my final word is.. iphone comes out on july 11th, 2008 hahahaha

ienhz 07-02-2008 01:08 PM

lots of hofo info saying that rogers is backpeddling on the data plans. looks like we might be able to get the iphones on just a regular voice plan of $30 or more/mth now!

+Kardboard+ 07-02-2008 01:10 PM

My final word is, those iPhone stand-up banners at the Rogers stores really freak me out. I'm not sure why.

With this upgrade, won't all v1.0 owners get the new Google Maps GPS version? I know that the GPS function in the new iPhone also features GPS calculations by cellphone towers and even WiFi. Could those features be useable by the old iPhone?

nope cant. doesnt have gps

After digging around the Apple site, I confirmed that ppl w/ the first iPhone can take advantage of the GPS capabilities through the Map program on the 2.0 software. But only for cell tower and WiFi calculations.

yea even before 2.0 u can do that with teh old iphone, so u either need edge, or a wifi connection to work. just that you dont have gps. the new ones got gps so i assume you wont need edge OR wifi for it to work? just like a normal gps? i hope so... othewise the new iphone is pretty fukin bs.

Levitron 07-02-2008 10:11 PM

1st gen iPhone + GPS + 3G = new iPhone 3G.

That's pretty much it in terms of functionality.

92prelude 07-02-2008 11:32 PM

The hype on this phone is huge. Every one knows about it, and so many people want it.
What is going to give me the greatest satisfaction is seeing the look on peoples faces when they get their bill (if the whole mandatory data plan is still applicable) in the mail and realize how not-cool the iphone just became.... meanwhile I will be sitting back with my iPhone 1.0 and plain voice plan laughing away at every one who got suckered in at the low phone price :P haha.

You know some one is going to take iphone 1.0 and 2.0 apart and put the GPS antenna in the 1.0 shell. We stick with our plans, and get the benefits of GPS.

!MiKrofT 07-03-2008 06:41 AM

I doubt it's just a matter of swapping in a GPS antenna. In addition there may be other hardware improvements that don't add additional features.

Ikkaku 07-03-2008 10:13 AM

Well, if I can take advantage of the cell towers and wifi gps by upgrading to 2.0 ... score!

So, does that mean currently with 1.1.4, the a-gps is only using wifi location and has nothing to do with cell tower locations?

UPDATE:

My friend that works for Rogers went in for a training program. Apparently, if you are eligible for a phone upgrade, you are ABLE to just pay the $299. You are NOT able to just buy the phone straight up. If you are on Fido, it is the same, and you can even use your Fido dollars for it!

He said, they will come brick'd, and you will need to connect to iTunes to unBrick it with a valid sim card. This apparently is to prevent people from buying the iPhone alone and using it as an iPod (so it will not kill the iTouch market).

they don't come "brick'd"

brick'd is more of a term that describes an iphone that has been jail brokened and then software upgraded and won't function, more like broken....

the iphone fido/rogers are going to get is rather not-activated...
what will happen is we will put the options and whatever stuff onto your current account.. so you're basically stuck with the plan and option the moment you leave the store, when you get home, you need to charge and put your sim card in and plug it into your PC or Mac... with iTunes of course, and that will activate your phone.. and not unbricking it...

and it's not because it would kill the Touch market.. rather it's to save customer and representatives time in the store.. so they can serve more customers... at the same time, this method guarantees every customer who leaves the store has the option or what not on a 3 yr contract onto their plan to deter people from selling the new iphones on the grey market..

1.1.4 = Wifi location + Cell tower

2.0 = Wifi location + Cell tower + GPS chip

problem is... google map loads maps OTA.. which means data usage.. so basically if your driving and want to use GPS.. i believe you will incur data usage otherwise it won't work...

or at least until TomTom and Garmin finishes their iphone software so we can download maps

I don't know, I am just stating what the information is that he showed me from his session.

Plus Apple already released so many units... regardless or not, there will be tons of iphones on the market now. It's just too attainable now...

i have good news later
that will allow alot of us to purchase this new phone

Drift_Monkey 07-04-2008 10:58 AM

7-11 ten char

way2quik 07-04-2008 11:30 AM

AT&T does not require contracts.
Customers are able to buy the iPhone straight out.
Not surprised if Rogers does the same couple months after, after raking in the first batch of customers with the additional data plan.

I called Fido and the CSR had no idea about the iPhone! After asking another CSR she told me that I was able to get the new phone in Oct. Don't know if i'm going to get one, I already have the current iPhone and the phone itself is getting boring.
