The iPhone 1st Gen Thread

So this phone's been all the hype lately.
Now that its unlockable, Ive read some things that, to me, somewhat cripple the whole experience.

I read on hofo that you basically cant create/edit anything custom on the phone:

Cant create groups for contacts
Cant delete media
Cant delete contacts

Is this true?

It's not documented, but say you're in videos, slide your finger from the left to the right over the file and it'll pop up the delete button. Damn, just find out that this doesn't work for songs...haha so only half able to delete media.

Unless you count installing Mobile Finder and deleting it from the filesystem lol

yeah,
lol..i think they really really really want you to use itunes.

but having said that...this phone is all about 'eye candy', very very impressive indeed. And it's very solidly built...possibly one of the best built phones that i have ever come across...

Lets just say, if your not a fan favourite of iTunes or if iTunes runs damn slow on your computer i advice not to buy a iphone.

Very much like iPod, all the songs are synch from apple's own "unique" way. all your file names are in numbers...somewhat gibberish into separate folders, making it seemlessly impossible for computer beginners to understand how to delete them if you browse your iPod/iPhone through networking drive mode.

Agreed. For most people, it's OK, as most people are iPod lemmings already.. I just started to use iTunes after I got my iPhone, and I actually quite like it!

Cnet wrote the following in thier iPhone review:

"The bad news is that the iPhone's iPod leaves out the ability to manually manage the transfer of music and video content. Unlike any previous iPod, the iPhone does not allow an option for manually dragging and dropping content from an iTunes library directly to the iPhone device icon. Instead, the iPhone strictly uses defined library syncing options for collecting and syncing content from your iTunes library to the device. This should work out fine for most people, but for a device with limited memory the inability to manually manage content seems like a misstep"

I don't have an iPhone yet but I was wondering if this problem is true. I find it kind of insane that apple didnt allow the option of manually manage and transfer songs and video content to the iphone but only massively syncing all ur music files from ur itunes library to your phone instead.

if this is indeed true...is there a way around it?

Eh? I don't have that problem. I drag music from my iTunes library and drop it in to my iPhone. Are the people from CNET complete fools?

Best way to sync I find is to set up a playlist or a smart playlist in iTunes, like for me, "Epik High", and I set it to include all the songs from that Korean hip hop group. I choose that playlist in my iPhone sync settings and it gets synced. I don't have to sync ALL my music, but I could.

One thing that's missing from the iPhone and iPod Touch is Drive Mode, so you can't use the devices as USB drives like the other iPods. There'll probably be a third-party hack out for that soon enough, so no biggie. Besides, I'd rather plug in a $10 USB drive into some random computer rather than plugging in my $700 phone lol

So you have to make specific playlists for the iPhone with ALL the songs you want on it or else everything will be copied to the iPhone?

I'm still kinda confused about how it works

You got most of that right, except for the "or else" part. It's you have to make playlists/smart playlists then select them to sync with the iPhone or else no music gets synced to it.

Not true

Everything can be manually synced.

You can makes groups in contacts, edit adnd delete contacts.

Can't delete media, it's a ipod.

You can't create groups on the iPhone itself, you can only choose to sync selected groups of contacts in iTunes. How are you making contact groups? The only "group" you can create is the Favorites list.

You can't delete music on the iPhone, but you can delete videos. Just slide your finger over the title and up pops the red delete button. Also, after every movie that I play it asks me whether to keep or delete it...so you can get rid of videos. HOWEVER, if you don't change the sync settings before the next time you sync, iTunes will just throw the deleted videos right back on to the phone lol

another iphone question...

was thinkin of gettin my friend to get me a 4gb one if there are any left near seattle. I'm not sure if I should get the 1st gen iPhone, but the 299 price tag is quite attractive. I figure that even if they come out with a better model in the near future, the price tag would not be near 299....I haven't been reading too much into the phone, what do you guys think? I'm sold on the price tag of 299.

4GB ain't worth it I think, but it really depends on how much stuff you're going to put on it. I could fill up my 8GB no problem, but everyone's different. All my music are at least 256kbps, and I have quite a few videos (the entire Yu-Gi-Oh! the Abridged Series AHAHAHA) on there.

price tag of 299 is pretty fair i'd say.

the iphone prices are quite attractive. (of course not counting those dumb asses selling them for insane amounts) Local prices are dropping quite rapidly too...

^

i think the 299 mark will be the price for the entry model.

so say if they come out with something new in the near future, the 8gb will probably drop to 299.

Question:

I heard this around the office (basing this on the Cingular iPhone) but it is true that once the iPhone is unlocked, you have to have a Cingular SIM and have it register at least once every 3 months on Cingular's network? Otherwise, the phone will self-lock itself.

I call BS on this but wanted to ask you guys since I haven't been following much on consumer hardware lately.
