfortunately our budget for software is so modest we're still stuck with autocad 2005 and there is no funds to go back to school for upgrades unless i pay my own way.
