If you're going to take it back to Apple, I'd suggest making sure it's not jailbroken when you bring it in as the practice is generally frowned upon by the folks at Apple. You can do that by just restoring a factory firmware on the device (which it sounds like you've already done). If it's not detecting a SIM and you know the SIM is good, just have them repair or replace it if it's under warranty. I'm pretty sure the guys at the Apple store will try to send it in if it's not repairable by the guys at the Genius Bar or whatever they call their tech guys at the store. (at least that was the procedure with my Nano when it failed) When you go back to Apple, bring another GSM phone with you that you can interchange the SIM with to prove it's not your SIM card. That way, they can't blame your card. If they still don't believe you, then take one of their SIM cards and place it into your phone and test it. Don't let them give you the run around... |
hey ch28, another n00b question for you before i attempt to do the upgrade to 2.1; by using that method from that link you sent me, will the phone restore to it's current state right now? meaning, if i upgrade the thing, will i lose everything that's currently installed in the phone? or is there a way of restoring what i currently have? i have done a full backup of the phone one time via itunes which took about 12hrs. look forward to your answer & thanks in advance |

OK, I just got a brand new iPhone 3G 8GB from Fido today. No data plan. So is there a way to turn it on for the first time now and check my firmware without getting data charges? When I turned it on, it said to plug into iTunes. so the iphone requires activation during the 1st time of use. I would like this iPhone to work on Rogers. Would I have to unlock it? If so, before I unlock it, would it matter if I should do the first time activation or not? |
Any of you doing tethering on your iPhone 3G's? |

If you sync your phone prior to doing it then you'll still have all your calendar, contacts, notes and programs on there when you're done. All you have to do is re-sync the phone and it'll all get put back on. Your jailbroken apps (installer/cydia) will disappear but all you have to do is reinstall them. |
keep in mind pre 2.1 even if you did a 12 hr backup, if sync your phone after you did the backup and if you cancel any sequential backup when you try to restore you will most likely get a corrupted backup |

I'm surprised it took them that long to come out with one. Now you gotta figure out how to save em on your phone |

^ Read the last couple of pages. All of those questions have been answered damn it |
Loving PDAnet...hopefully Fido can't tell. Can a Fido or Roger rep confirm or deny that tethering is against the TOS? |
Your friend probably pick "activate phone" when he did the custom software. When you do that to a provider locked iPhone, it will give you that message. Only way to fix it is to do another custom firmware and NOT pick "activate phone". Try that and it should work again Quote:
