i second AVG free, although of course you yourself have to watch out for what site you go to, what you download. i personally believe no antivirus can save u from computer misuse.

get some spyware/adware protection while u are at it.

spyware blaster, spybot search and destroy, adaware are all good in my books =]

but i use a macbook now =p

If you use the link watcher thingy with AVG Free it's very helpful when searching with Google and the like and following lots of links you don't know, I highly recommend it.

+1 for AdAware as well.

Wanderer, I regret to inform you that simply because you have a Mac does not make you safe

AVG Link scanner is supposedly to decrease performance speed on Firefox.
Anyways, with all that spyware stuff on AVG, i moved to antivir, tho it lacks an email scanner. But I can' be bothered with another spyware add-on when I have windows defender, and spybot for manual check.

Kaspersky and NOD32 own the shit out of AVG Free and you can usually get them for about $10-$15/year if you catch them on sale.

^ what is it that makes them better? I always felt like buying an antivirus to get all the features of something but AVG is expensive IIRC

If you are with Shaw use their FREE one. (FREE, yes but only if you are with Shaw other wise it is EUR 75 or 65)

It is by "F SECURE" and is very popular in Europe.

A few of my friends use it (IT Geeks) and I have been using it for about a year. It takes a bit to set it up (allowing programs, changes to setting etc) but it work great.

Kaspersky is supposed to be one of the best detection engines out there. Both NOD32 and Kaspersky AV (obviously) use the same Kaspersky engine.

haha thanks i am totally aware that there are virus that can make my mac go down too but in comparison, significantly less security is needed for a mac imo. this is probably due to the fact that there are way more pc users so virus writers tend to target those more... maybe there will be a reversal later on when mac users grow even more =)

Better/more active protection, more regular product updates, better protection against new/unknown viruses, better at disinfecting and/or removing infections, more protection agents (firewall, anti-spam, anti-phishing, etc.), free technical support, lower memory footprint, better PC performance (NOD32), considerably better protection against complex viruses (i.e. polymorphic viruses), etc.

NOD32's and Kaspersky's engines are practically polar-opposites ... NOD32 relies heavily on heuristics and very little on signatures while Kaspersky relies heavily on signatures and very little on heuristics. Both do an excellent job, though. Overall, Kaspersky is a little better in terms of overall protection (NOD32 is better against new/unknown viruses, but considering Kaspersky has a <2 hour outbreak response time, it's not likely you'll ever run into a situation where you're vulnerable to new outbreaks w/ Kaspersky), but NOD32 offers better performance.

^ Haven't used it in a while but apparently it has gotten better? But I've been using Kaspersky for a while and I always get it on sale. Bestbuy and Futureshop has The Internet security which cost 19.99 and the Anti Virus for 14.99. Regular prices are usually 50-70 bucks.

old thread, new player in the game.
http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

it's free, lightweight, non-intrusive, and according to all the reviews I've read, it's an excellent at detecting viruses.

I've switched all my home computers from AVG Free to this.

I agree, this one is awesome. Someone posted a link to a test someone did, and it was one of the best for catching viruses, and not inundating you with false positives all the time. Best of all, it's very light weight, free, and free of adware.

I use microsofts essentials as well, but I also use webroot's spy sweeper and anti virus, it finds quite a bit of threats, found a trojan that microsoft essentials didn't detect.
