UBC Admission Question

I am going to grade 12 and i'm thinking of applying to UBC Commerce... just wondering -- because supposedly UBC doesnt look at Provincial Exams anymore (i am still doing them anyways justt in case)--do you guys think UBC will have like entry exams or an exam of some sort? cuz with no regards to standardized testing, does that mean any goof can get in or what?
thanks.

Hmm they just won't count provincials (or wait to the very end to accept you).

You still need good grades. They aren't going to accept some retard w/ a C- average if that is what you're asking.

Zerius 08-03-2008 10:38 PM

you'd need a shitload of extracirriculars, that and a high school average

you need a shitlaod of extracirriculars is true~!
i didn't get in and ended up in arts cuz i had good grades but did shit all outta skool besides party.

or....you can do wat one of my buddies did, the easy way,
go into arts and take commerce courses as electives and do good in 1st yr then transfer over
it delays your grad by 1/2 a yr:haha:

misteranswer 08-04-2008 03:21 AM

how can that delay your graduation by a year? They expect a good chunk of individuals to do 1st year in arts.

Lie on your supplemental. I know quite a few people from different years who've done that and have been accepted.

LOL ya that was my backup plan in case i dont get accepted. Thanks for the replies everyone.

I have alot of extra-curricular activities in my grade 11 year, would it be applicable??

Ulic Qel-Droma 08-04-2008 09:46 AM

since when did schools even give a shit about extra curricular activities for an undergraduate degree?

Since the Sauder school went to broad-based admissions in 2004. ;)

Pretty much what's been said is true. Sauder is a kick-ass place to go, but you better be prepared to work your ass off AND be able to party like it's 1999....all the way until your grad in 2012 (or so, depending on whether you do co-op, exchange, etc. hahaha).

nosleepboy87 08-04-2008 05:34 PM

sauder people study? wow.....thats amazing :P

more competitive/professional schools require extracurricular. i am a pharmacy student at UBC n from the application process, what i hear from people and acceptance/rejection, extra curricular could mean just as much as academic.

yeah commerce is intense to get into... my friends from high school with high 80s low 90s couldn't get in. of everyone i know, only one of my friends got in, and that was with a carefully crafted supplementary application.

jurson 08-06-2008 10:33 AM

all about ur supplementary app. and yes lots of partying. but also if you dont' get it right away you can always try transferring in after first year, I know a couple ppl that did that

Wanderer 08-06-2008 04:46 PM

there is also SFU business for those who dont want to wait for a year. rumors has it that SFU business is better than UBC commerce =X

Many do, it's hard, but doable.

And the n00bs weigh in. :p SFU Business is different, not necessarily better. For example, accounting is really strong at both schools, but for finance, you're way better off at UBC. MIS might be stronger at SFU though.

I actually got in 3 years ago and basically my advice to you is to make your supplement shine since they accept a lot of people as long as you are over 84 average but its the supplement form that seperates the ones that get in and the ones that gets rejected. I wasn't the hardest worker in highschool and just managed an A average but I made my supplement fly. The 10 extracirricular activities, you better at least get 8 or 9. As for the paragraphs, don't just spend 10 minutes writting it, it took me 3 days to make sure mine was good and try to make your story unique. Basically what I'm trying to say it, fill the form out as much as possible and make sure its good enough to make them notice you.

this is off topic. but nice choice on commerce. I heard commerce and Art is where all the hot asian girls are going into

tiger_handheld 08-17-2008 08:03 PM

dude .. have you seen the movie 21 ...... tell the UBC people something that will stand out , and baffle their admin , n u'll get in .....

LOL...hahah arts or commerce is where i really wanna go into... and that is one of the reasons why :haha:

Ready2Rumble 08-17-2008 11:10 PM

Probably off topic... but did anyone transfer from Applied Science to Arts in UBC? (weird question...i know) I am going to Applied Science in Sept, but is it possible to transfer to Arts/Commerce going into the 2nd year?

I am asking this because I really really regret not choosing Arts as second choice as Commerce rejected me...Now, it is too late to switch to Arts since school is going to very soon : (

nosleepboy87 08-18-2008 01:09 AM

use ur electives to take a some art courses u think u are interseted in and then see if you really wanna transfer in the end. the answer is yes you can transfer but it may delay your graduation....my buddy did that in 3rd yr...he went from applied science to arts....and well.....he is in 7th year now

marty123 08-22-2008 12:32 AM

If you're talking about fobby honger chicks then yes theres tons. If you're talking about white washed or white chicks in general, there are some in commerce but not tons, arts and forestry is where you'll find those.

be as BIG OF A SUCK UP AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN. Also, mention how you can lead and can make quick, educated decisions. But mostly the suck up part.
